CATALOGUE OF CLAUDIAN COINS IN BRITAIN

Introduction

The catalogue of Claud ian coin-finds was closed at the end of 1990 with details of a metal-detector find of an .~re~s at Hoe, near Swanton Morley, Norfolk provided by David Gurney, Norfolk Archaeological Unit. In retrospect, it seems appropriate to close the catalogue with an entry that reflects its starting point. At the end of 1984, the late Tony Gregory of Norfolk Archaeological Unit provided me with details of Claudian aes found in Norfolk: these were taken from his unpublished gazetteer of finds at Romano-British sites in Norfolk. This positive and gener-ous gesture of. interest in my studies was to be repeated by other curators and individuals throughout Britain, and later was to be matched by Jenny Hall, Museum of London. I am indebted to Tony Gregory, Jenny Hall and all who responded so helpfully to my postal survey and in person to my visits to record their coins.

Three main ways of gathering data were employed to compile this catalogue: 1 physical inspection of coins in museum

collections, coins held by archaeological bodies and

individuals' collections; 2 a postal survey of the Council

of British Archaeology regional groups, museums in England and Wales, and Archaeological Trusts and Units in England and Wales; and 3 a search through British archaeological

It will be clear from even a brief glance throuqh the following pages that this catalogue has benefit· ed consi-derably from contributions by many people. Followinq this

introduction are lists of archaeological groups, museums and individuals that provided details of coin-finds; a list of archaeological journals consulted is also given.

The catalogue, following the above lists, is arranged in five sections: England (p.557), Wales (p.770), Scotland (p.784), Channel Islands (p.785), and collections of the major British museums (Fitzwilliam, Cambridge; Ashmolean, Oxford; British, London; Hunter Coin Cabinet, Glasgow; and National Museum of Wales, Cardiff) (p.786). It is set out alphabetically in counties and metropolitan areas: each page is headed with the county name; the heading of the first paqe of each county is underlined. Each entry gives the source of the data. Abbreviations of source references have been avoided where possible; any abbreviations used in quoted references may be found by consulting the original source.

(Spes), 4 dupondij (2 Ceres, 1 Antonia, 1 hybrid), 85 asses (76 Minerva, 4 Libertas, 3 Constantia, 2 hybrids) together with Augustan (3) and Agrippan (7) aes and 2 Republican and 2 M.Antony denarii. Judging by their

identical and distinctive patination the author suggests that 1] of the C1audian and Agrippan aes may have been a hoard, or part of one. 'minims', 1/8 to 3/8 inch in diameter. Nicholls saw some 200 First Brass and 800 minims . . . . The combination of such early and late coins is rare and leads one to think that perhaps the earlier coins belonged to an earlier hoard discovered later and then reburied with the later coins

OAKLEY GREEN, near Windsor: 'A 'Brass' of Claudius was found by a soldier in 1952. It was in the Windsor Guildhall Museum, which is now closed.' Mrs J Hunter provided me with a photograph of the obverse of this coin which showed the coin to be a Claudian sestertius

Bletchley Metal Detectors Club working 1979-81 also found 4 denarii (1 Republican, 1 of Julius, 1 Tiberian, 1 plated Claudian), 1 Republican as with undescribed punchmarks on the obverse, 1 Gaian sestertius (RIC (1927) 26), 3 Claudian aes (1

dupondius (Antonia), 2 asses (Minerva». It is noteworthy that the Republican as, denarius and the Julius Caesar denarius were found close together.

denarius of Tlberius, are the only ones detlnit~ly known to be from this hoard ... five others d~not~d 'strutt's Park Find' are attributed, some doubtfully, to the reigns of caligula, Nero, Vitellius, Vespasian and Titus, are probably from this hoard. A sestertias of the reign of Hadrian, also recorded as from Strutt's Park, may be from this source ... All these coins are described as being worn (VCH, 1905), and it is likely that they were not deposited during the first century. As datinq evidence

for an early fort, they must be discounted.'

This hoard may have included Claudian coin(s) and is mentioned for that reason, but it is not included in the distribution maps.

11.1.90) a rubbing of the coin and a copy of the details

which accompany the coin. The sesterti~s is in very poor

condition and is of the Spes type.

The above mentioned coins, from Maumbury and Colliton Park, were not available at the museum for inspection. The 3 Claudian asses shown to me there were: 1 from

Shapwick and 2 unprovenanced asses of the Smith Bucknole collection, which judging by their excellent condition and uncommon type are collector's coins and are not likely to be local finds (they are not included in the distribution maps) .
