Materialism
and
themerelyintellectualviewhave
carried
man
outupon
a seaof unrestand
dissatisfac-tion, while the real
man,
the DivineMan,
has beenignored.
As
aresult,thefinerknowledge
which
isthevery beingof
man
himself is inactiveand
ob-scured, so that it is difficult even for thinking
men
and
women
to find theirmoorings. Itisthisverycon-dition,however,that will finally
open man's
eyes to thepower and
beneficenceofTheosophy, and
tothefactthatitholds thekeyto
knowledge

is the inner life in every religion. It isno
new
religion, but is as old asTruth

mission of theTheosophical Societyis to setaside errors,misconceptions, unbrotherliness

in-tolerance,

put loveand
trust, right actionand
the sweetnessoftruth, in their place. Itsmissionisto spread

ideas throughout the world for thebenefitof those
who
most
need them; to release themind
ofman
from
prejudiceand from
fear,and
human
life from its digressions. Its mission is tobring the whole
human
familyup
to a standard ofspiritual foresight, discrimination, intuition, right
thought
and
right action, with anew

divinerconception of Justice

women

mighty
must
reachdownward
towards the lowly; the lowlymust
be borne upwards.My

is to bringout thespiritualpossi-bilities of the individual. . . . Individual effort

bea spiritual 'rounding-out' of the character
and
thelife. If
we
can see the individual rising in thestrength of his divine heritage, the
power
of hisspiritual rights, then

a clearing ofthe mind,a lifting of the veil that hides the Truth.
As
Madame
Blavatsky said, "Theosophist iswho
Theosophy
does";and Theosophy
teaches,first
and
last, purity oflife, protection of theinno-cent,purethoughts,pure words,puredeeds.
Above
all, it teaches that each has a responsibility for all
who
areweaker
or less progressed; it teaches thateach is "his brother's keeper."
Yet
we
never proselytize.We
make
no
at-tempt
to 'convert'; for our philosophy declares thatany
attempt to force others to accept our thought or our views is an injustice to their truenature, their deeper self.
We
do
not frighten,in-timidate, or discourage, nor
do
we
implant fear.But
we
do
appeal,we
do
plead,and
we
do
tryby
the
example
of our lives toshow
to others thebeauty of
Theosophy

A
new
hope, anew
courage,is evennow
stirringthe hearts of thousands.
A
message
ofLove and
Brotherhood has gone out tothe world. Thisis the
keynote of the
new
age Brotherhood.The
principlesofTheosophy
areworthless unlesscarried outin deeds. Itis useless topile
up
in thelibrary of our intellectual life ideas
upon
ideasand
nothing more.The
worldisweigheddown
withmere
intellectualism already. Itmust have
some-thingmore,
and
that'somethingmore'
is theactive,practical expression of those ideas, those spiritual
principles, inevery actoflife.
Partof the mission of
Theosophy
is toshow
man
how
toreasonin anew
way. Its teachings challengeone toseek a
new
viewpoint; theychallenge one torise in the strength of the soul to heights of
self-mastery never attained before.
But
not for self:in this time of
agony and
chaos there can beno
thought ofself.*
Insuch endeavorthestudentfindsthe sacredness
of the hour
and
theday.There
isno
time forcom-promiseorfor delay.
The
lazy, the indifferent, theselfish
and
theegotistical willnot beinterested along suchlinesof research; but onewho
isstirredby
thesimple conviction thatheisimmortal notin
some
nebulous future life, but here
and now
thatman
feels thetouchof the Divinity within.
Theosophy
is above all thepower
to uplift. Ifmankind
but understoodand
livedit, thewholehu-man
racewould
befreed,asolidfoundationofmentaland
spiritualfreedomwould
beestablished,and
pres-entmenacing and
terrible conditionswould
disap-pear. So great
would
bethejoyoflifeunderTheo-sophy, applied
and
lived, that thosepartakingofitsbeneficence could efface from their
memories
eventhe mistakes of the past,
and
could go forwardfearlessly
and
filledwithhope.Theosophy
declares thathumanity
is divine!Were
this Divinity but realized, the godlikeattri-butes of character
would
be so manifest in dignityand
instrength thatno words would
beneededtotellyou what
real life is!...
We
aremaking some
progress,it istrue; but
we
hearonlysixnotes played.The
seventh one is silent,and
that silent, waitingnote is the Divine in
human
natureand

woman,
Helena
Petrovna Bla-vatsky! I feel that shemust have
passed throughmany
schools of experience inmany,
many
livesto gain the marvelous
knowledge
that shepos-sessed, the affectionate self-sacrificing love for
hu-manity

the couragethat sufficedto carry her through the suffering

Blavatskycame
to the world with her message ofTheosophy,
she perceived thematerialistic trend of
human
thoughtand
life,and
brought her treasures ofTruth
that she might turnit to higherthings.
She
came
to simplify theprob-lems oflife.
Her
purposewas
to setmen
thinking.Read

who
are questioning as to the
'whence/
the 'wherefore'and
the 'whither'and

not find inthem
principlesand

Theosophy
has not been fully uttered,and
we
canperceive as yet but one or

these according to our
advancement.
In her lifeshe expressed the unutterable, the mystical, the truly
unexpressed.
She
dwelt in the soul-lifeand under
theimpressof thesilence. She brought totheworld
lofty
and
colossal principles,whose meaning
ourchildren as the yearspasswill interpret better than
we. Shelifted the veil before the mysteries oflife
and
destinywhen
she stepped forthon
the outerplane withthismagnificent
and
dignifiedphilosophy.Isaluteher,whereversheis!

P. Blavatsky has been libeledand
obscured,as all spiritual reformers
have
been; but thousandswho know
herteachingsand
herlifehailherasoneofthe benefactors of the age.
We
already find theidealsof
Theosophy
permeating everydepartment
ofthought,
and
Iprophesythatitwillnot beahundred
years before
Theosophy
will be plantedinevery cityof thecivilizedworld because shelived
and
sacri-ficed
and
taught.Oh,
the superb things that thenwill
come
tohuman
life!The
verythoughtofit isabenediction. She is indeed the spiritual
mother
of the world.
Humanity
is truly in the shadows; but in spiteofretrogression, materialism
and
a selfishness thatis extreme, the finer atmosphere of the world is even
now
surcharged with hope.Can we
take thelight
and
sunshine of thishope
into our livesand
forget the one to
whose
courageand
sublime effortwe owe
all thisH.
P. Blavatsky?No
Theo-sophistcould
do
so.She
had
traveled faron the 'small oldpath' ofself-mastery a great Spiritual Warrior, with the love of a
mother
burning in her heartand
the sweetnessand
trustof achild. She standsasonetransfigured,for
upon
her shines thesunrise lightof theNew
Day
she proclaimed.
She left the world in its thought-life teeming
with an urge for higher things,
which
only the few could understand.She
was
inspiredbeyond
theknowing,
and
the great message whichshe brought, themighty
undertonesand
overtones ofUniversalLove,
sounded by
her in the silences, were part ofthe great Universal Plan. She
was
the Messengerof years to come, the Torch-bearer of the age, the
great transmitter of spiritual light to the future.

the lower, the angeland

Theosophy
teaches the duality ofman's
naturethe higher,
immortal
part,and
the lower,made up
of passions
and
desires.When
the higherdominates,there is
knowledge and
there is peace.When
thelower rules, all the dark despairing elements of
hu-man
life rush inupon
theunguarded
soul,and
toooften suicideis theresult.
Ibring themessagethat
man,
in hisinner nature,is a being with a divine inheritance
and
immeasur-able possibilities of evolution.
Thisstrange duality!
And
how
do
human
weak-nesses creepin? Firstofall
we
turn thekey
ofselfish-nessin
some
closeddoorof the nature; then, beforewe know
it,thedoorisopen and
inwalksa stranger,an obsessive, potent forceofevil, often with
power
enough
todestroy theverybeing.No
lenshasasyetbeen
made
that canshow you what
this is, but itnevertheless exists.
And
the door ofselfish desireonceajar, theincomingstrangeriswelcomed,
enter-tained, permitted to enjoy the
bounty
of the intel-lectual life,permitted tosit in the verychamber
of man's being,where
onlyhigherand
splendid things should be.This door
may
open toany
ofus, butknow
that it can never be shut,and
kept shut, until our feetareplanted
on
the eternalrockofknowledge and
oftrust, until
we
have
thepower
and
absolutelyknow
thatwe
have
it to shut out the faintest tinge or touch or thought or vibration of anything thatwould
mar
the purity of that inner realm ofmind
that the soulworks
inand
through.In the
name
of justiceand
ofKarma
I say,Woe
be unto thosewho
wilfully entertain such visitorsasthese!
Woe
beuntothosewho
daretodesecrate theirown
mind
ortouchthemind
ofanother withanythingbut the loftiest, the noblest^ the purest
and
the best!Once
the duality ofhuman
natureisadmittedby
science, our asylums will
become
great schools ofstudy from which a deeper understanding
and
alargercompassion shall come. For without a study

be understood.
A
volume
could be writtenon
thisoneline alone,
and
the halfnot then be told.How
wonderfullyfar-seeingwas
that old teacher ofbygone
days,who
left us this injunction:MAN,
KNOW
THYSELF!That
is thekey
to the wholesituation. Let
man
take the first step boldly inhonestself-examination,withadaringthat stops
be-fore nothing that
may
impede
hispath,and
hewill find very soonthathe hasthekey
towisdom
and
tothe
power which
redeems. Discovered through hisown
efforts,by
the law of self-directed evolution,this
key
willopen
beforehim
theChambers
ofthe Self.
For
when
aman
has thecourage toanalysehim-self hispurposes,hismotives,hisverylife
when
hedares to
compare
thewrong
thingsin hislifewiththerightones, in the spirit of a love for
humanity
sufficient tomake
him
willing tolaydown
hislifefor itifneedbe,hewill findthe secret ofliving. Thisiswhat
Imean when
I say thatwe
are ever beingchallenged challenged
by
the better side of ournaturestostandfacetofacewithourselves.
That
isPATH
OF
the challenge of
Theosophy, which
everpleads withman
to reach out in recognition to the Divinitywithin.
For
thisDivinity,thisKnower,
thisSpiritu-al
Companion,
iseverpleadingtobelistenedto,everwaiting to be recognised, ever ready to help
and
serve that it
may
bring the whole nature ofman
toits standardof godlike perfection.
These two
forces: the physicaldominated by
thespiritual, the
mind
illuminatedby
treasuresof truthand
inspirationfrom
theHigher
Self, these two,working together, will bring about results that are
unbelievable.
Nor
will it take all eternity to bringabout these things.
The
veryatoms
of ourbody
can be touchedby
thefireof divinelifeand
broughtinto
harmony
with themind
and
soul,controlled asthe master musician controls his instrument,
by
the
Higher
Self.For
life isLightand
Lightis life,and
theChristos-spirit is in everything in degree.
Could
we
sit atthefeetof the
Law
likelittlechildren, couldwe
freeour
minds
from misconceptionsand
learn from na-tureand
listen to the Christos-voice within, oh,what
revelationswould
come
tous!We
should thenbe able to say, This is immortal
and
thatis mortal;MAN

this belongs to theanimal
nature ofman,
and
thattothe spiritual.
The
power
todo
thisisthepower
thatwe
need, arousingusfrom
thedead,so to speak,and
bringing to us light
and
illumination.Man's
Two
Companions
From
the time that avow
is taken the disciplehas ever with
him two
forces:two
invisible com-panionsformed
of hisown
essence, one evil, onedivine; the secretion or objectivationofthe opposite
poles ofhis
own
self-consciousness,theyrepresenthisgood and
evil angels,theAugoeidesand
itscounter-part,eachseeking toabsorbhisbeing.
One
of thesein the
end must
prevail over the other,and
one orthe other is strengthened
by
every actand
thoughtof his life.
They
are his higherand
lowerpoten-tialitiespassing slowly into potency, as the energies
(both
good and
evil, note) . . . areawakened.

Yet
never canwe
reach that point of spiritualdiscernment until
we
have
found within ourown
hearts something
new:
a largersympathy

good and
all the evil elements towhich

have
given consciouslifeinthepast.

eachmoment,
aswe
consciouslyinclinetoward good

small a point, it must, if encouraged, lead to

evolveddifferently, in differentenvironments,

and up
todifferentpointsofunderstand-ing,one cannot say
when
orhow.To
establish aset rule forreformationwould
thereforebe unwise. Thiswe
do know,
however, that with themotive
pureand
the soul ever urging oneupward,

forward naturally

linesofsimpleduty,and
thus into the light of the higher natureand

are too slowin lookingat these graveprob-lemsin
human
naturefrom
the practical standpoint,too dilatoryin oureffortstostudy
them
from
analo-gy.
Yet
thisisjustwhat
we must
do
ifwe
are togoforward
on
thepath ofself-conquestand
realhelpful-ness to others.
We
may
talkaboutduality allday;but
what
doesit availifwe
do
not apply ourknow-ledge to the conditions of actual life?
It is in the mysterious
Chambers
of the Self,within the very
atoms
of the mind, that the littleweakness, the little untruthfulness or disobedience, theallbut unnoticedvice,take root
and
grow,mark-ing the subtlebeginningsofanevilthatisworse than
a crawling,
venomous
reptilereadytospringatyourthroat. This is a vivid picture, but
we
need itto see things as they are.
To
reconstructmankind
we
must
arousemore
faith inthe Self.
The
spiritual failurebecomes
such because he has lost faith in himself.That
isalwaysthe initial step.
Then
comes
loss of faith in hisfriends, then in
mankind
as a whole,and
soon hefinds himself living in a strange house: the house
of the lower nature.
Itis an awful spectacle, the decayof a loyal
na-ture.
So
littleabar seemstokeepthe poor,unhappy
mind
flutteringthroughitsdelusions fromfind-ingits

place of peace.But

studythem and

one, thoroughly set in awrong
course, can everbe broughtto arealizationof thatfactby words
alone.Why?
Because the lower nature is there; it is, forthe time,masterof thesituation, master inthe house ofmind, inimical naturally to
whatever
would
enable its victim to learn the truth.We
allknow
that the innerman
is true, eternal,strong, pure,compassionate,just.
The
outeris toooftenweak, wavering,selfish; itsenergyarisesoutof
desire

the soul, the inner, seeks to perfect in compassion. It is in this outer nature, usually physically
domi-nated, thatarisesthe
common
feelingof'I',and

Our
consciousnessisoften a strangelyself-gullible,dualentity. Victories are
won
firstin thought;and
the habit of substituting a
good
thought or picturethatarouses compassionor
any
partof the spiritualnature, or agranderideain

thelimited selfhood, for a selfish or personal or sensual

thismoot
question, so often raisedby modern
psychology thequestionof habit: it ishabit that
makes
ormars
the character; but hewho
knows
thedividing-line between self-indulgenceand
self-control, has the
key
tohabitand knows
how
tobuild aright.
Ifindmyselfthinking the
same
thing todaythatIdid yesterday,holdingthe
same
idealbut with eachday
living closer to it, nearer to thewarmth
and
glow of the real life.
Soon
habit is established,the habit of aspiration
and
self-control, thefounda-tion of character.
Were
thisknowledgeuniversal, therewould
opennew
pathsinlife.We
shouldhave
no
disharmonies,no
war
... we
shouldhave
religion itself religionthat
would
leadus to see thebeauties ofnaturein anew
way,
to studyhumanity
in anew
way, and
tofind the virtues ofour brothers

cultivatethem
so understandingly

so generously that in timeall hatred

nature is the greatTheo-sophical revelationin the realmofpsychology. . . .

Knox's old conception of thedevil,
and were
I to intensifyitsfiendishnatureand
sendit out into theworld as a livingpersonality, itwould
be harmless in comparison with the force of the lower psychologywhich
today is seeking todestroy the
power
of thehuman
mind.Thisisoneof the closeddoorsin
human
life;and
I
am
trying toopen
it for the benefit ofmankind.
We
declare that thereisno
hellexceptthatwhich
abidesin
man,
orwhich
hemakes
forhimselfby
hisown
thoughtand
deeds;no
heaven except that whichman
makes
for himself.The
more
exalted thedominant
motive of thelife, the greater is the soul-expression, the
more
dominant
the soul-psychology.The
lower the life-motive,the strongerbecomes
thelowerselfand
with itthelower psychology, whichsofarasitmanifestsinhuman
lifetoday,isthedamnation
ofhumanity. . . .Nor
is thispeculiartoour ageor to ourrace, forthese dualconflicting forces are as old as
humanity
itself.
How
do
they manifest?Very
simplyand
inmany
unsuspected ways.For
example,have
we
notin our experience
met
with real sermons in poetry,music or art, that lifted us spiritually, above the
senses to a higher plane?
And
on
the other hand,have
we
not contactedotherand
evil forces,which
playedinupon
our minds,silently, but neverthelessshutting
away
thesoul-light?And
thuswe
find theplay
and
interplay of thehigherand
lower psychologyon
allsides, foras the ancient scripturehasit theBhagavad-Gtta,loved
by
allstudents ofTheosophy
"these two, light
and
darkness, are the world'seternal ways."
And
thenthisquestion of obsession: there aresomany
theories,somany
so-calledexplanations.But
our scientists have
much
to learn about it becauseTHE HIGHER
AND
LOWER
PSYCHOLOGY
thereexist inthenatureinvisible
and
intricateforceswhich have theirconnexion with the physical brain,
and
yet can neither bemeasured
nor seen.They
exist nevertheless, subtle
and
powerful forces, thatunder the pressure ofselfishdesire willdesecrate the
loftiest ideals, destroy the highest motives, nullify
the best of intentions.
They
beat inupon
thephysical brain with play
and
interplay,and
use itto destructive ends.
There
is something very wonderful about thisbrain-mind of ours; there iseven something sacred
aboutit because,thoughitdoes belongtothe physi-cal
make-up
ofman,
therestill shineupon
itasupon
a flower the rays of the Spiritual Sun.
But
when
some
selfishdesireshuts thatlightaway,thereseemsno
limit toitscapacity tobe usedon
lower,destruc-tive lines.
Have we
not seen this exemplified inthe recent great world-war?
On
the otherhand,thereisno
limittothe servicethe brain-mind can render
on
the highest spirituallines,
when
disciplinedand
balancedby
righteduca-tion, with the high
and immutable
principles of atruephilosophyoflifereflected
upon
itswalls.These
things are therealmysteries,
and
theyarenotstudiedas they should be, even
by
students ofTheosophy.

to look within.Even
totheman
who
haslostfaith inhumanity and
in himself,even tothe pessimistwho
daresnotthink aweek
ahead inhope
to such as these I say,Look
into thechambers
ofyour soul, for trulyyou
are a soul. Rediscover the energy
and
strength ofyour
manhood.
Take
timetothink, notin theordi-nary
way,
butdeeply,and
the laws that govern lifewill be revealed.

cannot touch the laws connected with thismighty
power,the soul-psychology,withoutgenerat-ing wonderful forces forces that the
human
eye cannot see, that themind
cannot comprehend,can-not explain . . . but
which
bringus into touch withNature and
with the lawswhich
govern the lowerkingdoms
of life.Truly I believe that birds
and
flowersknow
usbetterthan
we know
ourselves;and
when
we
areon
the high plane of mystical knowledge,
when
ourhearts aretouched withthespiritual forcesof
Nature
and
oflife,we
learn to talkwith Nature,we
learn towork
with her.I never
went
into thewoods
but the birds sangbetter while I

these voices are even apart of ourselves.

thus in everydepartment
of lifewe
can demonstratethepsychology of thesoul.The
psychology of the Christos-spirit everac-companies true
manhood

It is the masculineand
the feminine blended into thehigher unity. Christ

attained that unity amystic
and
interior state ashad
other greatTeachers before him. . . .

onlyway

Truth
is to seize holdon
himself, assertand

Making
hismind
and
memory
registerbeyond
allfuturecavilor
doubt what
he thenknows
tobe true,THE

conduct all the elements ofhis nature his body,
mind,
and
emotions he will maintain from thatmoment
strengthand
joy in life.That
once done,couldhe but stand in that attitude for a few

Let there beno
delay.There
isno
need of preparation in the brain-mind sense.

need not
memorize
catechisms;you
have not tospendyearsinstudying yourBiblesinordertolearn
the great truths oflife

heartwillreveal these to you.
Once you have
found thisknowledge and have
commenced
toapplyit toyourconduct,
you
can turn to theBook
of theAges and
