The First Lesson
1 Kings 18:20‐39Lector A Reading from First Kings. Ahab sent to all the Israelites, and assembled the prophets at Mount Carmel. Elijah then came near to all the people, and said, ʺHow long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.ʺ The people did not answer him a word. Then Elijah said to the people, ʺI, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baalʹs prophets number four hundred fifty. Let two bulls be given to us; let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it; I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. Then you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the LORD; the god who answers by fire is indeed God.ʺ All the people answered, ʺWell spoken!ʺ Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, ʺChoose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many; then call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it.ʺ So they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, crying, ʺO Baal, answer us!ʺ But there was no voice, and no answer. They limped about the altar that they had made. At noon Elijah mocked them, saying, ʺCry aloud! Surely he is a god; either he is medi‐ tating, or he has wandered away, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.ʺ Then they cried aloud and, as was their custom, they cut themselves with swords and lances until the blood gushed out over them. As midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice, no an‐ swer, and no response. Then Elijah said to all the people, ʺCome closer to meʺ; and all the people came closer to him. First he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down; Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, ʺIsrael shall be your nameʺ; with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD. Celebrant: The Rev. Paula Vukmanic Deacon: Sarah Hubinsky Phelps A † appears in the margin where you may wish to make the sign of the cross over your body. Making the sign of the cross is a choice left to each worshipper. It is simply a way to engage your entire body (not just your speech and mind) in worship, and physically to signify embracing the blessing of God.
Then he made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed. Next he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, ʺFill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.ʺ Then he said, ʺDo it a second timeʺ; and they did it a second time. Again he said, ʺDo it a third timeʺ; and they did it a third time, so that the water ran all around the altar, and filled the trench also with water. At the time of the offering of the oblation, the prophet Elijah came near and said, ʺO LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your bidding. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.ʺ Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and even licked up the water that was in the trench. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, ʺThe LORD indeed is God; the LORD indeed is God.ʺ Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Second Lesson
Galatians 1:1‐12Reader A Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians. Paul an apostle‐‐ sent neither by human commission nor from human authorities, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead‐‐ and all the members of Godʹs family who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to set us free from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel‐‐ not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we pro‐ claimed to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a gos‐ pel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed!
Am I now seeking human approval, or Godʹs approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing peo‐ ple, I would not be a servant of Christ.
For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. Reader The Word of the Lord.

The Holy Gospel
Luke 7:1‐10Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, say‐ ing, ʺHe is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.ʺ And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centuri‐ on sent friends to say to him, ʺLord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man set under authori‐ ty, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, `Go,ʹ and he goes, and to another, `Come,ʹ and he comes, and to my slave, `Do this,ʹ and the slave does it.ʺ When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, ʺI tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.ʺ When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. The Nicene Creed
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
The People join in reading the words in bold. Let us pray for the Church and for the world. I’ll Praise My Maker While I’ve Breath
Pfautsch I’ll praise my maker while I’ve breath, and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne’er be past, while life, and thought, and being last, or immortality endures. Happy the man whose hopes rely on Israel’s God, he made the sky, and earth and seas, with all their train. His truth forever stands secure, he saves the oppressed, he feeds the poor, and none shall find his promise vain. Iona Community All stand or kneel as the Celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the call‐ ing of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Re‐ deemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, ʺTake, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remem‐ brance of me.ʺ After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, ʺDrink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenev‐ er you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.ʺ Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things under the influence of your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with St Francis and all your saints, we may enter the everlast‐ ing heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Communion Music
You Satisfy the Hungry Heart Robert E Kreutz As when the shepherd calls his sheep, they know and heed his voice; so when you call your family, Lord, they follow and rejoice. With joyful lips we sing to you our praise and gratitude that you should count us worthy, Lord, to share this heavenly food. Is not the cup we bless and share the blood of Christ outpoured? Do not one cup, one loaf, declare our oneness in the Lord? The mystery of your presence, Lord, no mortal tongue can tell; whom all the world cannot contain comes in our hearts to dwell. You give yourself to us, O Lord; then selfless let us be, to serve each other in your name in love and charity.
