Continue to worship with Highland Presbyterian Church

If you didn’t know, we’ve been broadcasting our Sunday Worship services! You can find the recorded videos on our website (www.hpclouisville.org) or on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/highlandpres/). We invite you to worship with us virtually every Sunday at 11:00am as we continue to socially distance ourselves.

Fellowship Groups

Many Fellowship small groups have been virtually gathering for time together. If you would like information on any of the groups meeting electronically, please email Megan at [email protected].

In 2014, as part of my sabbatical, I spent several days in London and Edinburgh. My plan was to participate in worship in some of the most famous churches in the world. On the first Sunday, I attended two morning services as the magnificent St. Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of London. The following Sunday, I went to St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, which was founded in 1124. This is the “High Kirk” for Scottish Presbyterians, and where John Knox preached from 1560 until his death twelve years later. The Sunday I visited St. Giles happened to coincide with the opening worship service of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Back in London, I attended evening vespers services at both Westminster Abbey and at St. Martin’s in the Fields, across the street from Trafalgar Square. It was a wonderful, inspirational week for me. I am so glad I made that journey.

As I planned the trip, the church I was most interested in was St. Martin’s. It comes from all those years of listening to classical music in the background and hearing the words pronounced in a crisp British accent, “performed by the Academy of St. Martin’s in the Field, under the direction of Sir Neville Mariner.” It took a few years for me to figure out that St. Martin’s was a church, and when I visited it, I also discovered that it is the local parish for the Queen when she is in residence at Buckingham Palace. The royal box is near the front of the sanctuary, on the right hand side. The other thing I discovered is that there is no way they could fit an orchestra in that sanctuary. Nevertheless, the music that evening was wonderful, lifting one’s soul. So good, I stayed for the second service. Imagine that, two evening services on a Sunday.

Last month, Sam Wells, the Vicar at St. Martins, wrote about the challenges the church faces in the era of Covid. Writing in his regular column in The Christian Century magazine, Wells indicated that St. Martin’s saw a drop of two

-thirds of its income since the beginning of the pandemic in March. Much of it because the BBC has stopped their weekly broadcast of Sunday services, and other musical programs that were broadcast from the church. Now I remember being astonished when I read about the annual budget of the church in a visitor’s pamphlet. It was in the range of $28 million dollars a year.

But then Wells went on to write, “But don’t tell anyone, but beautiful things are happening –too many to record.” He then counted some of the things St. Martin’s had been engaged in during the previous eight months. Church musicians were offering recorded music each week for congregations throughout Great Britain; the education seminars the church presented had become quite a source of innovation; and the inquirers’ class had drawn many new members from far and wide who would be “virtual” members of St. Martin’s-in-the-Field.

I am thankful for the many ways members of Highland Presbyterian Church have continued the education, social and mission activities of the congregation through this difficult time of coronavirus. May God continue to guide and encourage us until we can once again join in prayer and song in worship.

Session Summary

A report from the October 2020 Session Meeting.

Christian Education: The Session approved language added to the Youth Group Guidelines

that details the steps that need to be taken if someone tests positive for Covid.

Finance: The Session gave approval for HPC to apply for a second

-

round PPP (Payroll

Protection Program) loan, if enacted by Congress and HPC meets the qualifications.

Approval was also given to pay off the capital campaign line of credit. There is currently enough

money in the campaign to do so, and the campaign is largely finished.

New Business: The Session appointed an ad hoc committee (Ben Anderson, Bill McConnell, Alex

Novak, Cynthia Welch) to look at the size of the Session, with the possibility of reducing it.

Race Equity—Antiracism Task Force

HPC was a sponsor of the EmpowerWest presentation by Robert P. Jones, author of White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity on October 14. PC(USA) Stated Clerk J. Herbert Nelson and others

participated in a panel discussion with Jones, a 2019 Grawmeyer Award winner. If you missed the event you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q2_tqUSQHs

We are planning an HPC discussion of this compelling and timely book, so watch for future announcements. Other activities underway by the task force include further study and examination of HPC and race, relationship building with Black congregations and ways we can act towards eliminating racial inequities in criminal justice and other subjects as we strive to respond to the call by Louisville Black leaders in A Path Forward for Louisville for white congregations to “move from being non-racist to aggressively becoming antiracist.”

All Saints

–Our all Saints Worship Service is one of our special worship services at Highland where we remember our members and friends who have passed away in the previous year. We will not be in person to celebrate this day together, but we will have a special offering online. November 1st beginning at 10:30 a.m., we will have a video presentation honoring our saints with photos and remembrances from our members. The worship service will then begin at 11:00 a.m. as usual.

Christmas Candlelight Worship –

Youth, college students, and their families are invited to join in worship on the front lawn of Pleune-Mobley Sunday evening Dec. 20th at 5:00 p.m. We’ll have some of our favorite hymns, prayers, and scripture readings from our traditional 11:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Service. We’ll even sing “In Bethle-hem!” We will provide candles for everyone. Please bring your own chairs and face masks and plan to join us (socially distanced, of course) for this worship service

Hand in Hand Ministries Legacy Breakfast

While we are not able to gather for the Legacy Breakfast, we couldn't wait a whole year to bring our Hand in Hand family together! Instead, we are planning a special virtual event. Joinus for the HandinHandVirtual Family Re-union on November 17, 2020 at 4:00 pm via Facebook Live. For those of you without Facebook, we will record it and send it to you. Please RSVP to: [email protected]

Dare to Care Mobile Food Pantries

While we do not want anyone to volunteer for something that they do not feel comfortable doing, we want the congregation to know that the two Mobile Food Pantries that we have connections with (Portland Avenue and Grace Hope) are still running once a month. (Portland –Tuesday, November 3 at 9:45 am; Smoketown –Tuesday, November 17 at 1:30 pm) Dare to Care has a finely tuned system where all food pick up is non-contact, social dis-tancing is enforced, and LOTS of safety measures are being upheld. This has been crucial for the populations that we serve because it is allowing them free nutritious food in a time when many of them have lost income and are surrounded by uncertainty. We want to thank the volunteers who help keep our partnerships going during this difficult time.

Puzzle Exchange

– Stop by the office during our regular office hours (9:00-3:00). Bring a puzzle to leave and take a puzzle with you! We have puzzle difficulties of all abilities (100 pieces – 1000 pieces). If you would prefer to mail your puzzles into the office, Kathleen will call you and consult about your favorite things before mailing a puzzle back to you! If you would like a puzzle delivered to your home for an exchange there, let Doodle know

Yard Signs

- Highland has created some new yard signs for those interested in displaying them in their own yards. Signs will be available in the office for pick up M-F from 9:00 a.m.

-3:00 pm. $10 suggested donation. These signs will also be displayed in front of the church to make a statement to anyone who might be walking or driving by the building.

The Reopening Task Force has been meeting since April to assess the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on our programing and worship at Highland Presbyterian Church. In mid-October, the Task Force met to discuss setting a target date, with preceding benchmarks, for the start of in-person worship. In addition to these external targets we have taken steps to reduce the potential exposure to the virus during worship including the installation of two different systems that are cleaning the air more thoroughly than traditional air filters – including a Ultraviolet Light system and an electrostatic process that charges and collects air particles.Among the benchmarks that must be met were, opening of public schools, a decrease of new cases over a minimum of two weeks, and specific guidelines established for participation in worship. Following the discussion, a consensus was formed that the Task Force is not ready to set a target date for worship to resume. It is unlikely that regular Sunday in-person worship will begin before January. Meanwhile, we continue our outdoor services at 9 a.m. on the lawn in front of the Pleune-Mobley Center. and will continue the live stream service on-line at 11 a.m. On Christmas Eve, we will hold an outdoor service in the parking lot, staring at 3:00 p.m. The later service on Christmas Eve will broadcast at 8 p.m.

We thank you for your ongoing support of Highland Presbyterian Church as we live through these unique days.

AV Help Needed!

We are looking for volunteers to help run our Audio/Video broadcasting equipment. We have new streaming equipment and are looking for volunteers for Sunday services. If you are interested in helping with sound & video, please contact Rob Miller ([email protected]). Training will be provided. Youth who volunteer are eligible for Fundraising Credit for summer trips.

BELL CHOIRS

The Bells have arrived! They came literally as I was writing this article. There are currently 25 boxes totaling to a weight of 772.4 lbs. The next step is to carefully unpack and check to make sure all pieces are present, accounted for, and undamaged. If you have contacted me about interest in the bells, then you probably have already received a survey. Please do fill this form out as it will help me evaluate how we proceed. As we stand today, we have over 30 people interested in ringing. A 5-ocatave bell choir is generally 18 players, therefore, we will have more than one choir. If you are interested in ringing but have not contacted me, it is not too late. All are welcome.

I know many of you would like to contribute to this new branch of our music ministry, and I encourage you do to so. Like our choirs and HPC Orchestra, bells will need our continued commitment, so that it may flourish and thrive. We will always need music, accessories, maintenance materials, and even additional bells

to sustain and grow into the future. Your help is vital. If you would like to contribute to the bell program, a donation to the Rapier Fund with a specified designation to the bell program would be so greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am more than happy to chat with you.

CHOIR ZOOM

Chancel Choir generally meets Thursday nights at 7 pm on Zoom. We generally socialize, listen to music, and play musical games. If you are interested in joining us or have any other questions about choir, please email me.

MUSIC READING CLASS

If you have always wanted to participate in music, but have felt intimated by sheet music, we offer a class on how to read. All are welcome! We meet via Zoom at 7:30 pm on Wednesday nights. It is only about an hour long, and it is a great opportunity to learn how to read music in a safe, fun, and friendly environment. To receive a link to the class, please email me.

MUSIC MINISTRY INFRASTRUCTURE

During this time, I have decided to take an opportunity to restructure our space so that it better serves our needs in the music ministry. I am currently in the process of reorganizing the Music Library as well converting Conference Room B into our sacristy. Our next project will be the choir room. If you are in choir and would like to help redecorate and organize the choir room, please email me.

Children

s News

Sunday School in November

–Children’s Sunday School will continue online in November with one change to the Preschool class. It will now meet at 9:15 using the same link as the K-3rd grade class. Preschoolers will receive the same materials as the K-3rd grade class and can stay online to participate or log off when it feels right. Here is the Sunday School schedule for November:

9:15 –Preschool (3-year-old and 4-year-old classes) 9:30 –Kindergarten-3rd grade class

10:00 – 4th-5th grade class

Please let Doodle know if you have any questions.

Roots

– 3rd-5th graders are invited to two youth gatherings in November: Nov. 8th and Nov. 22nd. Each of those gatherings will be on the patio at the church from 4:00-4:45. Please wear a mask and plan to social distance. In the case of poor weather, we’ll move to a zoom meeting.

Christmas Cards for College Students

–Children and their families are encouraged to send/bring Christmas cards for our college students to church throughout November! You can make them out to a specific student, ask Doodle for a specific student, or simply make a generic card that we can send to anyone! We’ll be putting these cards with candy into a Christmas stocking for all of our college students to receive in early December.

Christmas Pageant/Advent Workshop

– This year we will film our Christmas Pageant outdoors and use it as part of our 11:00 worship on December 20th! To do this, we need two things:

• If your child plays a musical instrument and can submit a video of themselves playing a Christmas song to Doodle by Dec. 5th, we will use that in the Pageant.

• We need children of all ages to sign up for parts that will be filmed on December 5th and 6th at the church.

Families, please let Doodle know if your child wants a speaking part for the Christmas Pageant by November 22nd and if there’s any specific part your child is interested in. 4th-5th graders

will get the largest parts. Children in K-3rd grade will typically get smaller parts. Children younger than kindergarten are encouraged to be animals who will have an appearance in the pageant, but not a speaking part. Then, families (no matter what part in the pageant the kids have) should sign up for a time to come film their part of the pageant on December 5th or 6th. Those sign-ups will come out via-email in mid-November. Please sign up for a time for all of your children to come to the playground at church and film.

Nursery & Weekday School

The Highland Presbyterian Church Nursery & Weekday School has been enjoying cool fall temperatures and lots of outdoor play! The children have spent time painting, drawing, singing, running, climbing, digging, riding and laughing in our wonderful outdoor spaces. Since we reopened our doors, we've noticed that the children have adapted extraordinarily quickly to

"school life" and are so happy just being together. Humans need relationship with each other, and this is evidenced so clearly in how the children have responded to, once again,

being in community with friends after months of distancing. Our staff feels grateful to be in the presence of such joy; we are inspired and lifted by it. Although we are keeping our groups small this year, we do have a very few spaces remaining in several classes. If you are looking for a joy-filled preschool experience for your young child, we hope you will reach out to us to learn more. Happy
