The International Teachers

Program Philosophy

The International Teachers Program (ITP) is a faculty-development program organized by theInternational Schools of Business Management (ISBM), a group of ten leading business schools located in Europe and the United States. ITP also welcomes business educators from outside ISBM.

ITP has served over 1,000 high-caliber faculty and educators from many countries since it started more than 30 years ago. During this period, the Program has rotated between ISBM Schools. ITP will be hosted by the Kellogg School of Management in 2010 and 2011.

Business education is simultaneously one of the most challenging and exciting endeavors. Business plays an important role in many of the world’s major challenges and opportunities, from the environment to globalization. It is our role as educators to prepare leaders for the future to be capable of turning every challenge into an opportunity. It is our challenge to combine rigor and relevance so that our students can analyze an issue in depth and generate new ideas that are applicable in practice.

As we look to the future of business education, the following trends stand out:

Our students are increasingly diverse in terms of educational background, culture, age, and experience. The business education environment is increasingly competitive, and the expectations of our students

and their prospective employers continue to rise.

As businesses globalize and the pace and complexity grow, integrative thinking on the part of our graduates is essential for their future success.

Faculty are being challenged to excel at both research and teaching in an increasingly demanding environment.

The International Teachers Program leverages top educational experts and practitioners drawn from around the world in a highly-interactive learning environment. Participants will leave the Program with improved skills and a greater understanding of a wide range of teaching techniques, styles, methods, and formats.

A General Overview

Business education requires the ability to blend theory and practice in an engaging manner. As educators, our challenge is to help students develop broad, holistic frameworks for analyzing business, while each one of us focuses on going deep into our area of expertise. We want our students to learn integrative thinking while we teach them functional topics in depth. To be successful in this effort, business educators need to develop a unique set of skills and capabilities.

TheInternational Teachers Programis an intensive faculty-development program dedicated to helping business educators develop suitable skills and capabilities to be successful in their careers. The Program benefits from the participation of a diverse group of top-notch teachers and professionals from around the world who not only have a passion for teaching business topics but also a passion for teaching how to teach. They form a unique faculty whose objective is to provide Program participants with ideas, suggestions and techniques to improve their skills and the way they teach and interact with students and executives. The Program also provides several opportunities for participants to exchange ideas and learn from each other.

Improving Skills

A complete business instructor must be able to manage a wide range of elements:

1. Integration of Content:ensuring that the material being taught integrates with other areas that students are learning and provides a holistic framework they can bring to business;

2. Tools and Techniques:designing effective presentations, delivery of lectures, leading case discussion, the use of simulations, and the interaction between teaching and media. Active learning can be profitably used in order to enhance the instructor’s performance;

3. Different Contexts:undergraduate, MBAs, executives, and large audiences must be approached with different styles even if the topic is the same.

Program Structure

The Program is structured over a period of six months and ends with a Residential Module in July. Prior to the Residential Module, the participants work on their Professional Development Project (PDP) with the support of the Program Director and Coaching Faculty. The PDP may focus on new course development, enhancement of an existing course, development of a curriculum or the link between research and teaching.

Program Schedule

The Kellogg School of Management is hosting the ITP for two consecutive years, and both Programs have the same structure and schedule. Each Program starts with a six month pre-work module. The First Program’s residential module runs

July 4–11, 2010. The Second Program’s residential module runsJuly 3–10, 2011. The calendar is as follows:

January – June:Pre-module work on the Professional Development Project (PDP);

July:Residential Module;

July:Admission to the ITP Alumni Network.

Curriculum

The curriculum will consist of the following components:

1. A professional development project (such as a new course, upgrade of an existing course, development of a new curriculum) that is developed prior to the residential module with online feedback from coaches and faculty. 2. A mini MBA where faculty will discuss

the core components of an MBA including strategy, finance, marketing, organizational behavior, economics, accounting and operations using a variety of pedagogical elements. The goal of this segment is two-fold— (i) To provide key concepts from

all basic disciplines that allow a participant to integrate their topic with the rest of a student’s business education;

(ii) To illustrate a variety of pedagogical elements such as lectures, cases, mini-cases, multi-media and interactive exercises that are used in the various disciplines. 3. Sessions focused on tool development

such as effective presentation, teaching cases, active learning, and effective lecturing.

4. A focus on the integration of research and teaching.

5. Coaching sessions where participants present and get direct feedback from coaches.
