Belfast Royal Academy

Our school…

Belfast Royal Academy is the oldest school in the city and we even have our very own castle building: the Crombie! As we have over 220 years worth of experience, we certainly know a thing or two about teaching. With age comes not only experience, but also an amazing selection of activities for our pupils and an outstanding reputation for academic achievement – and don’t worry, all the teachers are much younger than the school! At Belfast Royal Academy boys and girls from different cultural and

religious backgrounds learn together in a school which aims for academic excellence. Our location - close to the city centre - combined with excellent transport links, means that we have pupils here from all over the

city and from further afield: Glenarm, Glenavy, Lisburn, Larne, Moira, Templepatrick and Bangor! Our city

location also means that we have more than one site. Our well-known red school buses - not quite the Hogwarts Express - take our pupils to our sports grounds beside Belfast Castle and to Roughfort (Mallusk) for games. We are also very lucky to have excellent facilities on site, including a Swimming Pool, Fitness Suite, Sports Hall,

Drama Studio, Computer Suites, Library, newly refurbished Science Labs and first rate classrooms.

All of our pupils are encouraged to develop their talents in whichever field they choose and we seek to ensure that they will leave School as well-rounded, confident and happy individuals who have a sense of belonging

to this special place.

We provide a stimulating and safe environment; our pupils are taught by teachers who are specialists in their subject area and cared for by a pastoral team who look after them and help with any worries they have. If you choose to come to B.R.A. you will have the opportunity to join lots of clubs and societies, take part in the largest Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme in the U.K., become an actor in our school plays or a musician in our many different music groups.

Our pupils experience a world of opportunity. Indeed, the world is truly at your feet at B.R.A. as we have strong international links with France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Malawi and Bangladesh. Every year we organise trips to these countries and our pupils experience a different way of life and see how other young people are educated. Belfast Royal Academy can provide you with the best possible experience of school - we recognise that these years are the foundation for life and we seek to offer you the best stepping stone into the future.

Our Pastoral Care System...

The central figure for you will be your Head of Year. Boys and girls have their own Head of Year and this

person will remain your Head of Year for your entire journey through school. Your Head of Year will:

• Get to know you and be a person to whom you can talk

• Help and support you in your progress through school

• Encourage you to take part in activities within school

• Offer you help and advice, if you need it

• Guide and direct you, and other members of your Form,

in standards of good behaviour, personal appearance and punctuality

• Help you to experience the fullness of school life

Working with the Head of Year is your Class Tutor; this is the teacher in charge of Registration. You will see them every day and they will also stay with your class all the way through school. Your Class Tutor will guide you in the daily life of school, providing information on events and activities, ensuring that you understand the use of the Homework Diary and helping you with any problems you may encounter.

Another important person in daily life within school is Matron. She is a registered nurse who supervises our sick room – she will care for you if you are ill and will also provide you with help, support and guidance. As you progress through the school you will also be able to use the experience and knowledge of the members of the Careers Department as you start to think more about your future: jobs you might like and universities to which you may want to apply.

The only thing you have to remember is that everyone is here to help you!

For more information on our School Policies see the information pack provided at the back of this Prospectus.

I was once a P7 pupil. I know what it is like to feel the pressure of trying to find a new school that suits you.

When I came to the Open Night here, I knew this was the school for me so when I found out that I was going

to B.R.A. I was over the moon with joy. I am well into my first year here and am really enjoying it. This is

my perspective of the school based on my experiences so far... The Delights of B.R.A.

You will be overwhelmed by the amount of fun involved in being here; you can pick what sport you want to play and there are loads to choose from.

The clubs and societies are a superb way to meet friends and there is always one which is right for you whatever you are in to: sport, mathematics, science or board games. The great thing is there is something to do almost every lunchtime.

If you are a very musical person like me, there are lots of clubs to join including guitar club, song writing club, the school choir or music groups. If you like science you can join Young Einstein and carry out lots of experiments; if you like being outdoors you can join the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

The classes are new and exciting; you study some subjects for the very first time. The timetable is really good

with lots of variety everyday and classes are good fun. I have made lots of friends in all my different classes and am really enjoying life at B.R.A. It is nice to know that all the teachers look out for you and prepare you for the future. I can’t wait to move into Form Two!

Getting to and from School

Transport

More than half of our pupils travel to school by bus or train - many travel from Glengormley, Jordanstown and Carrickfergus, some travel from further across Belfast. It is even possible to get to school from as far as

Bangor, Larne or Lisburn by public transport - so there’s no stopping you! We work closely with Translink and

use our own buses to make sure that we cater for as many pupils as possible. In the morning

• Our own school buses (the big red ones) do a series of runs from York Gate Halt every morning from 7.50am.

• A school special bus runs from North/West Belfast leaving from Upper Crumlin Road and Bilston Road at 7.50am and travels via the Crumlin Road, Twadell Avenue, Woodvale Road, Shankill Road and Agnes Street.

After school

1. At the end of the day, pupils who go to York Gate Halt go on buses to the station – staff are on duty to ensure that pupils get the correct bus.

2. A blue Ulsterbus is available for pupils going to Jordanstown and Greenisland.

3. A Metro bus serves North West Belfast and comes at 3.40pm each day. 4. In addition to these services we also have four special buses going to:

a) Ballyhenry b) Carnmoney c) Glengormley

d) Ballyhenry and Carnmoney

All pupils leaving school by public transport are supervised by staff; staff will be outside school, at metro stops and in Brookhill Avenue to ensure that you get on the correct bus.

For more information on Transport, more detailed times and routes, please visit our Transport Room.
