Through Estate and Financial

Planning

By naming the San Diego Blood Bank in your will or living trust, you can strengthen the San Diego Blood Bank for future generations.

Many of our friends set aside a certain percentage or dollar amount for the blood bank after they have provided for their heirs. Others leave life insurance, IRA’s, or other assets. We would be happy to discuss how a planned gift may benefit you, your heirs, and the San Diego Blood Bank. Contact us for additional information or assistance at 619-400-8176.

Looking for the perfect gift?

We have a suggestion.

How about a brick… or a

tile…or even a bench?

You can include a message on any of those, and it will be placed at the Commemorative Entry Plaza at the San Diego Blood Bank’s new headquarters and main donor center. Your commemorative brick, tile or bench will become a lasting, living memory as part of our plaza which will be welcoming more than 18,000 donors a year. A donor making a gift between $200 and $5,000 will have a choice among various sizes of personalized bricks and wall tiles. Donations between $100 and $199 will scroll your name for one year on an electronic Distinguished Donor Digital Wall prominently displayed inside the main donor center.

‘Bloody Good Time’

Donating blood as a

birthday gift!

Donor John Adkins’ family and friends joke with him that his birthday parties are quite draining. That’s because for the last eight of those birthdays they’ve celebrated at the San Diego Blood Bank, with all party-goers giving blood. This year, 13 of John’s friends and families joined him to donate and then headed over to Sanfilippo’s restaurant in Hillcrest to continue the party.

John turned 57 this year. He’s a retired firefighter who says at this point in his life he doesn’t need gifts, thus the idea to have his friends and family celebrate with him by giving to others. “It’s just part of giving back” John says.

A very “haunted” course.

In partnership with the San Diego Blood Bank to help save lives every

day with safe, adequate supplies of donated blood.

$70,000 in major support

saves umbilical cord blood

units

Major grants from the San Diego Foundation donor-advised funds supported by Audrey Geisel and John and Dorothy Helm have made it possible for the blood bank to save approximately 1,000 umbilical cord blood units. This represents 40% of its inventory of this special type of blood. The blood bank used the gifts to order a

sophisticated liquid nitrogen freezer for storing cord blood at temperatures lower than minus 150˚ Celsius. The support arrived just in time to allow the safe move of the units from the old Upas Street building to the Cell Therapy Center located at the new headquarters.

Cord blood units are currently listed on the National Marrow Donor Program registry to be searched for possible transplant matches for patients with leukemia and other diseases or conditions. Saving 1,000 cord blood units meant preventing the loss of up to 1,000 potentially life-saving patient matches.

Audrey Geisel is the president of the Dr. Seuss Foundation, which has generously granted funds to the San Diego Blood Bank on many past occasions. Mr. and Mrs. Helm have been generous and extraordinarily faithful donors for more than 15 years.

Helping to Recognize

San Diego County Companies

Half of the San Diego Blood Bank’s blood supply is collected through mobile blood drives held at private companies, churches, schools, civic groups and more. Mercer Health & Benefits salutes these caring organizations by helping to cover costs of the annual Chairperson’s

Recognition Event. This event is organized by the San Diego Blood Bank every year to thank the chairpeople who help organize these lifesaving mobile blood drives. Thank you Mercer Health and Benefits.

While local hospital patients were the real winners on Tuesday, November 22, at the Chargers Blood Drive at the Town & Country Convention Center, Virgilio “Jong” Miclat of Chula Vista and his family felt extremely lucky too. The Miclat family won the Chargers Blood Drive annual Honda Car Giveaway!

Jong and Jane Miclat bought 11 tickets for the Honda raffle when, as blood donors, they received the offer in the mail from the San Diego Blood Bank. Jane says they bought the tickets “first, to help… and second, because they really need a car!” At the 33rd annual Chargers Blood Drive, the ticket buyers who had been chosen at random each picked a car key in front of the packed

crowd at the convention center. Then one by one, each contestant tried his or her key in the door of the Honda CR-V. Before Jong stepped up as the seventh contestant to try his key, his 9-year old daughter Jesa, kissed the key for good luck. It worked!

About 3,000 people turned out for the 33rd annual Chargers Blood Drive, helping the blood bank collect more than 1,000 pints of blood for local hospital patients. The Chargers Blood Drive was made possible by presenting sponsor San Diego County Credit Union, and major sponsors Honda Dealers of San Diego County, Grossmont Healthcare District, Darrell and Kathy Issa and the Issa Family Foundation, AT&T and American Icon Autographs.

Blood banking is more closely aligned than ever with the operations of biotech companies and the life sciences. So this year the San Diego Blood Bank shed its old skin and moved into vastly larger, better designed facilities to be able to adapt to innovation and increasingly stringent regulations for years to come. It is now one of the most efficient blood banks in the country. The new site is approximately 2½ miles east of downtown, conveniently close to Interstates 5 and 805, CA-15, and CA-94.

The facilities are home to the organization’s 10 bloodmobiles and most of its 280 employees. On a typical day, the quality control, platelet culturing, immunohematology, and components labs process more than 300 units of blood for distribution to local hospitals. These include all the pediatric blood products used at Rady Children’s Hospital.

A special area is reserved to store more than 2,000 umbilical cord blood units in super-cold liquid nitrogen freezers. Demand for umbilical cord blood, rich in stem cells, gathered without harm to mothers or babies, is growing with the rapid development of regenerative medicine. The morning starts early in the spacious

warehouse and garage areas. These are where bloodmobile crews transfer the day’s supplies from carts prepared the night before onto the departing mobile collection vehicles.

Thanks to a new, massive emergency power generator on the premises, the blood bank’s operations were not disrupted by the September 9 blackout. No blood products were lost, and the organization was able to come to the rescue of hospitals affected by the power loss. In one instance, the blood bank replaced the entire blood supply lost at one site due to refrigeration failure. With 95,000 square feet of space, the new building is more than twice the size of the old main building on Upas Street adjacent to Balboa Park.

We’re proud of our new home and are ready to show it off to the blood bank’s friends at any time. If you would like to have a behind-the-scenes look at the blood banking process, please contact us for tour dates and times. Call Claudine in the Foundation at 619-400-8166.
