Pastor’s Corner
Happy Easter to everyone! “Jesus lives who once was dead!” The resurrection IS our hope and our strength. Only once in my life since childhood, have I not been in church on Easter Sunday. I had bad bronchitis that Easter. This is hard as many of you have shared with me by email. It is especially hard on those who had been waiting for baptism, confirmation and First Holy Communion last night at the Easter Vigil.
Not long ago the Holy Father walked the empty streets of Rome to visit, place flowers, and pray before the Crucifix carried in procession in 1522 to pray for an end to the plague and before the icon of Our Lady, Salus Populi Roma-ni, his favorite Marian image in Rome. Prayer and science are both needed and must work together during this pandemic. He had these religious objects moved to the front of St. Peter Basilica for his special Urbi et Orbi bless-ing.
Remember that when the sacrament of penance is not available, one should present one’s sorrow directly to God and say a good Act of Contrition. Sins, including mortal ones, are forgiven. When opportunity arises, mention the latter in your next confession just to keep yourself honest. A very simple Act of Contrition that is found in the Rite of Penance is: “Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Remember also the fact that we can make Spir-itual Communions when the sacrament is not available. Use these or your own words: “Lord, I am not able to receive you now sacramentally. Enter at least spiritually into my heart. I em-brace you as being already there and unite my-self wholly to you. Never let me be separated from you. Amen.”
If you have any sort of family emergency that you need me to be attentive to, please contact me. Call the office and if no answer, press 1—it will transfer to my cellphone.

The Parish Safeguard the Children
Committee
The purpose of The Safeguard the Children Committee of St. Serra Parish is to keep chil-dren safe from abuse, particularly from sexual abuse. The SJSP Safeguard Committee is headed by a volunteer parishioner and has among its membership paid representatives of Mission Bell Preschool and the parish Faith For-mation program. There are volunteer parishion-ers at large who may be involved in other parish organizations. And, of course, Father Leo, our pastor, participates. All members of the Commit-tee are available if anyone wishes to express concerns about the safety for our children. You can ask the parish receptionist to connect you any Committee member if you want to discuss safety issues or if you want more information about the Safeguard the Children program.

Independent Victims Assistance
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has entered into an arrangement with a firm to provide rec-ompense to victims of clergy sexual abuse. It is similar to other programs established by Mr. Feinberg and Ms. Biros in New York, New Jer-sey, Pennsylvania and Colorado.
You can find documents from the California Catholic Conference with more information re-garding the program at this link: https:// www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/california-catholic-dioceses-announce-new-compensation -program-for-abuse-victims-300849889.html.
SEEDS OF FAITH
There is a brevity, a certain terseness, in the scripture readings for Easter Sunday. Peter’s speech in Acts is built of direct, pointed sentences. Paul’s letters are based on straightforward creed-like state-ments. Even the Gospel story only briefly recounts what will turn out to be one of the most remarkable events in human history—the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Advertising agents call these encap-sulated points of information “bullet points.” Scrip-ture scholars call them kerygmata, or “kernels” of our faith. Actually, “kernels” or “seeds” are good terms for these statements, since throughout the Easter season, we will hear in the Acts of the Apos-tles, the Letters of Paul, and the Gospel accounts of the days following the Resurrection exactly how these kerygmata began to flower, how they contin-ued to grow through the life of the early church. May these Easter “seeds” of faith serve a similar purpose for us, too, so that the life of the Risen Christ will flourish in us and through our witness in the coming days.

only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we
endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In
place of our anxiety, give us your peace.
Je-sus Christ, heal us.
