The Organising Committee, the city of Århus, the organising ori-enteering clubs and the Danish Orienteering Federation are pleased to welcome all mem-bers of the international orien-teering community to the World Orienteering Championships 2006 (WOC 2006) in Denmark. The city of Aarhus is beautifully located beside the bay of Aarhus. The city has 300,000 inhabitants and is well-known for its fl ou-rishing cultural life and as a lea-ding international education and conference centre.

The WOC 2006 Centre will be situated right in the heart of Aarhus with the Scandinavian

Centre Aarhus and Ridehuset, the adjacent exhibition centre, as the main focal points.

Aarhus is the capital city of the Jutland region, where some of the best and most challenging orienteering terrain in Denmark is found within easy reach. It is the best of Danish continental terrain, internationally neutral but both technically and physi-cally challenging, and fair for all competitors. The selected com-petition areas have rarely been used for orienteering, if at all. A six-day open competition, Danish WOC-Tour 2006, will be held concurrently with WOC. 4 out of the 6 races will use the

same terrain as the WOC races. We are looking forward to wel-coming all friends of oriente-ering to the World Orienteoriente-ering Championships 2006 in Aarhus. Sten Ejsing

The locations of the event arenas will be published as soon as they have been finally decided. This will be no later than in Bulletin 2.

The Competition Rules for IOF Foot Orienteering Events (edition of January 1, 2004) apply for WOC 2006, including the following rules relating to participation in World Orienteering Championships:

5.7 There is one class for women and one for men. There are no age re-strictions.

6.1 A competitor may represent only one Federation during any one ca-lendar year.

6.2 Competitors who are representing a Federation shall have full passport-holding citizenship of the country of that Federation.

6.3 Each participating Federation shall appoint a team manager to act as a contact person between the team and the organiser. It is the team managerʼs duty to see that the team receives all necessary information.

6.4 Competitors participate at their own risk. Insurance against ac-cidents shall be the responsibility of their Federation or themselves, according to national regulations. 6.5 All competitors represent a

Federation. Each Federation may enter a team of up to 14 compe-titors – up to 7 women and 7 men – and a number of team officials. The organiser shall fix the maxi-mum number of officials per team, in accordance with the available facilities. This maximum number shall be the same for each team and shall be at least 5.

6.6 In each qualification race, every Federation may enter up to 3 wo-men and 3 wo-men and, in addition, the current World Champions for the distance may be entered by their Federation(s) provided they are members of the Federationʼs team. In the final, only the compe-titors placed number 15 and better in each qualification race heat may participate.

6.7 In the Relay, each Federation may enter one womenʼs team and one menʼs team, each consisting of 3 team members. Incomplete teams and teams with runners from more than one Federation are not allo-wed. Under no circumstances may persons other than entered com-petitors participate in the competi-tion.

Embargoed Areas

With reference to the IOF Com-petition Rules (article 26.6), the listed areas are embargoed for all potential WOC 2006 team members (runners, team leader, coach, doctor, etc.) as well as others with strong links to elite squads, on and from the issue of Bulletin 1.

Spelt out in detail it means that • no organised orienteering

whatsoever may take part in the embargoed areas until af-ter WOC 2006.

• no training sessions, i.e. run-ning/races, testing route choi-ces etc., are allowed in these areas

• no-one with potential connec-tion to a team (athlete or other function) may visit the embar-goed areas with the excep-tion of passage on surfaced public roads. With reference to the areas Mindeparken and Universitsparken it is also allo-wed to go into Aarhus stadium and arena (Atlétion) and visit buildings on the university campus.

Linå Vesterskov Addit - Løndal Himmelbjerget

Hjortsballe Krat, Gjern Bakker A mixture of natural and planted deciduous and coniferous forest with many contour details and few paths. Mature coniferous forest with paths and rides is also present. The runnability is mostly good. Visibility is re-stricted in natural forest. There are only a few rock features.

Linå Vesterskov, Løndal/Addit, Himmelbjerget

Planted deciduous and conife-rous forest of different ages with a well-developed road and path net. The ground is firm and clear in old forest with the exception of a few areas with brackens. The visibility and runnability is gene-rally very good. There are only a few rock features. The areas are

very hilly with up to 120 metres height difference and with much contour detail.

The following areas, also indicated on the map below, have been designated as offi cial training areas for teams participating in WOC 2006. More areas will be added gradually as they are map-ped. The maps are surveyed and drawn 2003/4 by the map-makers who will be producing the WOC competition maps.

A. Silkeborg Nordskov. Relevant for long distance. B. Silkeborg Vesterskov 1:10 000 and 1:15 000. Relevant for long distance and relay.

C. Silkerborg Østerskov 1:10 000 and 1:15 000. Relevant for long distance .

D. Silkeborg Sønderskov. Relevant for long distance and relay.

E. Sletten. Relevant for middle distance and relay. Relevant areas not surveyed by the WOC

map-makers:

Hjermind. 1:10.000, drawn 1999. Relevant for middle distance and long distance.

Egekrattet 1:10.000 drawn 2004. Relevant for middle distance.

Relevant training areas for the sprint competiti-ons will be available in 2005.

In general, all the training areas are relevant for every competition (except sprint). The type of fo-rest for qualifi cation and fi nal in each discipline is quite similar.

For all training in Danish forests, permis-sion has to be obtained from the forest owners. Organisation of training without this permission is not allowed. All contact with forest owners must be made through Torben Utzon (see below).

Maps can be purchased offset-printed. It is also possible to purchase a CD-rom with the maps in JPEG format, as long as the purchaser undertakes to pay for prints and copies of the maps. The map files can therefore be used for course planning in conjunction with (e.g.) the course planning soft-ware “Condes”, and maps with courses can then be printed.

In all the training forests, a number of areas have been designated as out of bounds. It is very important that these areas are respected and kept clear of all training. The areas are marked in the map files on the CD-rom which can be purchased.

All controls set out in the training areas must be labelled with the name of the group and the dates when the controls are put out and will be removed.

The city of Aarhus and the surrounding region off er a lot of accommodation options, from camp-sites through to four-star hotels.

The offi cial event and media centre for the WOC 2006 will be the Radisson SAS Scandinavian Congress Centre, adjacent to the Town Hall, the Music Hall, the new Art Museum ARoS, and the old and charming exhibition centre Ridehuset which will be turned into the main social gathering point for the competitors, spectators, and the public.

All national teams, invited guests and IOF offi ci-als will be off ered reasonable priced accommoda-tion at the Hotel Radisson SAS where 234 modern rooms are available.

Further, within a short walking distance from the WOC 2006 Centre a total number of 1,600 hotel beds may be found. Budget accommodation for participants and guests in the form of hostels, schools, colleges and camp-sites will also be made available within a short distance of the the WOC 2006 Centre.
