Thank you for choosing Laurier Athletics and Recreation! We encourage you to explore

our facilities and ask questions about things that you are unsure about. We are here to

make your time spent in our facility smooth and enjoyable.

Our facilities are home to several inter-university sport teams, student intramural

programming, recreation classes, kinesiology labs and booking space for events,

conferences and community sport leagues.

Included in this package you will find all the information that you will need in order to

have a positive experience in our facility. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask

one of our Hawk Desk staff.

All locker memberships are activated the day they are purchased and expire after the allotted length of the membership.

A valid Laurier OneCard serves as a facility membership for all full-time and part-time students. Faculty, staff, alumni and community members can purchase a facility membership from the Hawk Desk. Alumni must present their alumni card in order to qualify for the applicable discount.All members and students MUST swipe their facility membership card or OneCard to obtain entry into any of our facilities (Athletic Complex, Stadium or Alumni Field). Failure to swipe your card, or not have your card when entering our facilities, will result in admittance being denied.

Day Passes

Day Passes are available for purchase at the Athletic Complex Hawk Desk for $10.00 (HST included). Day Passes are active for the day in which they are purchased and expire when the facility closes for the day. With the day pass you are provided with the same amentities and services available with a facility membership.

Membership Add-Ons

Lockers

Lockers can also be rented at a cost (half & full lockers) at the Athletic Complex Hawk Desk however the number of lockers available is limited. Listed in the rental agreement, lockers must be cleared out by the end of the rented term a membership has been purchased for. If lockers are not cleared out a $10 fee will be charged.

A Towel Service can be purchased for an additional cost (see below) at the Athletic Complex Hawk Desk. This service can be purchased as a daily or monthly membership. In order to obtain a towel from our Hawk Desk any student or facility member must have purchased this service.

Recreation Classes

Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Athletics & Recreation is home to varsity sports as well as numerous intramural, recreation & fitness programs. Over 6,000 students at Laurier participate in 30 intramural sports and 40 recreational programs annually.

All Recreational classes are available at an additional cost due to the instructional component of the class. Registration takes place early in each term through an online process available at

www.laurierathletics.com/registration.

Group Exercise classes incorporate hard workouts with fun environments! Have an instructor push you through the

following classes: Cyclefit, Bootcamp, Bootylicious, Pilates, Power Yoga, Zumba, and much more!

$85.00 (plus HST) for one semester

Climbing Wall

The indoor climbing wall reaches 25 feet and simulates many natural contours and foot holds. It is specifically designed for teaching basic climbing and mountaineering

skills. Our indoor rock climbing gym is a great place for new climbers to start improving their upper-body strength or for experienced climbers to fit regular

workouts into their weeks.

$20.00 (plus HST) for one semester 1 day pass = $5.00

Dance

Many different styles and levels are offered to suit a multitude of participants. All classes occur weekly for 10

weeks and are 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. Each class creates a dance routine that will be performed at the end of each semester in the Dance Showcase. Dance

styles include Acro, Hip Hop, Ballet, Competitive, Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, and much more!

Group Training

Instead of working one-on-one with a personal trainer, a small group of participants are put through workouts with the supervision of a trainer. You still get the hard workout and guidance provided with personal training, but you are sharing the experience with a small group of people.

Type Description Class Information

Weightlifting Club

Become advanced in powerlifting and weightlifting movements such as the squat, deadlift, shoulder press,

bench press, clean, clean & jerk and the snatch. This program is designed to help you safely perform these movements and maximize your strength under the bar. Our trainer will go over mobility and stability to help overcome limitations. “We fail at the margins of our experiences” -

Greg Glassman, don’t fail to experience something because you think it is outside of your capabilities.

Women On Weights

Working out during Women’s only hours? Take your workouts to the next level by utilizing a program that is designed to get you lifting safely and effectively. Learn to

work your whole body in limited time and follow a program that will bring you to a whole new fitness level. Become strong and fit with the help of a trainer who has kicked fitness in the chest and is here to help you do the

same. $7.00 per class All year around starting September 15th Mondays from 4:00pm-5:00pm Location: Women-Only Area in FC TRX Bootcamp

The TRX Suspension Trainer is the original, best-in-class workout system that leverages gravity and your bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises. You’re in

control of how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise because you can simply adjust your body

position to add or decrease resistance. Work with a trainer through a full-body workout every week designed

to challenge your endurance and core.

Personal Training

Laurier Personal Training takes pride in offering you a superior training experience. They will conduct an in-depth Fitness Assessment and prescribe a Fitness plan incorporating cutting-edge training techniques tailored towards your own personal fitness needs.

The On-Ramp Program

The On-Ramp Program at the Laurier gym is for anyone of any fitness level. It is a very important place to start. It will include all your programming for training, an introduction on

how to train properly, and guidance and attention from a skilled trainer for 5 sessions. You will be introduced to all movements, skills and requirements so that you can tackle any workout. We want to help you feel comfortable in the

Fitness Centre.

The Real Deal

Ever wonder if what you’re doing is enough? Spend 10 sessions with a trainer to learn new movements and get you started on the right path. Whether you are relatively new or

an advanced gym user, a skilled trainer will show you what it means to work hard. You will leave with a new outlook on

how to train and program to keep you going.

The Long Haul

If you’re looking at this then you know you have goals that you cannot meet alone. This program is for the person who is

dedicated to achieving their goal. Change doesn’t happen overnight. It is hard work and dedication over time. Work with a trainer that is as dedicated to you and your goals. This is a program that changes lives and helps you master

your body.

Services and Amenities

Wilfrid Laurier University houses some of the finest facilities in the country. Along with facility members, many of the facilities offered are available for rent to outside organizations.

Athletic Complex

Location: Located on the North East corner of the Waterloo campus

The Athletic Complex was newly renovated in 2013 with a $5.3-million expansion of the Fitness Centre, front Lobby, and Customer Service Desk (Hawk Desk). With the addition of 3,000 square feet onto the front lobby we were able to expand our level of service at our Hawk Desk. With a grand total of approximately 145,000 square feet, the Athletic Complex features:

• State of the art Fitness Centre

• Alumni Field

• Three-court gymnasium

• Olympic-length swimming pool

• Four dance and aerobics studios and two multi-purpose classrooms

• Cyclefit Studio

• International squash courts

• 25’ Rock climbing wall

Fitness Centre

Location: Room 219 in the Athletic Complex

Laurier’s Fitness Centre just underwent an extensive $5.3-million expansion in 2013, with the addition of 11,000 square feet to the existing floor plan and $800,000 worth of new equipment. Highly trained and knowledgeable staff are available to assist you while you are in the Fitness Centre.

Equipment Highlights

• Over 100 pieces of cardio training equipment, including treadmills, elliptical and lateral

machines, stair climbers, upright and recumbent bikes, an upper-body ergometer, a rope trainer and rowing machines.

• 4 complete cable machine circuits which have been professionally designed to provide a full body workout regardless of your level of experience or fitness.

• Extensive free weight section complete with 6 Hammer Strength Power Racks, rubberized dumbbells and plates, as well as over 15 free weight benches.

• Full TRX Suspension is available for individual use or group classes. Women-Only Program Hours

The 2013 Fitness Centre Expansion saw some great new additions, including a new unique space on the second floor that is closed off at times to become a Women-Only Program Area. The new space includes everything required for a full-encompassing workout such as cardio equipment, circuit machines, incline and decline benches, free-weights, accessories and floor space for stretching and training.

This area is open to all patrons throughout the day, excluding the set times for Women-Only Hours. During these hours, only women are allowed to utilize this space. The Women-Only hours are as follows:

Fitness Centre Policies

• Proper athletic attire (running shoes, athletic shorts/pants and shirt) is to be worn while in the Fitness Centre. No open-toed shoes, dress shoes, or outdoor footwear are permitted. Athletics & Recreation reserves the right to deny access to anyone who is not wearing appropriate and respectful athletic clothing.

• No bags, accessories or jackets are permitted in the Fitness Centre. Complimentary locks and lockers are available from the Hawk Desk.

• All equipment must be sanitized and wiped clean after use. Weights and equipment are to be returned to proper location after each use.

• No cell phone use permitted at any time. If there is an emergency please contact/locate facility staff (in Fitness Centre or at Hawk Desk). Picture taking is not permitted at any time unless written permission is granted by the Department of Athletics & Recreation.

• Use of cardio equipment is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes per cardio piece. They are available on a first come first serve basis!

• Individuals under the age of 17 are considered minors and require supervison by an adult to be in our Fitness Centre. Anyone under the age of 12 is not permitted in the Fitness Centre.

• Please respect the Fitness Centre staff and their instructions.

• Please use appropriate, inclusive and respectful language while in the Fitness Centre.

• The Department of Athletics & Recreation reserves the right to deny access or remove a patron from our facility at any time.

Alumni Field

Location: In front of Athletic Complex, entrance located on King St N.

Alumni Field is home to many students, intramurals, and varsity sports. The field is available for use to students and facility members when there is no external booking taking place. The field is available for rent by external groups throughout the summer for an additional cost.

User Guidelines

• During bookings, spectators must remain off artificial grass field.

• Nothing may be inserted into the turf (i.e. posts, poles, wickets, etc.).

• No smoking, pets, bicycles or skateboards on the artificial grass field.

• No gum or food is permitted on the artificial grass.

• No contact sports on the field (i.e. rugby and football)

• Shoes must be fitted with safety studs of 13mm or 1/2" or less

• Maximum cleat size: 13mm or 1/2" or less for all activities

Gymnasium

Location: Lower level of Athletic Complex

Our 3-court gymnasium is home to Varsity teams, intramurals, open gym patrons, and university exams. With dual-side bleachers, the gymnasium can house over 2,000 viewers during sporting events and can house over 900 students while writing exams. The gym can be segmented for multi-game activities by use of its dividers.

All students and facility members have access to the gymnasium for recreational use during open gym hours. Open gym hours are available online at www.laurierathletics.com on the Facility usage Schedule.

Swimming Pool

Location: Lower level of Athletic Complex (viewing gallery on upper level of Athletic Complex)

This Olympic length (50 m) pool features six lanes and is 3.81m deep. It is home to the Laurier Golden Hawk swimming team, the Region of Waterloo (ROW) Swim Club, the Laurier competitive lifeguarding team, intramural water polo and recreation swim program participants. A gallery is located on the second floor of the Athletic Complex to view the pool activity below. Lane swim times are as follows:

Studios

Location: Lower and upper levels of Athletic Complex, as well as second floor of Fitness Centre

The dance and aerobic studios are located both on the lower level of the Athletic Complex and the second floor of the Fitness Centre. They are built with quality hardwood or rubber flooring, surrounding mirrors, ballet bars and a complete music system. These studios are used for over 50 instructional fitness and dance classes each week during the regular school year. Use of these studios are free of charge for patrons with memberships, but must be booked in advance to guarantee space. Studio 3 (located on the second floor of the Fitness Centre) is used strictly as a drop-in studio and is available to book for 30-minute increments at any time. This space can be booked online through www.laurierathletics.com or at the Hawk Desk.

Cyclefit Studio

Location: Main floor of Fitness Centre

The Fitness Centre features a Cyclefit Studio, equipped with 25 Keiser stationary bikes. The studio is open for use throughout the day at times when there are no classes running. If you would like to participate in cyclefit classes, a Group Exercise Pass can be purchased for an additional cost (refer to Membership Add-Ons above for more information).

Squash Courts

Location: Lower level of Athletic Complex

Laurier’s Athletic Complex houses two International squash courts which are located on the lower level of the Athletic Complex. The courts are offered free of charge for students or facility members. Squash court reservations can be made online, up to 3 days in advance or at the Hawk Desk. Squash racquets and balls can be rented at the Hawk Desk for an additional cost of $3.00 and $5.00 respectively.

Rock Wall

Location: Lower level of Athletic Complex

Laurier's Athletic Complex houses a fun and challenging rock climbing wall. The climbing wall features over 50 fiberglass panels mounted on steel framework providing 15 climbing routes that reach 25 metres in height. Use of the climbing wall is available for an additional fee (refer to Membership Add-Ons above for more detail).

Golden Hawk Lounge

Location: Upper level of the Athletic Complex

The Athletic Complex features the Golden Hawk lounge, a space which celebrates the history and achievements of Golden Hawk Athletics and its athletes over the past five decades. The room is very ideal for meetings and socials and is equipped with many features to facilitate group events.

Change Rooms

Location: Lower level of Athletic Complex

The Laurier change rooms were newly renovated in the Summer of 2012 with upgraded lockers, showers, benches, and tiling. Day lockers are available to every student and facility member, with locks being available for rent at the Hawk Desk. Term and annual lockers are also available for purchase at the Hawk Desk (refer to Membership Add-Ons above for more information).

Hawk Shop Store

Location: Upper level of Athletic Complex

The Hawk Shop offers a variety of products to its customers, ensuring that their experience at the Athletic Complex is a satisfying one. The shop offers everything an athlete might need; from workout/swimming gear and official Laurier Golden Hawk wear, to food, snacks and other convenience items.

The Hawk Shop is open six days a week during the school year and is closed during the summer months. Operational hours can be found on page 3 of this package, under Facility Hours.

University Stadium

Location: East of the Waterloo campus, at 81 Seagram Drive

University Stadium was newly renovated in 2007 and saw its Grand Reopening on September 22, 2007. The $5-million University Stadium Renewal Project involved a complete change of the Stadium's layout, rearranging each existing room in order to ensure a higher level of functionality, as well as the expansion of the main entrance, concessions and washrooms. The Stadium offers space for recreational programs and Kinesiology classrooms. It also features a large gymnasium and Knight-Newbrough field.

Registration Procedures

Recreation Classes

Are you interested in taking part in Laurier Athletics’ Recreation Classes? If so, there are a few simple steps that you need to follow before being able to participate.

1. Register online at www.laurierathletics.com/ecommerce (note: this page can also be accessed through www.laurierathletics.com under the “Shop” heading).

• NOTE: If you do not have an account with Laurier Athletics you will have to make one before being able to register.

2. When registering you have multiple payment options; Credit, OneCard, or in person. Select which option you would prefer.

3. Once online registration is complete you will receive a confirmation code.

4. Come in to the Laurier Athletic Complex and our Hawk Desk staff will be more than happy to complete your registration. You will need your confirmation code in order to pick up your shoe tag. If you chose to pay in person you will need to do so at this time.

Intramurals

Have you decided to join a team and increase your social life while playing some amazing sporting games? Ifso, there are a few simple steps that you need to follow before being able to start.

1. Register online at www.laurierathletics.com/ecommerce (note: this page can also be accessed through www.laurierathletics.com under the “Shop” heading).

• If you do not have an account with Laurier Athletics you will have to make one before being able to register.

2. When registering you will have two options: register as a free-agent or register as a team.

• If registering as a free-agent you will be placed on a team and notified with information using the email provided with your account.

• If registering as a team you will need to provide the names and student numbers of all your team members. You will be notified with information about a Capitan’s meeting using the email provided with your account (Note: when registering as a team you will be required to pay a refundable performance-bond fee).

3. To complete your online registration you have multiple payment options; Credit, OneCard, or in person. Select which option you would prefer.

4. Once online registration is complete you will receive a confirmation code.

5. If you have chosen to pay in person, come in to the Laurier Athletic Complex with your confirmation code and our Hawk Desk staff will be more than happy to complete your registration.

Personal Training

Have you decided to take that extra step and work with a Personal Trainer to reach your fitness goals? If so, there are a few simple steps that you need to follow before being able to start.

• If you do not have an account with Laurier Athletics you will have to make one before being able to register.

2. When registering you will be asked several questions in order to get a better idea of what you are looking for from the program and to decide which personal trainer would best suit you and your goals.

3. To complete your online registration you have multiple payment options; Credit, OneCard, or in person. Select which option you would prefer.

4. Once online registration is complete you will receive a confirmation code.

5. If you have chosen to pay in person, come in to the Laurier Athletic Complex with your confirmation code and our Hawk Desk staff will be more than happy to complete your registration.

6. Once registered, our Personal Training Coordinator will be in contact with you to set you up with one of our phenomenal personal trainers.

Dance Programs

Do you want to learn a new style of dance or continue your passion of dance through our Dance Program? If so, there are a few simple steps that you need to follow before being able to start.

Maps and Parking

Laurier houses many athletic facilities including the Athletic Complex, located at the corner of King Street North and University Avenue West; University Stadium,located on the south side of Seagram Drive off of Albert Street,andAlumni Field,accessed from King Street and is on the east side of campus.

Athletic Complex:

Visitor parking is available on campus in pay & display lots as well as parking meters. On

weekdays, parking permits on-campus are not required after 4:30 pm in all white permit parking areas and after 10:00 pm in all gold permit parking areas. There is no charge for on-campus parking on weekends but please note that free parking is not permitted in any “Reserved” parking spots. No evening or overnight parking is allowed. There is parking available on many of the city streets such as Bricker Ave. Please be advised that this is monitored by the City of Waterloo and there is a three-hour maximum. Please follow all posted signs.

University Stadium:

Reserved parking is available in the University Stadium parking lot by purchasing a pass through the Golden Hawk website in advance of the season. On weekdays, parking permits on-campus are not required after 4:30 pm in all white permit parking areas and after 10:00 pm in all gold permit parking areas. There is no charge for campus parking on weekends, but please note that free parking is not permitted in any 'Reserved' parking sports at any time. Please note that no overnight weekend parking is permitted.

Refund Policy

Membership Refund

We will gladly honour facility, locker, and towel membership refund requests for medical reasons (documentation is needed), academic sabbaticals, or temporary employment leaves. Any membership refund amount(s) will be based on the time of the granted refund request in regards to the membership in use (i.e. annual membership, term membership, monthly membership). If you require a facility, locker, or towel membership refund please contact our Coordinator of Facilities, Ryan Lannan ([email protected]).

The Coordinator: Facilities decision is final when determining whether or not a refund will be granted.*

Recreation Refund

For all Recreation Programs (dance, group exercise, martial arts, and climbing wall passes) the refund policy is as follows:

• A FULL refund will be issued if the program has NOT started.

• Within the first three weeks of programming, a $25 administration fee will be charged to all refunds.

• After the third week of programming NO refunds will be issued.

• There are NO refunds on Personal Training Sessions.

For all Intramural Programs and leagues the refund policy is as follows:

• A FULL refund will be issued BEFORE the league starts.

• Once the league starts NO refunds will be issued. For all Lessons, Courses & Clinics the refund policy is as follows:

• They require 72 hours notice to receive a FULL REFUND.

• A $25 Administration fee will be applied if it is within 72 hours of the program.

• Once the Lesson, Course or Clinic has started NO REFUNDS will be issued.

Membership Card Replacement

If you were to lose your facility membership card, a fee of $20 is required to replace any lost cards. A new membership card can be issued from the Hawk Desk within the Laurier Athletic Complex. Students who lose their Laurier OneCard must obtain a new one from the OneCard Office located in the Fred Nichols Campus Centre.

Changes to your Membership

If you need to make any changes to your membership (ie. address or telephone number) please come in and see our Hawk Desk staff in the Laurier Athletic Complex so they can update your member profile.

Lost and Found

All items located at Athletic Complex, Alumni Field & University Stadium that are deemed valuable (i.e. wallets, glasses, credit cards, Ipods, ID's, jewelry, etc.) will immediately be taken to Wilfrid Laurier

University Special Constables Service Office. These items will not be kept at the Athletic Complex, Alumni Field or University Stadium. If you have lost a valuable item you can visit the Special Constable Office located across from the Dining Hall or by contacting them at 519-884-0710 ext. 3333.

All other items (i.e. Clothing, water bottles, and shoes) will be kept at the Athletic Complex or Stadium for a maximum of 1 week. At the end of each week all lost and found items are removed from both facilities and are no longer retrievable by the department of Athletics & Recreation. These items are donated to a local shelter in the Kitchener/Waterloo Community. Wilfrid Laurier Athletics & Recreation is not responsible for any lost and found items that are left in our facilities. Refunds will not be granted for any items.

Emergencies and First Aid

All Athletic Complex staff are First Aid and CPR-certified and are able to respond to any and all injuries at the Athletic Complex or on Alumni Field. If you or any member of your group is injured or has a medical-related problem, please contact the Hawk Desk at the entrance to the Athletic Complex. From there, staff can dispatch Emergency Medical Services if required. If the Athletic Complex is not open or staff cannot be accessed, users can use the Emergency Pull Station at the North-West corner of Alumni Field to reach Campus Safety and Security.

Dress Code

Athletic Complex: Shoes must always be worn while in the Athletic Complex. This includes time spent in building after using the pool or moving from the pool to another location.

Fitness Centre: Proper athletic attire (running shoes, athletic shorts/pants and shirt) is to be worn while in the Fitness Centre.

Gymnasium: Indoor running shoes much always be worn while in the gymnasium. Open-toed or outdoor shoes are not permitted.

Children

Children of all ages are welcome in the Athletic Complex, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed within the Fitness Centre, while children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

Wireless

Wireless is available throughout the building to students who have a valid login. Login information cannot be given out to those who do not have one.

At the Laurier Athletic Complex we take Cash, OneCard, Debit/Interact, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.
