Institute for Sustainable Practices (ISP), Energy Management
Program, Building Controls Technician Option: Downtown
Campus Building Controls Lab Equipment
Summary:
The Lane Community College Energy Management Program’’s Industry Advisory Committee has recommended that the Energy Program add to its portfolio of program options, a Building Controls Technician option which includes five new courses. They are Direct Digital Controls (DDC) 1 and 2, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Controls, HVAC Controls Troubleshooting, and Lighting System Controls. As with any new program or in this case new option, curriculum development and equipment are required to support instruction. This initiative is a request for new
equipment that will compliment building controls training equipment already donated by a Program Industry Advisory committee member.

Questions and Answers
How is the initiative linked to the Unit Plans most recently submitted? 1. How does it continue the achievement of those goals?
2. If this is a continuation of an initiative started last year, make sure that relationship is clear.
How is this initiative linked to the efficiencies and productivities plans you had last year?

Because the Energy Management Program: Building Controls Technician Option is a Career/Technical Education program, our measure of success is student employment. Industry Advisory Team has recommended the Controls Technician Option for our program because of the vast number of employment opportunities that currently exist and will far into the future

Funding Request: Carl Perkins
Is this a Career & Technical Education program approved by the state and offered through Lane for credit?
Yes
If not a Career & Technical Education program, does your request provide considerable support for students enrolled in these programs?
No
Do you have an advisory committee that meets 2-3 times per year?
Yes
If request is for personnel, will funds be used to replace an existing position? How will funding this initiative increase or sustain the academic achievement and technical skills attainment (GPA of 2.0 or better) of Career and Technical
Education students?
This initiative will allow the Building Controls Technician Option students to study in a state-of-the-art building control system’’s laboratory. Lab activities are a key
component of all five of the controls program courses, including Direct Digital Controls 1, Direct Digital Controls 2, Commercial HVAC Controls, and HVAC Troubleshooting and Re-tuning, and Lighting Controls.
How will funding this initiative increase or sustain the number of CTE students that graduate or receive a one year certificate from Lane and help prepare the students for employment?
There are few Building Controls Technician degree programs that connect building controls
Management Program is able to make the connection because of our vast experience in the
commercial building energy efficiency sector. We will train energy efficiency students in building control system technology such that they will make the connection between energy
efficiency and building controls. The equipment requested will support hands-on lab instruction.
