If everything is repeating

The problem of automation of the

photo-graphic process - photography as a mass

production with a reflection on the

ap-propriation of objects by reference to the

methods of representation. On the

exhibi-tion are shown the outer layers of objects

“pulled” from the surface by an automated

camera. And printed in 3D a figure of the

monument, using the same application,

the artist photographed again and prints

again. He repeats this process several

times. Each new object loses focus

- details are disappearing and elude.

If everything is repeating, installation, 3D prints, auto-generated mapped textures, 2014

Dolna gallery- sketch for a project

In one simple treatment succeeded to

transform the interior of the gallery in

a three-dimensional drawing.

Dobisze-wski marked with a thick black line

all the corners altering perceptions of

space. Architectural forms have become

more painting. White exhibition halls

began to resemble a drawing, grew

softer as paper mock-up.

Fixation

The basis for the Fixation exhibition

was transfer of the technique used in

marketing research (*eye-tracking)

into the sphere of art. The artist asked

to participate in the research a group of

dozens of people, who were presented

with the visual stimuli in the form of

films, photographs and illustrations.

The aim of the project was to show

other possibilities to decipher the

reality, to expand the consciousness

of perception of the recipients and to

Temporary internet photos

When browsing any website all images are

stored in memory of computer and

automa-tically in real time printed, and then hung

on the wall. When you browse the internet

a spectator unknowingly becomes a kind of

wizard of random photographs, it becomes

co-creator of the exhibition.

Temporary internet files

Surfing around the World Wide Web,

we unknowingly gather images which

document that journey. They are stored

in an album of our virtual travels – to

the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Photographs, graphics, animations

seem to be postcards, because we’re

not their authors, we just unknowingly

collect them. Just like we don’t know

the person who made that postcard,

we’re unable to determine whether

a given situation took place in reality

or it is a creation of a fictitious world.

During the virtual travels we don’t

search in the images we watch for

the signs of the bygone, we just

find meanings and symbols –

time and place go into oblivion.

Movemental

Objects in photographed rooms are dislocated, the space is blown and

fragmented. Making an effort is required to rearrange the image and put

it back together into a whole. Imagined movements which we make in our

minds reflect our knowledge of the world and result from our experience

in perceiving images. The level of dislocation of objects in a photograph

can vary, and still it becomes clear that gradually, with practice we gain

great ability in rearranging images in our heads. Thus a photograph as

a complete image will exist only in our minds, photographic reality

will turn out to be virtual...

Hidden trips

Collection of undeveloped films,

ex-posed during trips in years 2006-2009.

Images recorded on films potentially

exist, it seems they can be displayed.

However they are not to be seen.

We can only listen to the sounds the

artist recorded during his trips. Based on

these sounds only we have to create our

own image of locations, events, views

and people. In our memories different

sensual stimuli are mixed creating

a general impression.

Memorabilia

The viewer entering the exhibition

space is suddenly attacked by a series

of images that are foreign to him,

that are coming from someone else’s

world, that are a reflection, a

meta-phorical flashback of the memory

of the author, who invades our mind

with his past. The flash brings out

the black out of the white and in

a short second the image is restored

in the form of an afterimage.

Timing

The progress bar is a visual

signal-ling device reflecting the progress

of work performed by a machine. In

fact, we do not know what is actually

happening, what activities have been

performed and what remains to be

done. We often anxiously observe

such progress bars on our screens

rushing it “go on!”; unfortunately we

are unable to speed the process up.

We have no influence on the figures.

Video amusingly draws our attention

to what technology hides from us, at

the same time indicating the

limita-tions of a stable picture frame. We

will not see nor learn about anything

more than what we see.

Re-medium

Tomasz Dobiszewski in his work “Re-medium” creates a camera out of a pill pack.

The space in which the image appears is where the pill lay just a moment ago.

The image might be then a vision after the pill has been taken, or this vision

might be the consequence of taking the image. The author, for whom, pinhole

photography has always been an uncovering medium, is trying to convince us,

by putting instructions next to the photographs of how to use them in the shape

of an informative brochure added to the medicine, that during the times of

“visual pauperisation” the images will still appear, even if only as placebo.

Pinocycle

The author travels around the city

with a camera installed on the

bicycle frame. This way of shooting

from the top takes some

unpredict-able effect. On the photographs we

see the vehicle frame, blurry hands

of the artist, a curved line of the

ho-rizon and irregular streaks of light,

but in this case only the clear bike

is the subject of photos?

Tomasz Dobiszewski (born in 1977) in 2005 graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, from the Intermedia Photography Department directed by Krzysztof J. Baranowski and Stefan Wojnecki. He lives and works in Wrocław, Poland.

He formulates his expressions using photography, video and multimedia installations. The area of interest for the artist is time and space, limitations of the viewer’s perception, illusion and problems of participations. In works which are evidence of artistic taming of the media he does not stop at purely conceptual cognitive strategies but enriches the discourse by non-intellectual elements such as sensual impressions or intuitive cognition. He connects messages readable for different human senses and by experimenting with the physiology of seeing or hearing; on the one hand aims at fuller, more complete transfer, on the other mischievously or ironically deprives viewers of the possibility to get to know the essence of the work.

Works in the The Bunkier Sztuki Collection in Krakow (PL), Palace of the Governors Photo Archives at the New Mexico History Museum (USA), collection of the Gallery of Modern Art of Leon Wyczółkowski’s Museum (PL) and in priva-te collections.
