Meridian Community College - Monday Morning

College Connect offers

opportunities for the

college bound student

Russell Christian Academy senior Madison Godfrey is planning to pursue

a career in veterinary science. “It’s something I’ve been interested in since

I was little,” the 18-year-old said.

So on Tuesday, Godfrey and her mom Louanne, came to Meridian

Community College’s Tommy E. Dulaney Center to gain information on

how she could begin working on her dreams. They and other students

and parents did just that by attended the fourth annual College Connect

event hosted by MCC and Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus.

At College Connect, participants learned about the admission process at

both institutions, completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

(FAFSA) with a financial aid specialist; discussed financial aid options,

completed an MCC Tuition Guarantee contract, applied for scholarships

at MCC and learned about transfer scholarships at MSU-Meridian.

Godfrey came to College Connection on the suggestion of her mom and

school counselor. Garnering knowledge about financial opportunities

was a priority. “I don’t want her to start her college career in debt,” mom

Louanne said. “I’m glad we came,” she added.

“The admission process and the financial aspects of going to college is

intimidating to many people,” said Nedra Bradley, director of financial aid

at MCC. “It can be so scary that many people won’t even bother with

advancing their education. But in reality, the process is very simple.”

Soraya Welden, dean

of Student Services

for MCC, said the

partnership with

MSU-Meridian for College

Connect makes sense.

“This cooperation

between the two

learning institutions

provides a wide

variety of information that can answer many, if not all the questions an

incoming student may have,” Welden said. Described as a full-service

event, participants could apply for state and federal tuition aid as well as

scholarships during College Connect.

Candy Adams, the recruiting coordinator for MSU-Meridian, said some

may think the two campuses compete for the same students but that

really isn’t the case.

“MCC is a community college and we deal with transfer students so the

partnership is a natural one,” Adams said. “We complement each other

for the welfare of the student. They can stay in Meridian and get a

four-year bachelors degree without leaving home.”

Cooking up success

MCC, MUW sign Culinary Arts MOU

Meridian Community College and Mississippi

University for Women announced a new partnership

that will allow culinary arts students to receive a

bachelor’s degree from The W.

The enhanced Two Plus Two program will provide

a seamless transition for MCC associate degree

graduates in Culinary Arts technology to finish their

four-year degree at The W.

On Tuesday, March 31, MCC President Dr. Scott

Elliott and MUW Interim Provost and Vice President

Dr. Thomas Richardson signed the Memorandum of

Agreement (MOA) during a ceremony in the MCC

Culinary Arts and Hotel and Restaurant Management

Technology Program building located in Meridian’s

College Park Shopping Center.

MCC’s Culinary Arts Technology Program provide

a solid foundation in the methods and science of

cooking through exposure to classical, American,

and international cuisine as well as the art of

baking and pastries. Special emphasis is placed on

culinary tools, equipment, techniques, and specialty

ingredients. The heart of the Culinary Arts Technology

program is hands-on lab instruction in a commercial

kitchen.

“We are so proud to be signing this agreement,” said

Elliott. Anytime you can create new opportunities for

students … that’s what we’re all about.”

Richardson agreed. “We are excited to sign this

agreement and work with Meridian Community

College in our culinary program,” he said. “We know

your students will come prepared and we look forward

to a long, very happy successful arrangement that

will serve your students for their futures.”

Established in 1996, The W’s Culinary Arts Institute

offers one of the nation’s first four-year baccalaureate

degree programs in culinary arts. It is a premier

national program that includes concentrations in

food journalism, food art, entrepreneurship, nutrition

and wellness, and culinology.

Students entering the new program will earn a

bachelor’s degree in technology and professional

studies with a concentration in culinary arts. Career

options include positions as executive chefs, small

business owners, caterers, food stylists and food

photographers, among others.

“This is an exciting opportunity for MCC’s Hotel and

Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts students

to continue their education at the ‘W.’ The opportunity

for additional training is another pathway to success,”

said Dr. Richie McAlister, associate vice president for

workforce education. “MCC students are prepared for

additional studies at the ‘W’ and are well-grounded

in both hotel management and culinary principles,”

McAlister said.

“MCC students often elect to complete double degree

majors in both Hotel and Restaurant Management

and Culinary Arts,” he added.

program contact An Howard Hill, MCC Culinary Arts

Program coordinator and instructor, at
