History of APU

Service. Leadership. Relevance in a global society. These values define our mission

at APU. Founded by a retired Marine Corps officer and instructor, our University System was designed to meet the educational needs of the military—a very mobile population with extended, irregular schedules and limited financial

resources. Over time, our program offerings have expanded, extending our outreach to professionals in all walks of life. We have grown by honoring the tenet that “we invest in each student, as an individual.” Our students quickly

discover a tight-knit community of learners— professors, staff, fellow students—and alumni who are committed to helping you continue your education

.

We hope you will join our

community of learners.

My investment. My degree.

I liked the fact that APU was a school with a solid reputation that was also affordable. I benefited from many of APU’s policies— especially transfer credits and the ability to cover most of my course fees using

tuition assistance.

I chose to invest in my education to develop myself as a premier information operations professional, specifically in the network warfare arena. My career has included service milestones at the Pentagon, tsunami relief, the Gulf War, and Kosovo operations. My master’s degree at APU helped me combine my experience and education into a complete package.

My degree merges my personal interests in homeland security with the best of my undergraduate knowledge in computer programming and engineering and my military experience in intelligence. My APU degree helped me earn my promotion to major and was an investment in my future career after the military. My goal is to eventually transition to the CIA or FBI.

I am a husband, father, and an Air Force officer.

I’m Barrington Barrett, and I’m a proud APU graduate.

and I didn’t have to break the bank to do it

Community of Learners

At APU, you’ll quickly see that we understand the importance of community to effective learning. Our student body is broad and diverse; your APU experience is designed to be flexible and engaging.

Many of our students tell us that their learning inside the classroom is greatly enriched by discussions with other students. This can be attributed to the high caliber of students at APU. There’s an online discussion board in each class, where your professor and classmates gather. Additionally, you can network with professors and students through social communities, student chapters of industry associations, and professional forums—as well as a very active alumni group of more than 27,000. More than 50% of undergraduate alumni return for a second degree at APUS.

Who is the typical student?

APU students are active, working adults often balancing family, school, and career. They range from a firefighter completing his degree in pursuit of his goal of becoming fire chief to a soccer mom studying alongside her husband—to show her kids the importance of education and make learning a “family affair.” We are proud to have a strong community of learners ranging from those early in their careers to those who are accomplished professionals and are looking to build upon their current skills.

What financing options are available

to me? Will I be able to afford this?

APU was founded with the mission of providing accessible and affordable, quality education. Our tuition is among the most competitive in the industry so that you can reach your education goals and balance your budget.

Our Financial Aid Office can help you identify financial aid for which you may be eligible, including Federal Student Aid as well as G.I. Bill ad other veteran’s education benefits. Additionally, we value the importance of a strong transfer credit program—allowing students to maximize their previous learning and minimize the time and financial investment required. We accept up to 46 semester hours of transfer credit toward your associate degree, 91 semester hours of transfer credit toward your bachelor’s degree, and up to 15 hours of transfer credit toward your master’s degree. On average, students at APU receive:

Academic Community

Is APU accredited? Can I get a quality

education here?

Absolutely. APU is part of American Public University System, which is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association (www.ncahlc.org, 312-263-0456). HLC is the accrediting body for some of the nation’s top universities. Many of our degree programs have further been awarded specialty industry recognition. Professors are experts in the subjects they teach and bring cutting edge applications into the classroom. Our professors are industry insiders that combine relevant theory with real-world experience. For example, Psychology Professor Dr. John D. Moore is the co-founder of a Chicago-based consulting firm, a respected health sciences and corporate wellness leader, sought-after public speaker, and noted author. He is also a licensed clinical professional counselor, board certified drug and alcohol counselor, and approved clinical supervisor. Dr. Moore joined us in 2002 and today he represents our more than 2,000 experienced faculty members who bring their passion and expertise into the classroom. In addition, we were the first entirely online university to receive the Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education, which is based on learning effectiveness, cost effectiveness and institutional commitment, access, faculty satisfaction, and student satisfaction. This international award is presented annually by the Sloan Consortium, the premier academic organization dedicated solely to online learning.

What is the online classroom like?

As a student, you will enter your individual classrooms from the campus homepage. There are no required login times; courses are asynchronous. This benefits all students by allowing for well thought out responses in the classroom and discussion board threads. Additionally, the professors take special efforts to engage their students. Find out firsthand what the experience is like by visiting our website for a classroom demo or by attending one of our admissions open house webinars offered on a regular basis.

What resources are available

to help students succeed?

Open 24/7, the online library is a cutting edge center containing contains millions of pages of books and scholarly articles licensed from the Deep Web and is tailored to the University’s programs. There is also a team of librarians to assist you.

Additionally, you will have an assigned student advisory team, a wealth of resources through APU’s Center for Teaching and Learning, tutoring services,* and access to a Financial Aid Help Desk.

*The Online Library automatically provides 5 hours of tutoring to you and an additional 5 hours are available by petitioning your Student Advisory team.
