Reverend Dr. Jesse T. Williams, Jr

. is the fourth,

distin-guished Senior Pastor of the prominent Convent Avenue

Bap-tist Church of Harlem in New York City, N.Y. Dr. Williams has

adopted the words of Paul in II Corinthians 5:18 as his

philoso-phy of ministry which states, “And all things are of God, who

has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and has given us

the ministry of reconciliation.” Dr. Williams’ ministry is guided

by this spiritual principle of reconciliation and is evidenced by

the fruits of his labor in preparation and service.

It is therefore not surprising and quite exciting to acknowledge and highlight that

under Dr. Williams’ pastoral leadership the Convent Avenue Church Family has

significantly increased in membership, worship attendance, and tithes and offering

commitments. Pastor Williams has instituted the partaking of Communion during

the First Sunday 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services as an addition to the

usual 5:00 p.m. Communion Celebration Service. He ordained a minister, licensed

three ministers and ordained four deacons. He initiated the hiring of an Executive

Minister and an Executive Assistant to the Senior Pastor, and facilitated the first

leadership retreat with the official boards. Pastor Williams has developed a new

church motto and initiated the development of the church logo that is part of the

revitalized Convent church website. Rev. Dr. Williams has also initiated the

re-structuring of the New Members Training Classes and Curriculum. As a visionary,

who understands the plethora of societal needs, Rev. Dr. Williams is constantly

seeking the face of God for wisdom, guidance, direction and discernment in

spirit-ually leading and effecting holistic change not only for the Convent Avenue

Church family but the Harlem Community at large.

Dr. Williams’ academic credentials include a Doctor of Ministry degree from the

Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves, Missouri (May, 1999); a Master of

Divinity degree from Eden Seminary (May, 1991); a Bachelor of Science in

Me-chanical Engineering from the University of Kansas (May, 1986); and a Bachelor of

Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas (May, 1986). In

June of 2005 Dr. Williams received a Certificate of Participation and gained special

training at Harvard University’s Divinity School Summer Leadership Institute in

Cambridge, MA.

Dr. Williams’ ministerial and community highlights are numerous. Reverend Dr.

Williams was born in Akron, Ohio and is happily married to the lovely Gelaine R.

Williams. They are the proud parents of one son, Jesse T. Williams, III.

Breakout Division A

Now, That's A Good Question Dr. Ronald Perry, Pastor,

Springfield Baptist Church, Beacon NY

This class will explore the power of asking questions. As a teacher, do you experience trying to engage Sunday School class members in discussion only to have them stare blankly at you in absolute silence? Learning always takes place at a higher level when the Sunday School class members are ac-tively engaged in the lesson and in discussion with one

an-other. Asking questions, rather than just sharing information, will help lead class members to discover for themselves what the text is saying and will lead to a more dynamic class. Asking good questions will not only lead the class members to learn new things, but live what they learn. This class will discuss and practice the types of questions that will aid in the journey of discovery for your class members: Icebreaker/ Launching questions, Observation/Informational questions, Interpretation questions, and Application questions.

Transforming Lives Through Effective Lesson Plan Rev. Christella Watts, Associate Minister,

Thessalonia Worship Center, Bronx NY

It is true that the way the Word of God is presented in the classroom has an immedi-ate impact on spiritual transformation. Those who teach the Word of God must not have as the ultimate goal teaching more Bible content that results in mere head knowledge. Instead, Scripture teaches that we must move God’s people from

Infor-mation to TransforInfor-mation. This class will focus upon how to write lesson plans that share the Good News so that teaching become transformational not just informational." Questions to ponder: Do we include transformation activities in our lessons, or are the transformational elements as an after-thought. Discover what is transformational teach-ing? Do you desire for your students to truly take Sunday School lessons to heart and into their daily life? Do you want to see changed lives, students who truly know and love God and who are being transformed by his love? A Christian educator’s goal is to have the class interact with God's truths in such a way that they realize that God is talking to them through Bible stories, shedding

How to Develop Spiritual Habits? Dr. Jesse Voyd Bottoms, Jr,

Beulah Baptist Church, Poughkeepsie, NY

What does it mean to say you belong to Jesus Christ? What does it mean to truly be a dis-ciple of Jesus Christ? The most practical and powerful way to get believers headed in the direction of spiritual maturity (becoming a disciple) is to help them establish habits in their lives that promote spiritual growth. As Christian Educators, we should take this goal very seriously. Sometimes these habits are called ‘spiritual

disciplines. So, we’re choosing to call these habits— habits that will help us to grow up spiritually, which scripture says should be all of our goals as disciples. This class will discuss these spiritual habits necessary on our spiritual journey to spiritual maturity.

Breakout Division B

A Remedy For Itching Ears:

Christian Doctrine Remixed for New Generation of Believer Dr. Jesse T. Williams, Pastor,

Convent Avenue Baptist Church, New York, NY

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but after their own lusts shall they to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (2 Tim. 4:3-4)

When we come across these words from the apostle Paul to Timothy, we tend to see this verse as a description of our day and age. As Paul reminds Timothy, don’t compromise in difficult times. We, too, must recognize that people will not want to hear sound doctrine; they just want things to tickle their ears. Do we adhere to that? No. We conclude that the Truth is all the more necessary in such times. As Christian Educators, we are compelled to know and teach the faith that is in line with Christian teachings. The doctrines like, sin, repentance, the Trinity, Salvation by grace alone, through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, and the deity of Jesus Christ must be our curriculum. The doctrine that we hold to be the foundation of our faith must not be downplayed or removed altogether and replaced but become

(8)

the remedy for “itching ears”. This class will discuss what we believe and how we teach what we believe to the New Generation of Believers.

Are You A Disciple Making Teacher? Dr. Ronald Perry, Pastor,

Springfield Baptist Church, Beacon NY

This Class will discuss strategies on how to make disciples. As teachers, we recognize that making disciples starts with a thorough understanding of what a disciple is. In

this class, the nine-point outline, spelling out the word,

"DISCIPLES” will be explored what is the: Disciplined daily life; Intimate friendships; Self-esteem; Corporate worship; Intimate family life, Passion for God; Lay ministry; Evangelis-tic heart, Sacrificial giving.

The teacher that understands disciple making, keeps these quali-ties firmly in mind and says to themselves regularly, "This is the kind of person I am trying to create" will change lives. Are you out to cover the material or are you out to make disciples as de-fined according to the Word of God? This Class can help you help them become disciples of the Master.

It's Time to Rev Up for Vacation Bible School Dr. Edward O. Williamson, Pastor,

Bethel Baptist Church, White Plains, NY

It’s that time of year to plan for VBS. Will you be the Vacation Bible School Director? Will you work in VBS? Would like to explore ways to enrich the VBS experience? This class is for you. It is designed to teach the values and structure of the Vacation Bible School and provide instruction on how to plan, set up and conduct V BS. It will teach how to develop a program and provide curriculum materials and visual aids recommen-dations. As a Vacation Bible School Director, Teacher or Worker, you must think about the question: What are the things to consider in my Planning, Administering, and Eval-uating this year’s Vacation Bible School? This class will assist you in the process.

Don't Wait: You Can Start A New Class in The Sunday School Rev. Christella Watts, Associate Minister,

Thessalonia Worship Center, Bronx, NY

When should a Sunday School start a new class? Should it be done after the existing classes are full or should it be done intentionally as a growth strategy? Sunday Schools that are interested in being proactive instead of reactive should consider

Creative Bible Teaching: Tell Me A Story

Storytelling, an important tool for Christian Teachers Rev. Sara Streeter-McRae, Associate Minister, Beulah Baptist Church, Poughkeepsie, NY

This class will explore the techniques used by storytellers to engage their students. Story telling continues to be a teaching tool throughout our lives, yet all too often, if we are not teaching children, we don’t use it. Jesus, the Master Storyteller, used the familiar to explain the spiritual, forming images in the minds of people with His words. He used stories with individuals and with the multitude. The art of storytelling has the potential to engage and invite our students into The Story. As communicators in a culture saturated with storylines, we have the profound opportunity to invite our students into the masterful Story of God. There are a

(10)

many forms of stories such as Jesus’ stories, personal illustrations, life experiences of others, sections from books, short stories, parables, no matter what the form; story helps us participate in the reality of the Christian experience. The goals of this class are: to help teachers see the importance of using story with teens and adults, to encourage teachers to start a file of stories that can be used in their classes.

Motivating Your Sunday School to Grow Through Evaluation Rev. Eric Shaw, Pastor,

Bethel Baptist Church, Troy, NY

How Does Your Sunday School Really Measure Up? Evaluation is asking the ques-tion, “Is God well served by what we are doing?” Usually this is asked either in a formative or a summative way. The formative sees evaluation as integral to the pro-cess. However, summative sees it as independent from the process and determines how effective something has been after it has been completed. Do you analyze and interpret your attendance records, visitation reports, facts that your students and teachers could provide? Or Are you satisfied with “holding your ground”? Evalua-tion is an important tool in continually improving the work of the Sunday School. What do you need to do to take your Sunday School to the next level? This class will explore these questions and more as well as discuss evaluation techniques that can be used to accelerate your Christian education program.

This class is strongly recommended for singers, musi-cians and praise team members. This class will explore the use of music as an integral part of the
