Message from the President

Last month we had our Annual Executive Luncheon at

The Ledges; the turnout was amazing! Almost every member had representation and half of our member firms attended the meeting. EWI Corporate Board President, Ronwyn Anderson, and our Corporate Board Regional Liaison, Dianne Luckett, also attended.

Laura L. Huckabee-Jennings, President of Transcend spoke on the concept of saying “no”. She discussed that we need to spend our time on things that match our values, the things that are important during our current stage of life and say “no” to the things that take our time and our focus away from the important things. She also discussed how to focus our attention on the opportunities that align with our values. I believe that this program spoke to everyone in the room. In today’s fast paced society it is important to remember that it is not a bad thing to say “no” sometimes!

Ronwyn Anderson and Dianne Luckett both spoke to us about the value of EWI and where their passion for the organization comes from. It was great to hear all of the things they love about EWI and to see some of the things they have gained from EWI in action; like overcoming the fear of speaking in public to being able to speak to hundreds of EWI members at LCAM. Dianne and Ronwyn also spoke about the wonderful things offered to each member firm through the EWI Corporate office and website. I am frequently on the EWI website and have found great information (and

it’s not all just about EWI). I recently found an article about traits of outstanding leaders. It was a great, quick read. Here is the link -

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/29/what-leaders-do_n_5233634.html. I encourage you to take some time, explore and use the resources that your EWI membership makes available to you and your company. Read the article above, explore the website, sign up for the webinars and share it all with your co-workers and Executives. Use your EWI membership to the fullest!

September Program :

The Healthiest 20 Years by

Dawn Pumpelly

Dawn Pumpelly is the co-owner of The Commons, Huntsville’s new 55+ active adult community and Country Cottage assisted living community. Today, she focuses her passion and energy on introducing Huntsville to the concept and benefits of living an active adult lifestyle and the opportunity to live “your life, your way.” For the

previous 10 years, Dawn served as the Executive Vice President and Co-owner for Huntsville-based Cottage Senior Living, the management company for 10 assisted living communities in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Pumpelly grew up in the family business of serving seniors. At the age of 10, Dawn began working in her parents’ retirement communities, answering phones, working in the office and spending time with the residents. Fresh out of college, she joined the fledgling Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) where she helped develop many of the key standards and concepts of care that we now know today as assisted living.

Prior to rejoining her family’s senior living business in 2003, Dawn spent several years working in sales and marketing with BellSouth and IDC Technology Research. In addition, immediately prior to her return, she gained invaluable hands-on experience working with Sunrise Senior Living, one of the nation’s largest assisted living providers.

A 1994 magna cum laude graduate of the University of the South-Sewanee, Pumpelly has served seven years as a boardmember and the last two as board chair of CASA of Madison County. She is one of the founders of Womenade of Madison County, an organization whose mission is to benefit and better the lives of local women in all stages of life. She is a member of the Huntsville Rotary Club, through which she also serves as a STRIVE mentor for a Lee high school student. Dawn has volunteered her time for the Alzheimer’s Association, Habitat for Humanity, the Avon Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk, and has served as a past board member and officer of the Assisted Living Association of Alabama (ALAA.)

Dawn and her husband David have a son who attends third grade at Randolph. They enjoy family time, skiing,

swimming and travel.
