Schiphol Group is the owner of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in The Netherlands. In 2006, Schipholcel-ebrated its 90th birthday of this airport, one of the first of its kind in Europe. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol not only takes pride in its history, but its development over time reflects an ambition to be and remain the best in class. With 46 million passengers and 1, 5 million tonnes of cargo in 2006, it is current-ly the fourth largest airport in the world measured by passenger volume and third by cargo volume. Due to its successful cooperation with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, ever since its start as a single airstrip in the Dutch polder landscape below sea level, its innovative designs and concepts, its customer oriented focus and hosting a significant worldwide network for the airlines, Schiphol has become one of the principal hubs in Europe with Air France/KLM as its hub-carrier.
The International Institute of Air and Space Law of Leiden University was founded in 1986 and is regard-ed as one of the leading international academic research and teaching institutes in the world, specializing in legal and policy issues regarding aviation and space activities in the broadest sense of the word. The Institute and the Schiphol Group have cooperated over the years frequent in areas of mutual interest. The Institute has appreciated the initiative of the Corporate Legal Services Department to organize this con-ference and to pool resources with a view to make this event a successful moment of reflection and exchange of both scientific and practical views and opinions.
Looking back on 90 years of history, the challenge of this conference is to look ahead and to anticipate new developments that will affect airport operators generally and the Schiphol Group specifically. Aviation is becoming a more transparent business, moving away from national government protection. Global developments, such as airline consolidation and alliances, have been debated in numerous publi-cations and conferences. However, airports are also challenged to play their role in a new context. They have to re-assess their position as an operator and service provider. Airport business is still, and may be for a long time, managed in many aspects in a regulated environment. But times are moving ahead. Government, customer and more generally stakeholder expectations are changing. Anticipating these challenges, this conference discusses global, European and national trends affecting the position of air-ports and Schiphol in particular from a regulatory point of view.
Conference attendees will be offered the more high level strategy and business focus in the morning pro-gramme, whilst the parallel working sessions in the afternoon will contribute and nourish the legal spe-cialists on topics of high relevance for the day to day operation of the airport business.
