MERIDIAN:

Railroads, Music and

Flying Horses

The rich history and interesting culture of

Meridian will be on display when we take a day

trip to the hub-city of east Mississippi. Ceded to the

U.S. in 1830 by the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek,

Meridian soon grew into a prosperous railroad town.

Its strategic location, at the junction of the Mobile and

Ohio Railroad and the

Southern Railway,

made it a target for

the destructive army

of General William T.

Sherman. After his

troops pillaged and

razed the town, Sherman

is blithely quoted as

saying, “Meridian no longer exists.” Despite this

setback, however, Meridian experienced an economic

resurgence and

became the largest

city in Mississippi

until Jackson’s

population passed

it sometime around

1930. Our visit will

include a step-on

EUTAW, ALABAMA

PILGRIMAGE

The majestic homes and colorful history of Eutaw

can be traced directly to its location on Alabama’s

Black Belt Prairie between the Black Warrior and

Tombigbee Rivers. The dark rich soil of the prairie

grew cotton in abundance, and the rivers provided

a way to transport it to Mobile to be shipped out to

textile mills in the northeast. Money flowed into the

small community and financed the building of grand

homes that

still stand as

the wealth

the owners.

rivers played

interesting

part in the

of Eutaw. As Union troops marched into central

that met homes in Tuscaloosa. Our visit will include

homes and churches.

Sent to England prior to the outbreak of WWII to study British intelligence agencies, Mr. Clegg coordinated the hunt for atom bomb spy Harry Gold. “Loaned

out” to serve as chief of staff for the Appropriations Committee

of the U.S. House of Representatives to make a study on the
