• Vocational Schools
reporting to the Federal Department for Vocational Education and Technology (BBT) Description With the training regulations of the profession concerned, the syllabus for the vocational
schooling is also issued by the BBT.
The timetable defines which subjects are to be studied in which years of the
apprenticeship and how many days of school per week the vocational schooling takes up.
In trades and industrial professions, the subjects are classified into three main groups: vocational teaching, general education, and physical education and sports. The learning objectives for each subject is laid down in the syllabus.
In the general education classes, the material taught serves to underpin the
development of the personality. Knowledge and understanding in the areas of society, economics and law foster maturity and the formation of opinions. The vocational teaching focuses in particular on the theoretical part of the profession being learned. In commercial professions, the syllabus contains four main groups: commerce, languages, office communications, and physical education and sports.
The syllabuses are also binding for the vocational schools. They are periodically adapted to changing circumstances in conjunction with the professional associations.

e-mail: [email protected]Entrance Qualification for higher education
[BERUFSMATURITÄT]Description Those who successfully complete an apprenticeship can pursue a course leading to entrance qualification for higher education [Berufsmaturität]. This is a
federally recognized qualification which not only opens the way to Swiss and in some cases to European higher education colleges (engineering colleges, higher schools for economics and business administration, etc.). It also provides a good basis for further education courses leading to federally recognized proficiency certificates and diplomas. There are four types of Berufsmaturität
which can be taken at the various vocational schools: – Commercial
The conditions for entry to a Berufsmaturität school (BMS) is a concluded contract for an apprenticeship and the passing of an entrance examination. The level of examination corresponds to the last secondary school class. However, anyone who satisfies the conditions for acceptance to a grammar school / high school [Gymnasium] can enter the BMS without taking an examination. For challenging professional careers, the
Progymnasium is an ideal prerequisite for successful completion of the BMS. Teaching at the Berufsmaturität school is geared to the acquisition of key qualifications. The school assumes a strong sense of responsibility and a high degree of self-reliance on the part of students, and attaches great importance to their personality development. The objectives are met through various forms of learning. Depending on the organization of the
Berufsmaturität school, BMS teaching is given in combination with compulsory classes over 6 or 7 semesters.
The BMS is a school where progression is based on achievements. At the end of each semester, a decision is taken on the basis of the report whether the student should progress to the next semester. Federal Berufsmaturität training is offered at the vocational schools of trade and industry in Liestal and Muttenz, the vocational school and training centre of Novartis, and at the commercial college of the KV Baselland in Liestal
