Course Syllabus:

MGT 527: The Strategic Management of Nonprofit Organizations is an Economics-based general management course. Using both lectures and cases, we explore a broad range of issues affecting the sector: Why do we have nonprofit organizations? What competitive advantages and disadvantages might this form have over the for profit or public firm and under what circumstances might this matter? How do we think about industry analysis and competitive advantage in a nonprofit setting? What special issues arise in the startup phase and later in the expansion/replication phases of a nonprofit? How do we think about pricing products, fund raising and managing an endowment? Are there special challenges in managing staff and the board? Finally, how do we think about mergers in the industry, and possibilities for innovation? I expect students to come to class prepared and to actively engage in the course, bringing their own experiences to the course material.

Assignments 1. Projects

At four points in the class, there will be an opportunity for students to lead the class, around structured topics. Assignments will be made after the first class, and I will attempt to

accommodate student preferences if articulated. Once assignments are made, students are free to exchange assignments as long as the TA is notified. If you have a clear project you would like to undertake as an alternative, please see me.

Assignment 1: Students are assigned to one of three industries: environmental advocacy, NY city hospitals and international relief and development. Two students will be given the task of doing an industry analysis of the industry, while the remaining two analyze competitive advantage of two different players of their choice.

Assignment 2: Students will be asked to share their entrepreneurial ideas with the class. Student social entrepreneurs are welcome to draft a partner to work with them. Absent sufficient supply of entrepreneurs students will be asked to analyze a business plan provided to them.

Assignment 3: Analyzing a Form 990: Students will be asked to choose and analyze a Form 990 for an organization. Students may nominate organizations of interest. Once chosen, three

students will be assigned to each organization and will be expected to report in turn on their independent findings, without repetition.

Assignment 4: Teams of students will be assigned to one of three sectors and asked to provide a template for an innovation in the sector. The three sectors are education, work force

development, and the performing arts. (choose) 2. Individual exercise

There are four individual exercises listed in the syllabus. Two must be handed in during the course of the class. Assignments must be emailed to me on the day prior to our class.

3. Case Write ups

Students are required to write up two cases of their own choosing during the semester. Questions will be provided.

Evaluation Algorithm: 25% class participation; 35% projects; 15% exercises; 25% case write ups.
