Share Class Details Investment Objective

The Fund aims to provide long-term total return (meaning capital growth and income) by investing in shares (or securities that are similar to shares) of Japanese companies. The companies issuing these shares will have a registered office or official stock-market listing in Japan, or carry out most of their business there.

Investment Strategy

In normal market conditions, at least 90% of the Fund’s assets are invested in such companies. The Fund uses a systematic investment approach and invests in companies according to their economic scale. This is measured as a company’s contribution to Gross National Product (“GNP”) and equal to the difference between a company’s outputs and inputs. There aren’t restrictions on the market values of the companies held in the Fund. The Fund can also invest up to 10% of its assets in Real Estate Investment Trusts and up to 10% of its assets in collective investment schemes. Please see the Prospectus for a full description of the investment objectives and derivative usage.

Monthly Performance Commentary

Market Review

Global equities rose in November as investors returned to risk assets following positive COVID-19 vaccine developments from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca. US stocks also gained in the month as the COVID-19 vaccine progress raised hopes of an economic recovery on the horizon. Joe Biden came out victorious in the US election, although investor expectations of a Democratic Senate were reduced, which unwound the risks related to Biden’s tax and regulatory agenda and fueled further risk-on sentiment. In Europe, stocks rallied on the back of positive COVID-19 vaccine developments. This was against the backdrop of ongoing challenges in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe and the continued deadlock between the UK and EU over a Brexit agreement as the end of the post-Brexit transition period nears. Asian stocks posted strong gains in the month as investor sentiment improved over COVID-19 vaccine developments and easing political uncertainty in the US. Optimism was further supported by a bout of upbeat economic data releases in Asia including strong monthly industrial profit growth in Mainland China and better-than-expected export data in South Korea.

Fund Commentary Overall Performance

On a sector basis, an overweight allocation to Materials coupled with an underweight exposure to Consumer Staples contributed to performance. Conversely, our overweight allocations to Utilities and Communication Services along with an underweight exposure to Health Care weighed on performance.

Stock Level

On a stock level basis, our overweight allocations to Nissan Motor Co Ltd (Consumer Discretionary) and Nippon Steel Corp (Materials) coupled with an underweight exposure to Nintendo Co Ltd (Communication Services) contributed to performance. Conversely, an overweight allocation to NTT Docomo Inc (Communication Services) coupled with our underweight exposures to M3 Inc (Health Care) and Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd (Health Care) weighed on performance.
