Social responsibility

Social commitment has to be embraced in full by both management and the workforce. The tasks involved in supporting organizations and activities of a social nature call for people with ideas and a keen sense of responsibility. At Wincor Nixdorf, staff members tend to approach management with specific projects. At the same time, however, management may provide fresh impetus in response to key issues.

Wincor Nixdorf operates in more than 130 countries worldwide. In many of them, the company has been firmly established in business and social circles for decades as an employer, client, taxpayer, and contractor. Wincor Nixdorf takes its social responsibility toward local people very seriously. Therefore, specific projects are mainly set up in places where Wincor Nixdorf has sales or production bases.

In our capacity as an employer and a client, we make a committed contribution to the regions in which we operate. In this context, we play a part in enhancing competitiveness and in helping to overcome social, environmental, and education policy challenges. Our commitment takes account of the expectations of stakeholders in our corporate environment as well as the specific challenges and structures of a region.

Our products and social responsibility

Some of our products also help to promote social responsibility. For instance, we supply reverse vending machines with the help of which customers of retail companies can donate the money received for returned packaging to local

Recognizing the commitment shown by our employees

We encourage our employees to do voluntary work and get involved in socially beneficial activities. On September 5, 2015, to mark the International Day of Charity, we invited our employees all over the world to tell us about their involvement with charitable organizations. This selection, which we are publishing both within and outside the company, shows members of the Wincor Nixdorf family volunteering as a paramedic, helping out at an animal welfare association, and training young football players.

Contributing to local communities

The heads of subsidiaries decide independently on the level of commitment in countries where Wincor is represented through its own sales companies. Strengthening integration within the local community remains the central principle. A prime example of our commitment in this area is the "Wincor in the Community" initiative coordinated by Wincor Nixdorf UK. Our UK-based enterprise supports staff members' voluntary activities by offering them one day of paid leave per fiscal year. To qualify for this, the staff member in question has to team up with at least two other Wincor Nixdorf colleagues and take on charitable work within the local community.

Wincor Nixdorf companies and their employees are actively involved in their local communities all over the world. The nature of this commitment and the projects supported by the company depend on the local situation.

We have put together a few examples that highlight how our employees in different parts of the world contributed to their local communities in the period covered by this Sustainability Report.

Wincor Nixdorf - taking positive action to improve communities

On September 18, 2015, as part of its program of social involvement, Wincor Nixdorf Indonesia organized a charitable event under the slogan "Let’s Share Our Love with Everyone." Local employees chose to support the Yayasan Sayap Ibu orphanage for disabled children in Bintaro, Tangerang, Indonesia. The orphanage aims to give the children a happy and independent life. As well as their general upbringing and education, it cares for their physical, emotional, and social welfare.

To begin with, Wincor Nixdorf Indonesia contacted the orphanage to find out what they needed most urgently. Between September 1 and 16, 2015, e-mails were sent out and posters displayed to draw the attention of employees at our Jakarta office to the campaign. The entire local workforce got involved and the resulting funds were used to buy urgently needed items such as baby food, care products, medicine, and diapers. On September 18, 2015, a group of employees visited the orphanage to spend the day with the children and present the donated items.

During the period covered by this Sustainability Report, one of the most high-profile issues was the refugee crisis, to which many Germans responded with offers of help. Large numbers of volunteers have provided important and often crucial support to help deal with the influx. Employees at Wincor Nixdorf's base in Paderborn collected donations of useful items to be passed on to the local branch of the Malteser Hilfsdienst

Energetic support for local charity

On December 1 and 4, 2014, two groups of employees visited the charity First Days, which is based near Wincor Nixdorf's offices in Bracknell, Greater London. First Days collects used baby clothes, toys, and furniture and distributes them to needy people in the local community. Altogether 17 employees at Wincor Nixdorf UK took part in the campaign, contributing their own time and a lot of energy over two days to support First Days. Banking team takes part in National Volunteering Day

On May 15, 2015, a group of volunteers from our Banking and Banking Service team took part in the UK's National Volunteering Day to support the conservation charity Friends of Lavell’s Lake. The local charity carries out conservation work in the Wokingham area, home to Wincor Nixdorf's UK subsidiary. Fourteen employees volunteered to spend the day constructing a birdwatching hide. Although the conservation group had been planning to build the hide for the last two years, it did not have the necessary funds and was therefore very grateful for the support.

The Noble Box project provides direct help for needy families throughout Poland during the Christmas period. The idea is for a group of people to meet, identify a family experiencing hardship, and organize a collection of items that the family urgently needs. Employees at our office in Katowice launched a Noble Box appeal in November 2014.
