Carolyn Y. Woo, Ph.D.

Commencement Speaker

Doctor of Humane Letters

Dr. Woo has served as president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services since 2012 following a distinguished career in higher education. CRS advances Catholic social teaching by carrying out the human development mission of the United States Catholic Church under the auspices of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The organization has a presence in more than 90 countries and is committed to helping 100 million people in need. Prior to joining CRS, Dr. Woo served as dean of the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business, which has been ranked as the number one business school in the nation, and as associate executive vice president for academic affairs at Purdue University.

Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Woo immigrated to the United States to attend Purdue, where she earned bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees. She has been recognized by the Academy of Management with a Best Paper Award; selected as a 40 Young Leaders of American Academe by Change magazine; and featured in Foreign Policy as one of the "500 Most Powerful People on the Planet"—one of only 33 in the category of "A Force for Good." Dr. Woo was the first female dean to chair the accreditation body for business schools—the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business —and directed its Peace Through Commerce initiative. She also helped launch the Principles for Responsible Management Education for the United Nations Global Compact.

Dr. Woo participated in the 2014-15 President's Lecture Series at Assumption, during which she addressed the campus community on the intersection of God, neighbor and self in Matthew 25, and how love for God cannot be separately expressed from love for those placed in our care. Dr. Woo was instrumental in facilitating the College's academic partnership with CRS.

James J. O'Connell, M.D.

Doctor of Humane Letters

As the founding physician, and now president, of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, Dr. James O'Connell oversees an organization that serves more than 12,000 homeless individuals each year in two hospital-based clinics and in more than 70 shelters and outreach sites throughout Boston. Dr. O'Connell began this endeavor in 1985 when he helped to establish the nation's first medical respite program for the homeless.

The organization began with a staff of eight and now includes more than 400 individuals who provide an array of medical services to the homeless. Widely considered a visionary, Dr. O'Connell is the primary reason why Boston is an international model for how to provide health care to the homeless. He spent much of his career riding through the streets of Boston in a Pine Street Inn outreach van for two nights each week, providing food, blankets and health care to those with the most need. Dr. O'Connell graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1970 before going on to earn a master's degree in theology from Cambridge University. He graduated from Harvard Medical School then completed a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

In recognition of his work, in 2009 he was named in the inaugural recipient of the J.H. Kanter Prize for his tireless efforts and creativity in developing ways to eliminate health disparities and improve health care for the homeless in Boston. Last year, Dr. O'Connell published a book, Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor, which chronicles his 30 years of service in caring for the homeless.

Frederick L. B ayon, D.M.D. '65

Doctor of Humane Letters

Dr. Bayon served dutifully on the College's Board of Trustees for 31 years, 10 of those as chair, for which he earned the title chair emeritus. His tenure on the Board was preceded by several years as a member of the Alumni Association, including a two-year term as president. In 1990, he was awarded the Jack L. Bresciani '72 Outstanding Alumnus Award in recognition for his service to and support of the College. During his time as a trustee, Assumption completed two successful fundraising campaigns, including the $33 million Centennnial Campaign.

The owner of a private dental practice in Worcester, Dr. Bayonhas served onlocal, regional, statewide and national non-profit organizations in the dentistry profession. He has provided free dental services for Memorial Hospital s Dental Clinic and at other Worcester clinics. He has also served the community in a number of key leadership roles with organizations including: Council on Dental Education; Dental Health Week at Worcester Science Center, The Dental Staff, Oral Cancer Screening Clinic, Worcester District Dental Society and Worcester Memorial Hospital.

He holds a bachelor's degree in natural science from Assumption College and earned a doctor of medicine in dentistry from Tufts University. He and wife Isa G'66 have three children-Jennifer, Fred and Laura-four grandchildren, and reside in Worcester.

Michael P. Tsotsis '71

Doctor of Humane Letters

A member of the College's Board of Trustees for 21 years, Tsotsis retired from the Board in 2015 after achieving emeriti status. He chaired the Board's Institutional Advancement Committee for many years, overseeing a highly prosperous period of the College s history, which saw its endowment exceed $100 million for the first time.

He has generously supported the College and its students, including a scholarship in the name of his family that provides financial assistance to students with a demonstrated need. He is a benefactor of the College's Multi-Sport Stadium, the Brother Bobert

Francis Beaulac, A. A. Scholarship and the Richard & Janet Testa Science Center.

The president of Benefit Development Group, Inc., a Worcester-based business he founded in 1976 to provide employee benefit services to clients throughout the country, Tsotsis is also a generous friend to the Worcester community. He serves in leadership capacities with numerous not-for-profit organizations and businesses such as the AdCare Hospital; American Red Cross of Central Mass; Children's Friend; Commerce Bank & Trust; EcoTarium; Greater Worcester Community Foundation; The Nativity School of Worcester; St. Patrick Parish; United Way of Central Mass.; and the Worcester Regional Research Bureau.

For his service to others, Tsotsis's recognitions from community organizations include the Kennedy Ambassador Award from Children's Friend Inc.; the Outstanding Young Leaders of America Award; as well as numerous awards from the insurance industry. Tsotsis earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics and political science from Assumption. Residents of Rutland, he and wife Dorothy have three children—Andy 95, Diana and Laura 04 and two grandchildren.

The Assumption College Mace

The Assumption College mace, and its role at the head of the front of the academic procession, symbolizes the shared goals of the academic institution. I medieval times, the mace was recognized as a symbol of authority, and in the context of an academic community, it has often signified teaching authority.

At Assumption College, education promotes self-discovery, but the true discovery of self must first take into account one's own nature and purpose. The symbolism of the mace reflects the simple but essential elements that make for a full and responsible consideration of self, within the broader context in which there can be a full blossoming of the individual.

An education at Assumption nurtures the growth of several key virtues. These include: the Intellectual Virtues, which guide students to the truth; the Moral Virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and moderation) which enable a person to lead a good life; and, most important of all, the Theological Virtues (faith, hope and charity), which lead the Christian to ultimate happiness. The Latin lettering on the three bands of the sterling node states the thrust of these essential virtues: Intelligentia Adducitur Veritatem; Voluntas Adducitur Bonum; Cor Adducitur Amorem. The staff of the mace could be considered a lignum vitae (tree of life), from which the virtues spring. The three upper branches of ebony and gold represent the virtues and their impact upon everyone at the College, symbolized by the multifaceted fluorite stone.

At Assumption, it is the community's shared vision that fosters a full flowering of the individual. The three blossoms of gold from the blue fluorite represent the individual coming to full maturity in Christ, in accord with the College's motto: "Until Christ be formed in you."

The Assumption College Mace was conceived, designed, created and given as a gift to the College by Paul A. Cavanagh of Greenville, Rhode Island.

Academic Regalia

The academic garb worn at today's ceremony takes its inspiration from the 12th and 13th centuries when most stu dents and teachers were clerics and had taken at least minor holy orders. The assignment of colors to certain facul ties, a much later development, was standardized in the United States in the late 19th century. White was assigned to arts and letters; red, a traditional color of the Church, was assigned to theology; green, for herbs, went to medicine; purple, the color of emperors, went to law; and goldenyellow, standing for wealth and alchemy, went to the sciences. Because philosophy means the love and pursuit of wisdom, in the case of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), dark blue represents the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship in any field for which the degree is con ferred rather than in the discipline of philosophy alone.

Gowns vaiy by degree. The bachelor's gown has pointed sleeves and the master's gown has oblong sleeves, the rear of which are cut square and the front of which are cut in arcs. Both the bachelor's and master's gowns are untrimmed. The doctor's gown has bell-shaped sleeves and is faced down the front with black velvet. Three bars of velvet cross each sleeve. Often the bars are black, but they may also be in the color distinctive to the discipline in which the degree has been conferred.

In all cases, the exterior of the academic hood is black, and the interior is lined with the official color or colors of the institution that conferred the degree, in Assumption's case, blue. The bachelor's hood is three feet in length; the master's is three and one-half feet; and the doctor's is four feet. The doctor's hood alone has panels at the sides. The edges of the hoods are velvet, and are two inches, three inches and five inches for the bachelor s, master s and doc tor's degrees, respectively. The color of this trim is indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains.

The mortar board cap may be made of soft or hard material and, as its name suggests, symbolizes the role of learning in building individual and shared futures. The tassel is either black or the color appropriate to the subject, with the exception of the doctor's tassel, which may be gold.

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctors' gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors associated with different disciplines are as follows:

Agriculture

Arts, Letters and Humanities

Commerce, Accountancy and Business Economics Education Fine Arts Law Library Science Medicine Music Oratory Philosophy Physical Education Science Theology pink silver gray . dark blue sage green drab .... copper light blue golden scarlet brown purple lemon ..green maize white
