How would you like to team up with one of the most respected industry leaders on a project that is

both good for business but more importantly GREAT for society?

Each year, the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell Schools spends several months “FUNraising” for incredible non-profit

groups including Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation, Food4Africa, Fran Drescher's

Cancer Schmancer Foundation, and Morris Animal Foundation, represented by Betty White.

In 2012, the schools raised

$2.5 million, bringing their nine-year total to more than $8.5 million

. Rather than seeking huge corporate donations,

most of the money for FUNraising comes from grassroots events like cut-a-thons, hair shows, car washes, bake sales, and

“Casual for a Cause” days, with donations averaging $5 to $10.

Where does Supercuts come in?

Last year Supercuts salons in Southern California decided that FUNraising sounded like a great idea and their

combined

efforts, introduced by salon management but made possible by stylist enthusiasm, lead to an $18,000 donation to

the campaign and Supercuts became the first corporate entity outside of JPMS Schools to ever participate

! Paul

Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh publicly recognized Supercuts at the annual FUNraising Gala that

was co hosted by Marie Osmond and attended by Betty White, Fran Drescher, Kristin Bauer, Kathy Buckley, and Grammy

nominee Natasha Bedingfield.

What is the plan for 2013?

This year, it is your turn to get involved. We are hoping what was a modest contribution last year will turn out to be a much

larger and collaborative effort this year.

Last year Joel Conner, Chairman of the Board of Regis Corporation attended the

Gala and helped celebrate the incredible contributions made by JPMS Schools from across the United States.

Joel Conner

was so impressed with the spirit and enthusiasm of the campaign that he agreed, through the Regis Foundation, to

match the money raised by the #1 Paul Mitchell School in 2013, in Supercuts’ name

. That gives us an incredible

springboard to further strengthen the relationship between our companies.

Where do we start?

Here is an example of the FUNraising efforts that Sapphire Ventures’ Supercuts salons will be carrying out. Use these

suggestions as a template for your efforts, but do note that watching stylists use their creativity to bring philanthropy to the

forefront in our salons is part of the fun.

Monetary Incentives

$5 a day allows you to wear blue jeans as long as you still look professional

Paul Mitchell Schools Raise $2.5 Million for Nine Charities

Glittering with gorgeous gowns and glamorous hairdos, the legendary Beverly Hilton, home of the Golden Globe Awards, rolled out the red carpet on May 7, 2012, for the Paul Mitchell Schools’ ninth annual FUNraising Gala. The event celebrates students and staff from the nationwide network’s 100-plus cosmetology schools, who spend three months a year raising money for selected charities. Generating $5–10 at a time with grassroots activities like cut-a-thons, hair shows, car washes, and casual days, the schools topped the $2.5 million mark this year, bringing their nine-year total to more than $8.5 million. Hosted by Paul Mitchell

Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh and singer/ performer Marie Osmond, with Paul Mitchell Co-owners

John Paul DeJoria and

Angus Mitchell, this year’s Gala featured a galaxy of superstars representing their charities.

Along with the schools’ nonprofit Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation, this year’s partners included Betty White (Morris Animal Foundation), Marie Osmond (Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals), The Nanny and Happily Divorced star

Fran Drescher (Cancer Schmancer), comedian and motivational speaker

Kathy Buckley (No Limits), actress

Kristin Bauer (Best Friends Animal Society), and Paul Mitchell Chairman and Cofounder John Paul DeJoria

(Food 4 Africa). The Gary Sinise Foundation and Magic Johnson Foundation were also selected, with Gary Sinise recording a special video for the schools, and Magic Johnson paying a surprise visit to their two-day Las Vegas Caper event in February, where he thanked the audience of 2,500 students for their support. Even rapper and recording artist Snoop Dogg loaned his support to the campaign, recording a special message of encouragement for students and staff.

Throughout the evening, the Top 10 FUNraising schools were revealed and the winners of the “First 100” contest were acknowledged for being the first to raise $3,000 individually. One hundred Future Professionals and staff members won the opportunity to attend the FUNraising Gala plus a hands-on training the following day with leading artists and educators including Paul Mitchell co-owner and salon owner Angus Mitchell, NAHA winner Vivienne Mackinder, Paul Mitchell Artistic Director and Vice President of Education Stephanie Kocielski, school owner George Morales, and platform artist and educator Takashi Kitamura.

The first-ever Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation Compassionate Service Award was given to longtime volunteers John Turnage, Michaeline Re, Bill Waite, and Gail Fink. Citing their years of service, Winn said, “When we started the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation back in 2001 … we made the decision to run this foundation without spending any money. No rent. No salaries. No phone bill. Everything would need to be donated, including time, talents, and resources … But do not for one minute believe that the support and services we receive are not the very best, because they absolutely are … We work with the absolute best talents and professionals.”

“Not one celebrity was paid to be here,” Winn added, “including

Natasha Bedingfield.” The Grammy nominee performed at the Gala, courtesy of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “And, thanks to our sponsors and ticket sales, the Gala itself was a FUNraiser, generating an additional $33,739 for the charities.”

An unexpected $18,000 donation from Supercuts added even more to the total. “They weren’t part of our campaign, but they wanted to support us,” Winn said.

Top FUNraising Schools

Throughout the evening, Marie Osmond, Betty White,

Fran Drescher, Kathy Buckley, John Paul DeJoria, and

Winn Claybaugh announced the amounts raised by the top 10 schools (award style, of course … “May I have the envelope, please?”) When they heard that the school in the tenth spot raised over $50,000, the audience knew the grand total would be huge – and it was! As an emotional Winn Claybaugh announced the final number and revealed the giant check, the audience screamed, cheered, and leaped to their feet for a standing ovation.

Nearly every school exceeded their goal of $15,000 this year, and most surpassed their previous records. Congratulations to this year’s top 10:

Special Thanks

Paul Mitchell Schools have a radical, unique, and inspiring approach to raising money for charity. When they started the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation, its founders decided to run it without spending any money. No rent. No salaries. No phone bill. Everything would be donated, including time, talents, and resources. The foundation has stayed that way for over ten years, and to date, while some charitable foundations spend as much as 25% of their revenues for overhead, the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation has spent less than 4%. “We don’t employ college kids who are humbly trying to get their foot in the door,” Winn Claybaugh says. “We work with the absolute best talents and professionals to run our nonprofit organization. Our heartfelt thanks go to the brilliant and dedicated people who donated thousands of hours behind the scenes to prepare this year’s FUNraising launch, conference calls,

posters, flyers, Idea Book, support materials, Web site, and Gala celebration.”

An additional $100,000 will be donated to organizations that serve beauty industry-related causes. “I am so grateful for the vision and compassion of the leaders who teach ‘magnified giving’ that reaches beyond the local area and out into so many communities! As one who has received $195,000 to date from Paul Mitchell Schools, I am truly grateful. As a result I can concentrate my time and efforts in actually providing the services to thousands of poor and homeless who come to our walk-in salon, rather than going around begging for donations. Also, the money helps us to continue our voucher program that provides hair care for children and the elderly who cannot come to our salon.”

FUNraising Success Stories

With nine years of FUNraising experience, the 16,000 Future Professionals and staff members from Paul Mitchell Schools really know what they’re doing! Using their 2012 FUNraising Idea Book and their incomparable creativity, they came up with thousands of events to raise money and awareness for this year’s supported charities.

Within the first few weeks, 100 Future Professionals and school staff members earned their way to the FUNraising Gala by raising $3,000 each, quickly bringing the FUNraising total to over $300,000. Paul Mitchell Schools’ Advanced Academy educators and Success Coaches traveled to countless schools to present incredible classes, collectively raising $226,789. Makeup specialist Debra Dietrich

led the way, raising $90,148 by taking her “Trending Tour” hair and makeup class to 20 different schools during the three-month campaign.

Many schools held highly successful “ONE Events.” Similar to TV telethons, they involve Future Professionals and staff members tapping into their address books and social networks to ask family, friends, and associates to help them raise $1,000 in one hour. Last-minute ONE Events in the final days of the FUNraising campaign raised over $75,000, with some schools going way over their $1,000 goal. Paul Mitchell The School Atlanta raised $8,491 and The Temple, A Paul Mitchell Partner School raised $7,000 – in just one hour! This year’s top FUNraiser, Paul Mitchell The School Chicago, made it to first place by holding lots of successful events, including team competitions, bake sales, and their annual walk-a-thon. Chicago Future Professional and “First 100” winner Danny McEvoy said he was inspired by the connection to this year’s causes. After hearing fellow Future

Professionals describe their experiences with cancer, childhood illnesses, and other related issues, Danny said, “I could picture them in my head and it was one more person I wanted to fight for personally.”

(15)

Many school owners and directors went “above and beyond” to encourage their teams. Vanguard College of Cosmetology (Baton Rouge) Director Megan Babin attended the FUNraising Gala in a Swan Lake costume after promising to dress up if her school raised $40,000. JZ Trend Academy owners Jodi and Arnie Zahn sported freshly shaved heads because their school rose to the challenge and raised over $30,000. Other owners and staff members did everything from hosting surprise lunches and auctioning themselves off for a day to letting Future Professionals duct tape them to walls, throw pies in their faces, and lock them in “jail” until they raised bail for the cause.

All together, the hundreds of fashion shows for people and pets, prince and princess days, ONE Events, bowling parties, karaoke nights, bake sales, garage sales, cut-a-thons, casual days, lunch sales, holiday events, car washes, pet washes, and other fun ideas made this year’s FUNraising campaign the most successful yet!
