OzTREKK Information & Application Package

(2)

Basically, because of our own university experiences in Australia and

Canada. As international students, we struggled to find info about, and

anticipate, the “ins and outs” of both the universities and programs in which we were interested. Throughout the application, pre-departure and

orientation processes, it never ceased to amaze us how difficult it was

to obtain either “plain language” info or sound advice. It was this sense of bewilderment that led us to countless discussions of how applying and

preparing to study overseas could be less complicated. Those discussions led to OzTREKK.

“The services that OzTREKK provides

Canadian students choosing to study in

Australia are fantastic. They are a

one-stop shop and have developed knowledge

of the market through experience.

As an OzTREKK student you will feel

confident that your overseas study needs

and concerns are being understood by

professionals who have your best

interests at hand.”

The select Australian universities we work with pay us

because OzTREKK makes the application process easy and

efficient for you, and for the universities. They’ve chosen

us as their Canadian representative because they know

that we’re experts in matching what you need to what

they offer.

So the universities encourage you to apply through OzTREKK. This OzTREKK information package is just one example of the many kinds of information you can get only if you apply through OzTREKK.

How can OzTREKK offer free services?

Why?

As former international students, Beth and Matt know that every little bit of funding helps when you are studying. They each paid their own way to study overseas, and had to access loans and work part-time during their studies to make it happen.

Because we’ve been there, done that, we created the OzTREKK Scholarships Fund.

We hope that OzTREKK Scholarships help you in a small way, to further enjoy the experience of a lifetime that comes as an international student in Australia.

How much?

Each OzTREKK student who qualifies for an OzTREKK Scholarship will receive one $500 scholarship during the first year of study. The OzTREKK Scholarship will be paid

directly towards your Australian university tuition.

How do I qualify?

To obtain an OzTREKK Scholarship, you must:

1. submit your Australian university application directly to the OzTREKK office; and

2. accept your Australian university program offer through OzTREKK; and

3. commence your Australian university program during the 2011 or 2012 academic year.

That’s it?!

Yes! No essays, no reference letters, no additional applications to complete and no

fine print. It’s that easy.

When Beth and Matt started OzTREKK, one of their major goals was to

be able to provide scholarships to support OzTREKK students.

TROPICAL NORTHERN QUEENSLAND:

A NATURAL PLACE FOR STUDY

A WORLD-CLASS ENTERPRISE

James Cook University is one of

Queensland’s premier universities and Australia’s leading tropical

university. Offering excellence in teaching and research, the main campuses are located in Cairns and Townsville in northern Queensland, with additional campuses in Brisbane and Singapore and teaching sites in

Asia and the Pacific.

The university takes its name from the eighteenth-century British navigator and explorer Captain James Cook, whose epic voyages contributed to the world of Science. The University was proclaimed in Townsville on April 20, 1970, 200 years after Cook charted the eastern seaboard of Australia, including northern Queensland. With a diverse range of academic study areas available, JCU offers students

a quality learning experience in a unique location.

COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OPTIONS

JCU Undergraduate and

postgraduate courses span the Arts, Business, Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science, Information Technology, Science, Social Sciences, Tourism and Veterinary Science. JCU aims to give graduates the

qualifications and skills they need for

the global workforce. Local industries and professions contribute to course content, and many courses include work placement schemes.

SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT

JCU recognizes that knowledge has the power to change lives and strives to create a student-centred learning environment where students learn to take full advantage of their

university experience. With friendly campuses, smaller class sizes, accessible teaching staff, and excellent support services including study skills and student mentor programs, JCU students receive the personal attention they need to achieve their best.

TEACHING EXCELLENCE

JCU’s academics are highly qualified, win national teaching

awards and are world leaders in their

fields. Innovation in teaching styles

and technologies is fundamental to

JCU’s approach to teaching.

PERSONAL ATTENTION

JCU values its postgraduate students, who make up around 20 per cent of the student body. Lecturers and supervisors are easily accessible, and

form part of students’ professional

network.

About James Cook University

JCU’s vision is to be one of the world’s leading

research universities in the tropics. JCU is home to more than 20 specialist centres and institutes, and maintains island, rainforest and outback research stations. As a leading research university, JCU provides top facilities for teaching and learning. Much research focus is based on the industries and environments of northern Australia, including marine biology, tropical environment studies, earth sciences and geology, engineering, tropical health and tourism. JCU receives more than $27 million in research funding annually, and is a member of the alliance, Innovative Research Universities Australia.

LEADING RESEARCH

Significant for JCU

students in Australia is the

university’s unique natural

location. The coastal campus cities of 180,000 (Townsville) and 147,000 (Cairns) and the tropical North Queensland surroundings attract more than two million visitors each year who come to experience the Great Barrier Reef, the islands and

rainforests of the Wet Tropics - both World Heritage environments. Visitors and residents enjoy a range of leisure activities including diving on the reef, visiting the ancient rainforests and waterfalls in the many national parks, bushwalking, camping,

fishing and visiting historic

outback regions.

JCU’s Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences

JCU’s commitment to research

excellence is reflected in the

reputation of researchers in the faculty. Prominent areas of research include gender and IT issues in education, maritime archaeology, human perception, foster care, youth issues, and Australian and Indigenous Australian studies.

This strong research focus provides a stimulating atmosphere for students and encourages the development of

research and critical thinking skills, essential in any career.

The enthusiasm generated by researchers also creates a great teaching and learning environment enjoyed by both staff and students. While many programs offered by the faculty seek to engage students with issues relevant to life in tropical northern Australia and the

Asia-Pacific region, significant

consideration is also given to

important social, cultural and political issues in a wider global context.

The career options available to the

faculty’s graduates are as diverse as

the graduates themselves. Professional degrees in community welfare, education, psychology, and social work can lead to accreditation with relevant

professional bodies in Australia and in some overseas countries.

Become a Teacher

This program provides the perfect opportunity for graduates to qualify for a profession recognized

throughout Australia, in one year of full-time study. It is an intensive program meeting the requirements of the Queensland College of Teachers for registration as a teacher. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Ontario College of Teachers. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of achievement in their

undergraduate degree and be committed to undertaking continuous professional development throughout their teaching career.

Program Overview

James Cook University offers students

the flexibility to enter into one of

three different streams:

Graduate Diploma of Education

(Primary) - Townsville Campus

The Primary program focuses on Years 1 - 7 (children from ages six and 12), which is offered at the Townsville campus. As a teaching graduate you will be equipped to teach across the key learning curriculum areas in primary schools.

Graduate Diploma of Education (Years 1-9) - Cairns Campus

The 1-9 program will produce

teachers that are flexible and aware

of the key learning areas for Years One to Nine (children aged from 6 to 14). It helps to address the

shortage of teachers in specialist areas, such as maths and science, and also prepares graduates to teach in the middle school years (Years 6 to 14). This program is offered at the Cairns campus.

Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) - Townsville Campus

The Secondary program focuses on Years 8 - 12 (adolescents from ages 13 to 17). To prepare as a secondary teacher, students generally focus on two teaching areas. In

choosing their teaching areas, students need to consider combinations that are in demand in secondary schools and areas where they have completed

undergraduate study. At JCU, students select from the following secondary

school subjects: Arts, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Drama, English, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Languages other than English, Legal Studies, Marine Studies, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Sciences, Studies of Society and Envi-ronment, Technologies, Visual Arts.

Professional Experience

An integral part of becoming a teacher is gaining practical teaching experience in schools. There are a range of placements offered in public and private schools in the local area and region. Possibilities for

professional experience in remote areas also exist. Students are required to complete 55 days of professional experience in schools, plus an additional 20 days of community service education. Students completing the one-to-nine program in Cairns must do one of their school placements outside of Cairns. Students enrolled on the Townsville campus may be required to undertake at least one professional experience block out of Townsville. The Graduate Diploma in Education includes an integrated practical com-ponent – students spend two days per week for part of each semester and two three-week block periods in school settings to complete the required 55 days of professional experience.

The Graduate Diploma of Education program offered at James Cook University is

accredited by the Queensland College of Teachers. With these qualifications, students are also eligible to apply for teacher certification in Canada.

Teaching is a regulated profession in Canada. Each province and territory in Canada has

its own individual certification board and if you wish to teach in any one of these locations, you must apply to for certification though the specific provincial or

territorial certification board. This stands for all students, whether they have completed

their teacher education in Canada or abroad. Upon completion of a Teacher Education

program, you are not automatically certified to teach.

Each certification board has its own set of rules and regulations that you must meet in

order to practise as a teacher in that location. OzTREKK recommends that students look

into the requirements of the respective certification board to determine the

requirements for teachers trained outside of their province.

OzTREKK maintains a strong relationship with our universities, consulting them and working together with them to create Teacher Education programs that work for our

Canadian students and that meet the requirements of Canadian certification boards such

as the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).

Q. How competitive is this program?

A. The application process is based on rolling admissions, meaning applications are assessed as they are submitted. As long as an applicant meets the entry

requirements for the program, there is a strong chance they will be offered a place in the program.

There is capacity to accept many international students in the program. Because of this, applications are assessed as they are received and not in one main selection round, thus competition with other applicants is not a factor in the assessment process.

Q. Is there an application deadline for this program?

A. While there is no official application deadline for this program, it is strongly suggested you have your JCU application submitted by early November. From the time an application is submitted to the time a student is ready to fly out to Australia, there are many steps to be completed. For this reason, it is best to give

yourself as much time as possible to complete the application process.

Q. After completion of this program will I be eligible to teach in Canada?

A. Please see the previous page, under, Professional Accreditation.

Q. What are the different teaching degrees in Australia?

A. In Australia, Teacher Education programs have different titles than those

offered in Canada. Furthermore, some Australian universities offer different types

of Education programs than those offered in Canada. Below are the different types of programs students will come across when looking into their Australian Teacher Education program options.

The Graduate Diploma of Education and Postgraduate Diploma of Education

programs are basic, one-year teacher certification programs in Australia which

corresponds to the Bachelor of Education in Canada. After students complete this

program, they are eligible to apply for teacher certification.

The Master of Teaching and the Master of Educational Practice programs are also

teacher certification programs. These programs are essentially one-year

Graduate Diploma in Education programs with an extra semester or two of courses and practicum experience. These programs are designed for students who would

like to gain the qualifications to become teachers and who would like to further

their experience in Education. The Master of Teaching and Master of Educational Practice programs are not Masters programs in the traditional sense, and should not to be confused with a Master of Education program, which is a true Masters-level program. The Master of Education is a degree you can only undertake once

you have gained your teaching certificate, and is designed for teachers who would

like to specialize in the teaching profession.

Q. How different are the Teacher Education programs in Australia compared to those offered in Canada?

A. Teacher Education programs offered at our Australian universities are set up in a similar fashion to those offered in Canada, providing comparable course content

and practicum placement hours. Furthermore, Australia’s teacher certification

boards set a similar level of standards to those in Canada.

JCU’s Application for Admission to a

Postgraduate Coursework Degree

Helpful Hints to complete the JCU

Graduate Diploma of Education Application

Section 1: Personal Details

Please ensure that your name is written exactly as it appears on your Canadian passport.

Section 3: Proposed Postgraduate Coursework Program

The Graduate Diploma in Education is considered a “Graduate/Postgraduate Diploma” program.

Please check this box at the beginning of this section. You are able to apply for two program preferences in this

section. Only your first preference will be assessed and if you are not granted an offer into your first choice, the

university will automatically assess your application for your second choice.

If applying for the Secondary Stream, you will want to state the two teaching methods you wish to be approved

for. Although there is not a specific space to write them

on this application, feel free to write them in the line assigned for a “major”, or simply write them on a separate piece of paper. If your teaching methods are not stated somewhere in your application the university will

assess you for the teaching methods they deem fitting and

you will not necessarily be approved for your two preferred teaching methods.

Please make sure you check the correct campus for your program, as some programs are only offered at one campus:

• Graduate Diploma of Education Primary:

Townsville campus only

• Graduate Diploma of Education Secondary:

Townsville campus only

• Graduate Diploma in Education (1-9):

Cairns campus only

Please note that each of these programs are only

available in the February intake.

Section 5: Credit for Previous Studies

Because Teacher Education programs are at the postgraduate level, credit for previous studies is not awarded.

•There is no application fee for applying to James Cook

University via OzTREKK.

In order to access OzTREKK’s services, applicants must

submit their JCU applications directly to OzTREKK. OzTREKK will match up your application documents as

they arrive in our office. If your application is

incomplete, we will advise you which documents are outstanding. When your application is complete, OzTREKK will immediately submit it electronically to

JCU’s International Admissions Office. OzTREKK will

also notify you that your application has been submitted.

Most James Cook University Teacher Education applications are processed within four weeks of submission. OzTREKK will notify you directly of an application outcome. You can also check your admissions

status 24/7 on OzTREKK’s online Admissions and

If you receive an offer from James Cook University,

there is no specific lapse date to accept the offer.
