D

Too much work

D1a You’re going to read a newspaper article about stress at work. First answer these questions and then ask your partner.

Are you busy? Are you stressed?

Have you got too much work?

Have you got enough time for your hobbies?

D1b Read the article and find out what it says about the UK.

Not so cool Britannia

Too much work? Not enough time to relax? Are you stressed? You’re not alone! 77% of people in the UK are stressed at work. This is the shocking result of a new survey. People work too many hours and at weekends, too. Another problem, especially for women, is finding a balance between home and work. Many working women think they haven’t got enough time for their children. Their lives are too busy and the day isn’t long enough to do all the work. They are too tired in the evenings and have no time for their friends or hobbies.

D1c What do many women in the UK think? Look at the newspaper article

again and complete these sentences with “too” or “enough”.

1. They haven’t got _________time. 3. The day is not long _________. 2. Their lives are _________busy. 4. They feel _________tired.

D2a Listen to Dr Pat Callaghan on the radio programme “Health today”.

Dr Callaghan is the Director of the National Institute of Health. Complete the notes and write the examples in the table below.

Exploring learning

Companion S. 45 Im Abschnitt Your link to the Portfolio finden Sie Hinweise, wie Sie Ihren Lernfortschritt planen und durchdenken können.

„power“, „energy“, „trainer“.

You shouldn’t forget: life is not only worries. Find a balance in your life and start a hobby. Learn how to relax. Try yoga or tai chi.

c

No, this is not normal. A person needs about 8 hours a day of sleep. You should go to see a doctor.

Go green every day! White fruit and vegetables are good for your heart. Yellow/orange food reduces stress and they help you to see better. Red food gives you energy and power. So when you go shopping, don’t forget the “colours of the rainbow”.

Eat “colours”

Eat the “colours of the rainbow” for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eat fruit and vegetables five times a day. Eat “colours” and be healthy! Blue/purple fruit and vegetables are good for your memory. They can help you to learn better. Green food is good for your teeth.

1

I feel tired all the time. I’m 21 years old, a student of mathematics. I sleep more than 10 hours a day, but I’m still tired. Is this normal? What can I do?

2

My office is 15 minutes from the car park. But I don’t have the energy to walk to the office every morning. I smoke 40 cigarettes a day.

3

I’m 52 years old. I work 10 hours a day. I can’t sleep. When I go to bed, I worry about work, I worry about money, I worry about the children.

a

You smoke too many cigarettes a day. Stop smoking. It’s dangerous for your health. You should also do some sport.
