Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (MAAP Program)

Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (Traditional Program)

Description of Program

The Interdisciplinary Studies degree programs are designed specifically for students who have completed an Associate Degree in a technical or professional area at a community college or technical college that holds institutional accreditation by one of the major regional accrediting agencies and whose primary career focus is related to their associate degree area.

The Interdisciplinary Studies degree programs presume that students will transfer into Marian College their total Associate Degree program courses, usually consisting of 60-68 credits. Building on this professional/technical base, students choose courses that will complement their career path and help them achieve learning goals in the following areas: 1. the spiritual dimension of persons and the construction of a personal philosophy and professional ethic, 2. critical

thinking, 3. effective communication, 4. quantitative reasoning, 5. an understanding of the various methods of inquiry, 6. an understanding of biological and physical systems, 7. an appreciation of the diversity and commonality of both eastern and western cultures, 8. analysis of the

interrelationships among human beings and their social environments, and, 9. an understanding of the elements and methods of the arts. The Interdisciplinary Studies degree programs will include the following:

I. Associate Degree from an accredited institution: (60-68 credits)

Specific Associate degrees are approved for this program based on the degree’s inclusion of a substantial knowledge base that includes a theoretical foundation as well as critical analysis regarding the occupational focus. Only if 30 or more credits of the associate degree focuses on these foundational/conceptual elements is the associate degree accepted for transfer in totality. Students who have completed associate degrees with a substantial theoretical foundation will have achieved abstract and theoretical thinking skills (including analysis, synthesis and evaluation) required to be successful in 300 and 400 level college courses. Based on this criterion, the following associate degree programs will be accepted for transfer in totality and as the basis for the Interdisciplinary Studies degree program:

Relationship of Proposed Program to Marian Mission/Goals

These degree programs are consistent with Marian’s focus on the liberal arts, the

education of the whole person, and its serious commitment to the continuing education of adults on both professional and personal levels. They provide a broad-based, liberal arts program for students with a specific technical career orientation. Using Marian’s academic outcomes as the central organizational principle, the student creates a major that integrates courses from several disciplines. In this way, the Interdisciplinary Studies degree programs are consistent with the mission statement, “characterized by several unique factors: dialogue among the various disciplines, personal concern for individual students, the combination of excellent professional training with a quality liberal arts education…”(Academic Bulletin, 5).

Rational for FVTC class: Tracy,

Sheryl Ayala forwarded your email regarding the Fox Valley Electrical Engineering Technology program to me. I took the time to review the program using the criteria we used to accept the other programs from Fox Valley and the other Technical Colleges.

This associates degree does indeed meet our requirements! So please go ahead and let them know that we will indeed accept students with that degree. I will add that degree to our list. At some point each year we must take to CES all of the additional programs we

(14)

have reviewed and accepted so it would help if you and Carol would also keep track of additions and we can package them and take them all at once to Fox Valley! Thanks so much for following through on this! These are the kinds of programs and colleges we want to work with and continue to evaluate new programs with as the IDS major gets off the ground!

Again, thank you Tracy and Carol for all that you are doing! Blessings!
