”I am very proud to welcome you all to Trondheim and to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Even though we are far north, we are an integral part of the international academic community. We welcome many international students from different parts of the world. When students from different countries mix with each other, work, study and spend leisure time together, they are in a better position to understand those with other backgrounds. This makes life easier for us all, on our campus and in the world in general.

Good luck with your studies at NTNU and with your life as a student in Trondheim.”

Important information

Please read this programme carefully and take note of important appointments and dates. You should save the programme after the Orientation Week is over, as it also contains information about other meetings you should attend over the next couple of weeks.

Also read the Checklist - the brochure has essential information that will help you during your first weeks in Trondheim.

Electronic copies of the Checklist and Orientation Programme can be found at www.ntnu.edu/lifeandhousing/trondheim/new-student

Registration and fee

There is a NOK 300 fee to participate in the social part of the Orientation Week. The fee covers all provided meals, excursions and activities, entry tickets and lots of fun. Please note that the registration deadline is 29 July. Check www.ntnu.edu/lifeandhousing/trondheim/new-student to register. The information meetings, police appointments and health checks, are free of charge. You do not need to register for this part of the Orientation Week.

Show us your ribbon

During registration you will receive a ribbon if you have paid the fee to participate in the social part of the Orientation Week. This ribbon acts as proof of payment – and it is your entry ticket. You should therefore wear/bring the ribbon to all the social activities.

Activities that are part of the social programme are marked with ’ribbon’ throughout the programme. If you are in doubt about whether you can participate in an activity, ask a member of staff.

MATRICULATION CEREMONY

The Matriculation Ceremony is an enrolment ceremony for all new students at NTNU. The Ceremony consists of speeches and entertainment. While the majority of the speeches are in Norwegian, English subtitles will be provided on large screens.

After the Ceremony, the faculties will arrange welcome meetings for most new master’s degree students. This is often referred to as Matriculation Part 2. What to wear?

The Matriculation Ceremony is a celebratory event, so students are encouraged to dress up. However, as the Ceremony takes place outdoors, it is good idea to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Wearing comfortable shoes is also a good tip.

TRONDHEIM GAMES

After the pizza lunch, it is time to explore the city center of Trondheim. Form a group of 8-12 people, pick up the instructions – and then let the Games begin! This is a great opportunity to make new friends and to get to know the city.

Thursday 18 August

You must show your ribbon to participate in this activity.

The hiking trip is an ideal chance to discover the great outdoors Trondheim has to offer. You can select one of ten different trails/routes. All routes pass spectacular scenery, with views of lakes, forests and streams. Some routes are more challenging than others; it is very important that you pick a trail that is suited to your fitness level and equipment!

You must select a trail/route when you register online for the Orientation Programme. Buses have been ordered according to the number of students who have registered for a specific trail, so it will not be possible to switch groups once you have registered. Also note that you will have to get home on your own, either by bus or tram.

Safety

There are no dangerous animals in Norway, but please be aware of the following:

• Flått/Ticks: Tiny black/brown insects that bite and cling to your skin. Most ticks do not carry disease and most bites are harmless. But it is important to remove a tick as soon as possible if you find one.

• Huggorm/Viper: A snake that has a small amount of poison.

• Mushrooms in Norway can be poisonous. Do NOT eat mushrooms!

”There is no such thing

as bad weather, only

inappropriate clothing.”

KUBB TOURNAMENT

Kubb is a game said to have roots back to the Viking age, but there is no firm evidence of this. Today’s version originated on the island of Gotland in Sweden. It can be played by 2-12 players, and the game consists of 1 king, 10 kubbs and 6 throwing sticks. Slight variations of the rules exists, but the ultimate object is to knock the “king” over. This, together with the strategic nature of the game, has led some players to call it “Viking Chess”.

The winners of the 63 Degrees North and Trondheim Games will also be announced. Please note that alcoholic beverages are not allowed on campus.
