Module Summaries
Subject-specific modules:FC005 Introduction to Social Sciences
This module offers an introduction to the four key aspects of social science: anthropology, sociology, economics and political science. The module also examines the role of society and a number of important social issues.
FC006 Economics in an International Context
You will develop an understanding of the theory and practice of how markets operate and the factors influencing international trade and investment.
FC009 Business and the Business Environment
You will learn about the national and international business environment, review various types of businesses and their different objectives, and consider the implications of globalisation.
FC010 Business Enterprise
This module examines the concept of enterprise considers how and why economic activity develops, the role of culture and how to analyse business performance.
FC011 The Individual, State and Society
This module develops an overview of the philosophical, economic, social and political aspects of the important relationship that exists between the individual, state and society.
FC012 Introduction to Legal Systems and Principles
You will be given the knowledge to develop a broad-based, fundamental grounding in legal principles and systems.
FC040 Statistics
This module develops an understanding of statistics and basic mathematics, as well as an ability to analyse and interpret data.
Extra core module for three-term (Language programme): FC201 Language for Study 1
You will improve your vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation through a variety of fun and interactive teaching. The module refers to Skills for Study 1 and helps you build confidence, write short essays, enter into discussions and summarise information orally.
Common core modules: FC202 Language for Study 2
analyse written and oral information better, and present your views in practical forms including short reports and oral interactions involving analysing and speculating on data. This module also refers to content on Skills for Study 2.
FC203 Language for Study 3
In this module, which refers to the Skills for Study 3 module, you will learn to understand and use language to support complex lines of argument and clearly present your own opinions. You will explore evidence for lines of thought in writing and in discussions.
FC501 Skills for Study 1
You will be encouraged to communicate confidently and become aware of basic analytical thinking. You will learn how to undertake research and to avoid plagiarism, as well as note-taking,
presentation and essay-writing skills.
FC502 Skills for Study 2
You will build up critical analysis skills through understanding written and spoken information and then reporting your views orally and in writing. You will learn to apply judgement and reasoning in forming conclusions.
FC503 Skills for Study 3
You will build on the skills learnt in Skills for Study 2, researching and analysing information and presenting conclusions in a constructive and considered fashion in writing and through oral presentations.
Extra core modules for three-term (Enhancement) programme: FCEN01 Personal Development and Pre-Study Skills
This is a more advanced study of various subjects and academic skills on your programme. You will be trained in a range of study, numeracy and personal development skills appropriate to the level of a Foundation Certificate. You will also learn concepts and topics that will support your development as a student in a UK university.
FCEN03 Introduction to British Society and Culture
You will be given an academic introduction to life and culture in the UK, which should complement your experiences of living and studying in the UK as an international student. The module aims to combine an overview of the structure of British society with an
understanding of the historical influence that created it.
FCEN06 Preparatory Mathematics and Information Communications Technology
You will develop basic IT skills, alongside an awareness of how computers can be used efficiently and effectively for study in the UK. You will also develop an understanding of how computers can be utilised effectively in the context of studying at a modern UK university. Additionally, you will be given a solid grounding in mathematics which will benefit your studies throughout.
