The Mystery and Meaning

of Suffering

(World Day of Sick)

with Monsignor Peter Bui

Presentation will also be live streamed on Facebook.com

No one is exempt from su

ering, not even Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Because suffering is so common yet so difficult to understand and talk about, it’s easy to rely on platitudes

such as “It’s all part of God’s plan” to explain away its existence. However, even the best rational explana-tions of why suffering exists fall short. Suffering is a mystery and there will never be an adequate explana-tion to the problem of suffering as we journey through this earthly life.

Man will always question about the meaning and existence of human suffering, such as: If God is

all-powerful and all-good and loving, why do bad things happen, especially to the innocents? If God does not

directly will suffering, why does He permit it? Why is it that some go through life strong and healthy while

others suffer crippling disease? Instead of a futile attempt to answer the questions of why of human suff

er-ing, our spiritual talk will deal with the more important question of where and how: “Where do I find God

in suffering? How can I make the most of suffering with hope and love and not squander the

opportuni-ties?”

We will explore especially Scripture as the Word of God and Church teaching to help us enter a little bit

into God’s perspective on human suffering and how suffering has a crucial role in our redemption and our

strive for holiness.

FEAST OF FAITH

The Gloria (1)

The Gloria, or Glory to God, follows the

peni-tential rite. Both are acts of praise. In the penipeni-tential

rite, we sing of the mercy of Christ. In the Gloria we

praise God’s saving action in the universe.

The Gloria is a relatively late addition to the

Mass. It first appeared in the Roman liturgy in the

sixth century, and then it was sung only by the

pope—and only on Christmas! With time, the hymn

came to be sung by bishops on major feasts, and

then by priests; finally, it became the song of the

en-tire assembly. With the advent of more elaborate

musical settings, the people gradually stopped

sing-ing the Gloria, until this song of the people became

the exclusive domain of the priest and the choir. But

the liturgical reforms have restored it to its place as

primarily the song of the assembly.

The language of the Gloria echoes the New

Tes-tament canticles. It may be begun by the priest, the

cantor, and the entire assembly in varied

combina-tions. The Gloria is sometimes called the “greater

doxology,” and in some ways it is like an extended,

ecstatic version of the familiar doxology (“Glory be

to the Father”) prayed in the Divine Office and the

rosary.
