Thomas J. Harrison | Chief Executive Officer, Co-Founder and Co-Owner

Thomas brings 35-plus years of senior management experience, including serving as an executive with public national and regional home builders/developers. His focus on senior housing, including the planning, development and successful management of independent and assisted living communities, has earned him national recognition.

Richard J. Hutchinson | President, Chief Financial Officer, Co-Founder and Co-Owner

Richard has 25-plus years of business achievement and financial expertise, including serving a financial leadership role in a real estate development company. He was also the majority owner and president of a management-consulting firm, and has served on the board of the American Seniors Housing Association since 1998.

Thomas Costello | Senior Vice President of Finance, Accounting & Information Technology

After graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Thomas has been working in the senior-living industry for more than 15 years. His expertise in financial modeling, risk management and treasury management has helped Discovery Senior Living excel.

Diana Ferrante Thies | Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales

For more than half of her 25 year career, Diana has focused her marketing acumen on the senior-housing industry. Her work for diverse senior-living markets across the Southern United States has garnered national awards.

Randy Smith | Senior Vice President of Operations

Randy’s sharp operational focus for the past 15 years in senior living communities across the country helped aid in their growth and success. He continues to develop and direct operational strategies, tactical plans and revenue performance targets.

Richard L. Rekar | Vice President of Accounting

Richard has worked in the auditing and accounting profession for 35 years plus. He has spent more than a decade as a corporate controller and Vice President of Accounting in the builder/developer and senior-living industry.

Tammy Kaminski | Vice President of Construction

Tammy has more than 20 years of diverse experience across all segments of construction, having worked in and managed extensive projects large and small. Her accomplishments as a project engineer and manager include production in the commercial, educational, governmental, recreational, and retail industries.

Debra Keesee | Director of Sales

Debra has more than a decade of national sales experience in the senior living industry. She has led numerous sales teams to reach and exceed their occupancy and census goals.

Scott M. Winans, NHA | Regional Vice President of Operations, Florida, Alabama and Georgia Regions

Scott has been serving seniors in senior-living communities and healthcare settings for 25 years, working his way from Director of Operations at the community level to regional roles. He is also a licensed Nursing Home Administrator in both Florida and Pennsylvania.

Chad is a senior-living management professional with more than 16 years of success in community operations and sales. Mr. Harrison is the CEO and co-founder of Discovery Senior Living, a premier regional developer and operator of high-end, rental senior-housing communities established in 2009. The company’s affiliated entities include: Aston Gardens Investors, Discovery Village Investors, Discovery At Home, Discovery Development Group, Discovery Management Group, Discovery Realty, Discovery University and Regency Pointe. Mr. Harrison founded Discovery Senior Living after having successfully served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Aston Care Systems, Inc. He guided Aston to a stabilized enterprise while achieving record revenues and profits. The operational success of Aston helped to bolster its portfolio sale to Sunrise Senior Living for $450 million dollars, a Senior Housing record (on a per-unit basis). Less then three years later, Mr. Harrison brought a team together that re-purchased Aston (Sunrises shares at a substantial discount), and became the managing director of the enterprise. Mr. Harrison began his career as a home builder with Kaufman & Broad (a national homebuilder and publicly traded company) and has held various senior management level positions with major national homebuilders, including California Homes, Toll Brothers, Taylor Woodrow, Ashton Woods Homes, and WCI Communities. Mr. Harrison brings over 35 years of successful senior management experience to the organization with the last 20 years dedicated to senior living.

Mr. Harrison is a nationally recognized leader within the senior housing industry. His innovative and creative leadership has help set the standard for excellence in caring for seniors and building world-class senior residences that have garnered multiple national awards: National Association of Home Builders Senior Housing Council “Best Overall Senior Community,” “Best Clubhouse,” “Best Apartment Design,” Two-time Platinum Winner “Best Mail Campaigns,” and “Best Promotional Campaigns,” and also a Grand Aurora Award Winner “Best Overall Senior Housing Community.”

He is an approved New York State Real Estate Instructor. He has taught marketing at the University of Miami Graduate Law School and has been a visiting lecturer at the National Association of Home Builders, the Senior Housing Council and the National Association of Realtors. Among his many accomplishments include being awarded “Houston Builder of the Year,” “Texas Builder of the Year,” and National Gold Award for “Sales and Marketing Management.” Mr. Harrison attended Glendale College and UCLA as an undergraduate, and has completed the “Executive Training Program” at Harvard’s Graduate School of Business. Mr. Harrison is a combat decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in Vietnam with the 3rd Marine Division.

Mr. Harrison and his wife Michele live in Naples, Florida, and are active within the community. They are avid boaters and golfers. Mrs. Harrison is a member of the Naples Chambers Board and past President of Collier County Home Builders Association (CBIA) and the Naples Area Board of Realtors (NABOR).

Mr. Hutchinson is the co-founder and President of Discovery Senior Living, a premier regional developer and operator of high-end, rental senior-housing communities. Currently Discovery has in excess of 5,000 senior apartments, independent living, assisted living and memory care units in operation or under development with communities located throughout the south and southeast United States.

Prior to joining Discovery, Mr. Hutchinson held the position of Chief Financial Officer for more than 10 years, from 1996 to 2006, with Aston Care Systems, Inc. As Aston’s Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Hutchinson developed the initial strategic business plan, secured necessary equity, financed the development and construction, and ultimately negotiated the sale of the 2,000 unit portfolio. During his 20+ year career he has negotiated and closed more than $1 billion in equity and debt transactions, while establishing relationships with many of the industries’ key financiers, investors and operators.

Mr. Hutchinson is married with two sons and served in the U.S. Army from 1986 to 1994 including a tour during Desert Storm. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Leo College earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and is a former Certified Public Accountant.

Mr. Costello is the Senior Vice President of Finance, Accounting and Information Technology for Discovery Senior Living and its affiliated entities. He has managed the treasury and IT operations for over a decade. In this role his responsibilities include managing cash flow, short- and long-term planning, financial analysis and reporting, as well as risk management. Additionally, he is responsible for constructing the pro forma financial models for all new projects and he works closely with the CFO on all major financing transactions.

Mr. Costello brings a wide range of experience to Discovery beyond debits and credits. He began his career in Boston in the property & casualty insurance industry where he gained proficiency in many of the nuances of risk management. In 1994 he relocated to Tampa, Florida, where he went to work for Price Waterhouse providing research and analysis to the firm’s management. It was also at Price Waterhouse where Mr. Costello began building complex financial models and database applications. These solved many of the firm’s logistical problems by combining billing systems at a time when the firm merged with Coopers & Lybrand. Additionally, Mr. Costello has worked as a consultant with companies such as the New York Times, Inc. to streamline efficiencies in finance and accounting operations through rigorous workflow analysis and identifying and implementing best practices.

In 2000 Mr. Costello joined Discovery’s predecessor, Aston Care Systems, Inc. while the Aston Gardens portfolio was in development. Mr. Costello managed the cash flows and cost reporting for the last four projects Aston developed. He also developed the pro-forma models for each of the projects, which planned the projects from land acquisition, development, fill-up, stabilized operations and, ultimately, to sale.

Mr. Costello graduated from Bentley College with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Fraternity. He lives in Land O Lakes, Florida, and when he is not spending time with his wife and two children he is active in Tampa’s live music scene playing bass and guitar.

Ms. Thies is the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Discovery Senior Living and its affiliated entities. She has directed and managed marketing for the Discovery Senior Living portfolio for more than 14 years. Her responsibilities include strategic marketing and analysis for the development and implementation of lead-generating and lead-converting campaigns, programs, branding awareness building. Recently accepting the Senior Vice President role of Sales, she is also responsible for sales programs, sales policies and procedures and training programs to help increase occupancy and overall census.

Ms. Thies has a diverse marketing background ranging across a number of different industries. She started her marketing career in the service-oriented banking industry but then moved into the consumer products environment. She has been responsible for most aspects of consumer product marketing including; focus group research, production, packaging, retail merchandising and planograms, tradeshows, sales information, product launches, collateral materials, statistical sales data and analysis.

After leaving her home state of New York and moving to Florida, Ms. Thies took her marketing skills to a pioneer in the world of online education, Walden University. After successfully implementing new marketing strategies that helped increase Walden’s brand awareness and enrollment, Ms. Thies joined the team of Aston Care Systems, Inc. the developers and operators of Aston Gardens Communities. It’s here where she continues to serve the senior-living industry with cutting-edge programs and marketing. Her hands-on approach, creative marketing strategies and ability to react to changing market needs have propelled Discovery Senior Living to become a market leader in the industry.

She has been the recipient of a multitude of regional, national and international marketing awards from the National Association of Homebuilders-Seniors Housing Council, the Mature Media Awards and the International Generations Awards for various marketing arenas including print media advertising, promotional events, collateral, video and magazine production, copywriting, photography, direct mail, and electronic media.

Ms. Thies graduated Cum Laude from Pace University, Lubin School of Business and holds a B.B.A. in Marketing with a minor in Advertising and Promotion. While at Pace, she was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society. She is also a Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) granted by the National Association of Homebuilders continuing education department.

When she isn’t boating, golfing or enjoying the outdoors with her husband and her dogs, Ms. Thies can be found volunteering and fighting for animal rights.

Mr. Smith is the Senior Vice President of Operations for Discovery Senior Living and its affiliated organizations. His focus at Discovery Senior Living is driving the success of all aspects of operations of the company as well as working directly with the CEO and CFO to create and execute strategic operational, economic and growth planning for the organization. He has worked for a variety of senior-living communities throughout his career and his expertise was a key factor in the successful operations of these companies.

Mr. Smith joined the Discovery Senior Living team in 2015, bringing more than 15 years of experience in operations, business development and general management. He began his career in the field of management and soon progressed into the senior-living industry where he held various leadership positions for highly regarded assisted- and independent-living communities. He has been involved in developing and directing operational strategies, tactical plans, and revenue performance targets and his contribution has resulted in higher resident satisfaction rates, greater net incomes and increased regional census ranking.

In previous positions working with senior-living companies, Mr. Smith was responsible for all operations of the communities, including sales and marketing, quality assurance, dining services, care management, programming, human resources and financial management. His expertise resides in real estate, sales and marketing, accounting and operations, mergers and acquisitions and organizational offerings designed to fortify growth and enhance profitability. Additional strengths include development of business, strategizing, quantitative and qualitative analysis, managing capital and operating budgets, evaluating and addressing financial risk, customer acquisition and retention strategies and written, verbal and formal presentations.

Mr. Smith received his master’s degree in Business Administration from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland. He currently resides in Bonita Springs.

Mr. Rekar is the Vice President of Accounting for Discovery Senior Living. He has directed and managed the accounting function for the Aston Gardens portfolio since 2009. In this role, his responsibilities include implementing and monitoring internal controls, managing the daily accounting process, working with the communities to ensure transactions are completed in a consistent and timely manor, managing accounts payable and finalizing monthly financial statements.

Mr. Rekar has a very strong audit and accounting background. He spent 18 years in internal auditing with a Michigan bank, where he became the bank’s Director of Internal Auditing helping the bank grow into one of Michigan’s leading financial institutions. Responsibilities included directing the internal audit group, implementing and managing financial and procedural controls, conducting audits and reporting results to the Board of Directors.

Mr. Rekar moved to Naples more than 14 years ago, when he accepted a position with a local construction company as Controller to manage the accounting and financial reporting function. He then joined the Discovery Senior Living team as Controller and was later promoted to Vice President of Accounting, where he continues to practice his auditing and accounting skills. As the Vice President of Accounting, he is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day accounting functions as well as working directly with the communities and management team to help create and execute strategic operational, economic and growth planning for the company.

Mr. Rekar graduated from Walsh College, a Business and Accounting school near Detroit, Michigan, with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. While working in Michigan he was a member and served on the board of the Detroit Institute of Internal Auditors and was also a Certified Bank Auditor.

Mr. Rekar and his wife have been married for almost 35 years and are enjoying the Florida lifestyle in Naples.

Ms. Kaminski was recently promoted to Vice President of Construction from Director of Project Management and Construction. Her primary responsibility is planning and overseeing the construction of each new community from start to finish, as well as expansion projects and remodeling projects.

Ms. Kaminski has more than 20 years of diverse experience across all levels and segments of construction, having worked and managed extensive projects large and small. Her accomplishments as a project engineer and manager include production in the commercial, educational, governmental, recreational, and retail shopping center industries. She holds a Class “A” Florida General Contractors License, and a LEED AP credential from the U.S. Green Building Council, affirming her advanced knowledge in “green” building.

Prior to joining Discovery Senior Living, Ms. Kaminski was a project manager with Lodge Construction for six years, where her accomplishments include overseeing the work on several Southwest Florida Projects, including three fire stations, the Fort Myers downtown library, two parks, and an $8 million renovation and addition to Florida Gulf Coast University’s Student Union building.

Ms. Kaminski started her construction and engineering career with Whiting-Turner construction company as a project engineer working on various renovations at Yale Medical School. After being transferred to Naples, Florida she was an engineer for a $13 million expansion of a mall in Fort Myers and the construction of the $18 million Coastland Center shopping mall in Naples. In 1997, she joined Owen-Ames-Kimball where she managed several large construction projects, including Florida Gulf Coast University in Estero, Chico’s FAS world headquarters and McGregor Baptist Church in Fort Myers, and the 149,000 square-foot Diplomat Middle School in Cape Coral.

In 2002, Ms. Kaminski accepted a position with J. L. Wallace Inc. as a Senior Project Manager. Her experience during five years with the company ranged from job cost estimates and budgeting, to job-site scheduling and presentations for prospective projects. Overseeing three superintendents, Ms. Kaminski was involved with building, restoring or renovating a fire station, an automobile dealership, a community clubhouse and the 40-acre Estero Community Park, among other assignments.

Ms. Kaminski graduated from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1994 where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture with a sub-concentration in Construction Management.

Ms. Keesee is the Director of Sales for Discovery Senior Living and its affiliated organizations. In this position, she manages support functions essential to the company’s sales teams’ performance, productivity and census building growth. Ms. Keesee also oversees training for Senior Leasing Counselors and is responsible for ensuring that all sales policies and procedure guidelines are followed in order to meet and exceed sales goals.

Ms. Keesee joined Discovery Senior Living in 2015, bringing more than 11 years of sales and marketing experience. Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Keesee has acted as National Director of Sales & Marketing and Regional Director of Sales & Marketing for various senior-living communities and has been responsible for a total of 49 properties within a variety of states. In former positions, Ms. Keesee specialized in leading sales and marketing teams, overseeing training programs for employees and new team members, assisting the sales team in exceeding total budget revenues, coordinating with the operations team to identify and eliminate obstacles for revenue growth, monitoring sales statistics through state-of-the-art reporting systems and managing the development of sales and marketing reports. Her talents include strategic planning and organization to provide consistent results in increased sales and profitability, along with team building, communication, interpersonal presentation and training skills.

Ms. Keesee has been an active member of the Virginia Task Force on Aging since 2005. She was featured in the Assisted Living Executive Magazine in 2006, received Assisted Living Essay recognition from George Mason University in 2004 and was awarded the 1997 Whitehall-Robins Northeast Region Sales Representative of the year.

Ms. Keesee has been married to her husband Jack for 37 years and they have one son, Dustin who currently resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Ms. Keesee recently moved to Bonita Springs, FL. In her free time, she enjoys working as a mixed media artist and dolphin watching.

Mr. Winans is the Regional Vice President of Operations for Discovery Senior Living covering Florida, Georgia and Alabama communities. Mr. Winans has worked for numerous renowned senior-housing companies throughout his career including a prior assignment as the Regional Director of the Sun City communities for the Discovery managed award-winning Aston Gardens portfolio. As the Regional Vice President of Operations, his duties include being responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the communities as well as working directly with the Senior Vice President of Operations to create and execute strategic operational, economic and growth planning for the company.

Mr. Winans began his career as a licensed nursing home administrator with a large continuing care retirement center as the Director of Operations and has held various senior level management positions with major senior-living companies, including Marriott and Hyatt. Mr. Winans brings a total of 25 years of successful senior management experience to the organization within both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors of the industry.

Mr. Winans is a licensed nursing home administrator in Florida and Pennsylvania. He has been involved in a multitude of multi-million dollar expansion and renovation projects, and has served in numerous professional association roles on a State and National level. He is a past member of PANPHA and served on its Education Committee; he also served on the Nursing Home Committee of FAHA and was a significant contributor to the EAGLE peer review committee involved with the United Methodist Health and Welfare Ministries. He has also committed his time in a volunteer capacity serving as the Co-Chair of the Alzheimer’s Committee for Broward County as well as the American Heart Association.

Mr. Winans is a preceptor in the senior-living industry as a Nursing Home Administrator and has successfully mentored several interns in preparation for their NHA license. He is also certified as a Retirement Housing Professional through the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and has accomplished a variety of projects under their auspices.

Originally from Chicago, Mr. Winans has resided in Florida for the past 20 years and currently lives in Bonita Springs. He is an avid martial artist and has competed regionally. His interests are running (past marathoner), rock climbing, golfing, sail boating, drumming and tennis.

Mr. Winans attended Eastern Illinois University as an undergraduate and received his Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration and continued his graduate work from St. Joseph’s College in Healthcare Administration. He also participated in Eta Sigma Gamma, a professional health care organization and received a health care scholarship.

Mr. Simpson is the Regional Director of Operations for the Texas communities. He is responsible for managing the overall operations of these communities. Mr. Simpson is a senior-living management professional with more than 16 years of success in community operations and sales.

His primary responsibilities and accomplishments over the years include developing and leading teams to meet and exceed occupancy, establishing and upholding operating standards and creating a customer- and service-centered culture.

Before joining Discovery Senior Living, Mr. Simpson was the Corporate Director of Sales and Marketing at Conservatory Senior Living in Texas. His primary focus was to increase occupancy, provide operations support and assist in the development of a comprehensive marketing plan. He entered the senior-living industry in 1998 with start-up company Chancellor Senior Management Ltd. in Columbus, Ohio. He started as a project coordinator and worked his way up to Director of Sales and Marketing and then Senior Vice President/Managing Director over an eight-year period. Mr. Simpson was instrumental in the successful and timely openings of 12 communities that offered independent living, assisted living and memory care in Ohio and West Virginia.

Mr. Simpson then joined Brookdale Senior Living as the Regional Sales and Marketing Director. Over a seven-year period, he successfully surpassed sales and occupancy objectives in various rural and metro regions in both smaller assisted living campuses and larger Continuing Care Retirement Communities. During this time, the various regions under his management were frequently honored as occupancy leaders within the organization. He also was influential in the creation of a competitive database software, a major update of the Customer Relationship Management software, changes in operations related to the Affordable Care Act, and the acquisition of Horizon Bay Senior Living.

He graduated Cum Laude from Morehead State University in Kentucky with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism with an emphasis on public relations and advertising, and a minor in marketing. Mr. Simpson has taken a special interest in being active in the community, included serving as a team leader for the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” and serving as a Guardian with Honor Flight. His other passions in life lie in family, music, good food and staying physically fit.
