McKendree Football News and Notes...
McKENDREE PICKED FOURTH IN 2015 GLVC PRE-SEASON POLL: The Bearcats earned the No. 4 spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference football pre-season poll that was released at the 2015 GLVC Football Kickoff hosted by McKendree University on July 31. McKendree received 46 points in the voting conducted among the league’s nine head coaches.
BAAR RECEIVES PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITIONS: Junior defensive lineman Lucky Baar has received NCAA Division II pre-season All-America status from several national media outlets. Back in June, Baar was named to the Division II pre-season All-America squad for Lindy’s Sports, which produces a nationally-recognized pre-season football publication. In addition, Baar grabbed similar mentions from HERO Sports (formerly Bennett Rank) and USA College Football.
BABCOCK ADDS HARRISON, BETTASSO TO STAFF: Head coach Mike Babcock introduced the two newest members of the McKendree football coach-ing staff back in January. One is a familiar face in Michael Harrison, who returns to his alma mater as the assistant head coach, defensive pass game coordina-tor and defensive backs coach for the Bearcats. Harrison returns to McKendree after spending the last two seasons at Lindenwood University-Belleville. Also joining the staff for McKendree in 2015 is Joe Bettasso, who takes the reins as the Bearcats’ defensive coordinator after spending the previous two seasons in the same role at Quincy University. Bettasso also served as the head coach at McPherson College in Kansas during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Bearcat Tracks...
FOR OPENERS...: McKendree has posted a record of 11-8 (.579) in season-opening games, dating back to the Bearcats’ return to the gridiron in 1996. In the first road game of the season, McKendree has an 8-11 mark (.421) in that same span. The Bearcats’ last victory in the first road game of a season came back in 2009, a 55-3 triumph at Olivet Nazarene University.
RAISING THE BAAR: Junior defensive end Lucky Baar set new McKendree program records with 26 1/2 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback sacks in 2014. Baar led all NCAA Division II players in sacks a year ago, and also topped the national statistics chart with 1.64 sacks per game. Baar became the first Bearcat football player to top an NCAA statistical category since the move to Division II in 2013.
WENTLAND TACKLES BEARCATS’ SEASON MARK: Junior linebacker A.J. Wentland established a new McKendree season record with his 132 tackles in 2014. He topped the previous mark of 108 stops set by Brandon Nigro during the 2011 campaign.
CAMERON CAN DO: At the outset of the 2015 season, senior wide receiver Cameron James is second on the Bearcats’ career list with 99 receptions and is fourth in both receiving yards (980) and touchdown catches (9). James is also the all-time leader at McKendree in kick returns (52) and is second in kick return yards (1,151). For punt returns, James is fifth on the Bearcats’ career list for total returns (39) and is fourth in punt return yards (498).
THE FACTS ON FISHER, PART ONE: In 2014, senior quarterback Isaac Fisher became the first McKendree signal-caller to lead the team in rushing since the football program revival in 1996. Fisher enters tonight’s game with 946 career rushing yards, and needs just 54 yards to become the first Bearcats’ THE FACTS ON FISHER, PART TWO: Isaac Fisher already holds five all-time career marks entering his senior campaign, including total offensive yards (6,662), pass attempts (891), pass completions (537), passing yards (5,716) and passing touchdowns (43).
20 AND COUNTING: The kickoff to 2015 marks the 20th season of football at McKendree since the program was revived in 1996.
UNIFORM DECISION: The 2015 season will mark a new era for the way the Bearcats will look on the home playing surface at Leemon Field. For the first time in program history, McKendree will have a new primary color for both its home uniforms and helmets. The Bearcats will be wearing an all-graphite look for their home uniforms. Under Armour produced the team’s new look. McKendree will also sport a new purple, matte-finish helmet on the playing field this season. The Bearcats’ icon logo will be sported on each side of the helmets worn in games.
TURF TIME: Speaking of turf, the Bearcats will open the 2015 season with a brand-new playing surface installed at Leemon Field over the summer. The new turf was manufactured by Shaw Sports Turf based in Calhoun, Ga., and was installed by Byrne and Jones of St. Louis. McKendree will be playing its home games on the Legion brand of Shaw Sports Turf. The new surface replaces the original artificial turf installed at Leemon Field back in 2005.
THEY CALL IT THE STREAK: McKendree enters the 2015 season riding the five-game win streak that closed out the 2014 campaign. That matches the Bearcats’ longest win streak since 2010. Another win would give McKendree its longest streak of consecutive victories since the 2009 season, when the Bearcats reeled off nine wins in a row.
HONORING 20 SEASONS OF McKENDREE FOOTBALL: Members of the inaugural 1996 McKendree football team along with key individuals who helped revive the program will be on hand prior to the Bearcats’ Sept. 19 game at Leemon Field against Northwood University. There will be a special pre-game ceremony to recognize the 20th season of the modern era of McKendree football.

Sept. 12, 1998McKendree broke open a close game with 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 39-9 victory over Doane College at Leemon Field. The win marked the first of the 1998 season for the Bearcats, along with the 100th career triumph for McKendree head coach Carl Poelker. Two of the three touchdowns scored in the final period for the Bearcats came via interception returns -- 25 yards for Rory O’Connell and 50 yards for John Foran. Billy Gray only com-pleted two passes on the day, with one resulting in a 21-yard TD strike to Brett Gross. Mike Garavalia showed the way defensively with 10 tackles, including three quarterback sacks.
Sept. 12, 2009
Joe Beimfohr rushed for a career-high 129 yards and two touchdowns as McK-endree won its 2009 home opener over Marian University, 21-17. Quarterback Austin Fisher added a 26-yard scoring run in the third quarter that proved to be the winning score for the Bearcats. The visiting Knights pulled within four points in the fourth quarter, but an interception by Derrick Quals with two minutes to play helped seal the victory for McKendree. The interception marked the fourth takeaway for the Bearcats’ defense on the day. Antonio Greer had a team-best 12 tackles in the contest.

and the Great Lakes Valley Conference
Mike Babcock was named as the 17th football coach in the history of the Bearcats’ program back in Decem-ber 2013. The 2015 season will mark Babcock’s third on the sidelines for the Bearcats.
The 2014 campaign turned into a memorable one on many fronts for Babcock and the Bearcat football pro-gram. McKendree closed the year as one of the hottest teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, winning its final five games to post a 5-6 overall record. The late-season run also gave the Bearcats a 5-3 mark in GLVC play, which enabled the squad to finish in a tie for second in the league standings. That is McKendree’s highest GLVC finish in the conference’s brief football history.
There were several record-breaking performances along the way enjoyed by some of McKendree’s veteran players. Sophomore defensive lineman Lucky Baar rewrote the Bearcats’ record book by leading NCAA Division II with 26 1/2 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback sacks. Both statistics also set new program and league records as Baar earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Year honors along with first-team Little All-America accolades from the Associated Press. Baar became the first Bearcat player to earn either honor.
Baar led a group of 10 McKendree players who received All-GLVC awards which included sophomore linebacker A.J. Wentland and junior offensive line-man Derrik Starrett as first-team honorees. In his first year as a starter at middle linebacker, Wentland had a school-record 132 tackles and had at least 10 tackles in a game 10 times during the Bearcats’ 11-game schedule.
On the offensive side of the ball, Babcock’s Bearcats were just as prolific in 2014. As a team, McKendree established new program marks in nearly every passing category. Led by junior Isaac Fisher, the Bearcats’ quarterbacks threw for 2,749 yards while completing nearly 62 percent of their pass attempts. The season passing average of 249.9 yards per game also set a new team record. McKendree finished in the top third of the GLVC in total offense (428.4 YPG), passing offense (249.9 YPG and scoring offense (30.1 PPG). During the Bearcats’ season-ending five-game win streak, the offensive unit produced 41 points per contest while gaining better than 512 yards per outing.
Fisher became one of the top offensive threats in the GLVC in 2014. In addi-tion to throwing for a career-high 2,722 yards and tying a personal best with 19 touchdown passes, Fisher became the first McKendree quarterback to lead the team in rushing for a season. He gained 764 yards on the ground and led the Bearcats with nine rushing TDs. Under Babcock’s tutelage, Fisher was second in the GLVC in both total offense (316.9 YPG) and passing (247.5 YPG). In his first season at McKendree, Babcock led the Bearcats to four victories, including a thrilling 32-28 come-from-behind win in the 2013 season opener -- which also marked Babcock’s head coaching debut -- at Leemon Field against Tiffin University. A total of 11 McKendree players earned All-Conference honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference during Babcock’s rookie season as a head coach, including first-team selections in senior Richie Rebmann and sophomore Brett Pearman.
Babcock came to McKendree after spending five years as an assistant coach at Colorado State University-Pueblo, one of the top NCAA Division II programs in the country. In his last four years at CSU-Pueblo, Babcock served as the ThunderWolves’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Under his leadership, CSU-Pueblo registered back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and claimed Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) championships. The ThunderWolves were the top-ranked team in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) regular-season poll in both 2011 and 2012.
With Babcock at the offensive controls, CSU-Pueblo set 13 team and 15 individual offensive records as the ThunderWolves advanced to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2012. CSU-Pueblo set new team season standards in every major passing category, including attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns and completion percentage. The Thunder-Wolves also established new records for total offensive yards, plays and points scored this year.
During the 2012 season, CSU-Pueblo averaged 35.8 points and 442.6 yards of total offense per game this season. The ThunderWolves were ranked first in the RMAC and 11th in NCAA Division II in passing efficiency through games of Dec. 1. In addition, CSU-Pueblo ranked among the top 30 in the nation in scoring offense.
Babcock arrived at CSU-Pueblo after spending the 2007 season as the tight ends coach and director of football operations at the University of San Diego, where he helped the Toreros to a Pioneer Conference championship. Prior to that, Babcock served as the quality control intern for offense for two seasons at the University of Colorado. He served as an assistant in coaching the Buffaloes’ offensive line, tight end and special teams.
Babcock began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He was an undergraduate and graduate as-sistant with the Bruins from 2000-04. After spending the 2000-02 season coach-ing the UCLA linebackers, Babcock shifted to defensive line coach in 2003. He wrapped up his stay at UCLA by guiding the Bruins’ offensive line in 2004. During his stay at UCLA, Babcock helped coach the Bruins to four bowl ap-pearances, and also helped guide the top-ranked defensive unit in the Pac-10 in 2001.
As an undergraduate at UCLA, Babcock was a linebacker and played on the Bruins’ 1997 and 1998 Pac-10 championship squads, and played in both the Cotton Bowl (1998) and Rose Bowl (1999). UCLA put together a 20-game win streak during Babcock’s playing days. Babcock earned both of his degrees from UCLA – an undergraduate degree in 2002 along with his master’s degree in 2005.
Babcock and his wife Kimberly have two children: Tyler and Emily.
