And the Finalists for the 1999 Excellence in Teaching Awards are...

This year, 125 of Alberta's most creative and innovative teachers have been selected as the 1999 Excellence in Teaching Awards finalists. In addition, three finalists also have been selected for the TELUS Innovative Use of Technology Award.

Throughout the province, parents, educators and other community members nominated 459 teachers for their achievements in schools.

"Albertans are proud of the contributions our teachers make in the classroom every day," said Gary Mar, Minister of Education. "The 128 finalists are exceptional teachers whose creative approaches to learning inspire students and other colleagues to be their best."

"The Excellence in Teaching Awards are truly a community celebration honouring teachers who have made a tremendous impact on their students,"said John Dowd, Chair of the Excellence in Teaching Awards Foundation, and Vice President, Western Canada, The Document Company, XEROX.

From the finalists, 20 provincial recipients of an Excellence in Teaching Award and one recipient of the TELUS Innovative Use of Technology Award will be honoured at a gala ceremony to be held in Calgary, May 8, 1999.

The 1999 Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented by The Document Company, XEROX, and the Excellence in Teaching Awards Foundation supported by Alberta Education. Foundation members include the Alberta School Boards Association; the Alberta Teachers' Association; Fraser Milner; Syncrude; TELUS; The Document Company, XEROX; and The Edmonton Journal.
