A Prayer for

Lenten

Grace

Loving God,

During the sacred season of Lent, bring

me closer to You.

Prepare a place in my home and heart

for silence and solitude,

so that I may re-discover the grace of a

prayer-full life.

Help me to fast from those things that

threaten the well-being of body and soul

and remind me of the grace of

simplici-ty.

Enlarge my heart so that I give to those

in need and, in so doing, re-discover the

grace of gratitude and generosity.

May this season be a grace-filled time

to rekindle my love for and faith in

You.

Amen.

What is Lent?

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasƟng, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparaƟon to celebrate the Lord's ResurrecƟon at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we pracƟce self-control through fasƟng. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of bapƟsm in which we were also bapƟzed into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

Many know of the tradiƟon of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to pracƟce self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasƟng tradiƟon in this reŇecƟon. In addiƟon, the giving of alms is one way to share God's giŌs—not only through the distribuƟon of money, but through the sharing of our Ɵme and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).

In Lent, the bapƟzed are called to renew their bapƟsmal commitment as others prepare to be bapƟzed through theRite of ChrisƟan IniƟaƟon of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

AbsƟnence -- Catholics over 14 years of age are

bound to the obligaƟon of absƟnence.

AbsƟnence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday

and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of absƟnence,

meat may not be used at all.

Fast -- Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning

of their 60th year are bound to the obligaƟon of

fasƟng. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the

days of fasƟng. On these days, only one full meal

is allowed. Two other meatless meals, suĸcient

to maintain strength, may be taken according to

each one’s needs, but together they should not

equal another full meal. EaƟng between meals is

not permiƩed, but liquids, including milk and

fruit juices are allowed.

Regarding other weekdays of Lent, parƟcipaƟon

in daily Mass and the voluntary observance of

fasƟng is recommended.

Commendable, parƟcularly during Lent, is

generosity to local, naƟonal and world programs

of sharing our abundance, the tradiƟonal Lenten

DevoƟons and all the self-denial summed up in

the ChrisƟan concept of “morƟĮcaƟon.

Rice Bowl

Rice Bowl is over 40 years old and was started to engage Catholics in the US to help vicƟms of the drought in Africa in 1975. Since the Rice Bowl has millions of supporters, mostly among the youth of America who make sacriĮces during Lent to collect money in their ‘rice bowl’ or bowl or cup every Ɵme they think of spending money on a soda or donut or cookie. 25% of the money collected through Rice Bowl comes back to the archdiocese. The 75% of the money goes

to help over 100 million people in need in some way. CRS teaches people how to grow new types of crops as the climate changes and provides clean water through wells and solar powered water pumps. CRS is teaching communiƟes about how to stay safe from Covid through hand washing and social distancing. CRS is always on the

ground ready to help in disasters with over 7,000 employees naƟve to the countries yhey serve. CRS is funded by Catholics in the US and this year Rice Bowl has gone virtual. When you log into CRS RICE BOWL.COM you will see how
