Christ in Our Neighborhood

2nd Reading: 1 Cor 6:13-15, 17-20

As our Christian name gives us our identity, our faith and baptism in the Lord gives us our essence.

We are not merely Christian in name. Through the grace of Baptism, we are Christian in fact. Now, we have a share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

This is why St. Paul reminds us that our “bodies are members of Christ.”

We should remember that when we were Baptized, our whole human nature was “born again.” Not just our soul, but our body as well.

Many Christians have the idea that when we die, we will no longer have need of our body. But, this is bad Christian theology. In fact, we were designed to be human (Body and Soul), and we are to be redeemed as fully human as we share in the divine nature of Christ. When the Lord comes again in glory, he will raise us up - body and soul - in a glorified way.

Do you see your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit? Father in Heaven, as your Spirit of Truth, Love, and Mercy

sent your Son on Mission, we are called and sent by the same Spirit to carry on the mission of Jesus Christ. Help us not to fear our calling but celebrate our share in the proclamation of the Good News. Amen.

1st Reading: 2 SM 3:3-10, 19

In the Hebrew tradition, names were very im-portant. Each name revealed an identity. It would often express a certain purpose for the individual.

The name Samuel, as in our reading today,

means, “Name of God.” It can also mean, “God has heard.” It is interesting to note that Samuel was called by God even though he was young and not “even familiar with the Lord.” There is something very new and beautiful about the introduc-tion of this young prophet. Sharing the “Name of God,” he shares the identity of the Lord himself who begins something new. Recall, that it is Samuel who anoints the first two kings of Israel: Saul and David. In essence, it is as if God himself is taking charge by picking this person out of obscurity to begin something incredibly new.

In times past, Catholic families were expected to choose a Christian name for their children at Baptism. While this prac-tice is still encouraged, we recognize that each person bap-tized is called by the most important name of all: Christian. May we bear the name of Christ always as we are called and sent on His mission!

Gospel: John 1:35-42

John the Baptist calls Jesus, the “Lamb of God.” The disciples call the Lord, “Rabbi (teacher).” Andrew calls Jesus the “Messiah.” Jesus calls Simon, “Peter” (meaning, rock).

Our Church has always celebrated the three-fold mission of Jesus Christ as Priest, Prophet, and King. 1) As Priest, Jesus lays down his life freely as the sacrificial “Lamb of God.” 2) As Prophet, Jesus is the greatest “Rabbi -Teacher” of Truth, for he is Truth Himself. 3) As King, Jesus is the long awaited “Messiah” who comes to set us free.

This three-fold mission of Christ is the mission of the Church. For this reason, we see how the name of Peter is closely associated with the names given to Jesus in these few versus at the beginning of John’s Gospel. As Church, we accompany Jesus on

mission, for he is our head and (as St. Paul reminds us in the Second Reading), we are members of His Body. Sent by the Holy Spirit, the whole Christ, head and members, are on the same mission.

As Church, we all participate in the Priestly, Prophetic, and Kingly (or Royal) mission of Jesus the Christ.

How do you fit within the mission of Christ and His Church?

1) Make a commitment to live out your priestly calling by attending Mass every Sunday.

2) Make a commitment to live out your prophetic calling by reflecting on the Truth as you read the Bible daily. 3) Make a commitment to live out your kingly-royal calling by administering the mercy of Christ to others through forgiveness and acts of charity.

1ra lectura: 1 Samuel 3: 3-10, 19

En la tradición Hebrea, los nombres eran muy

importantes. Cada nombre revelaba una identidad. A menudo expresaba un cierto propósito para el

individual.

El nombre Samuel, en nuestra lectura de hoy, significa, "Nombre de Dios." También puede significar," Dios ha escuchado."

Es interesante notar que Samuel fue llamado por Dios incluso aunque era joven y "no conocía Samuel al Señor."

Hay algo muy nuevo y bello en la introducción de este profeta joven. Compartiendo el "Nombre de Dios", él comparte la identidad del Señor mismo que comienza algo nuevo. Recordemos, que es Samuel quien unge a los dos primeros reyes de Israel: Saúl y David. En esencia, es como si Dios mismo fuera hacerse cargo sacando a esta persona de la oscuridad para comenzar algo increíblemente nuevo.

En el pasado, se esperaba que las familias Católicas eligieran un nombre Cristiano para sus hijos en el Bautismo. Si bien esta práctica aún se alienta, reconocemos que cada persona bautizada es llamada por el nombre más importante de todos: Cristiano. Que llevemos el nombre de Cristo siempre porque somos llamados y enviados en Su misión!

2da lectura: 1 Corintios 6: 13-15, 17-20

Como nuestro nombre Cristiano nos da nuestra identidad, nuestra fe y el bautismo en el Señor nos da nuestra esencia.

No somos simplemente Cristianos de nombre. Por la gracia del Bautismo, somos Cristianos de hecho. Ahora, tenemos una participación en la divinidad de Cristo que se humilló él mismo para compartir en nuestra humanidad.

Esta es la razón por la cual San Pablo nos recuerda que "sus cuerpos son miembros de Cristo." Debemos recordar que cuando fuimos bautizados, toda nuestra naturaleza humana fue "nacido de nuevo." No solo nuestra alma, pero nuestro cuerpo también.

Muchos Cristianos tienen la idea de que cuando muriamos, no tendremos necesidad de nuestro cuerpo. Pero, esto es una teología Cristiana mala. De hecho, fuimos diseñados para ser humanos (Cuerpo y Alma), y debemos ser redimidos como humanos completos mientras que compartimos en la naturaleza divina de Cristo. Cuando el Señor viene de nuevo en la gloria, él nos levantará - cuerpo y alma - glorificados.

Evangelio: Juan 1: 35-42

Juan el Bautista llama a Jesús, el "Cordero de Dios." Los discípulos llaman al Señor, "Rabí (maestro)". Andrés llama a Jesús el "Mesías". Jesús llama a Simón, "Pedro" (es decir, roca).

Nuestra Iglesia siempre ha celebrado la triple misión de Jesucristo como Sacerdote, Profeta y Rey. 1) Como Sacerdote, Jesús da su vida libremente como el

sacrificado "Cordero de Dios." 2) Como Profeta, Jesús es el mejor " Rabí -Maestro" de la verdad, porque él es La Verdad misma. 3) Como Rey, Jesús es el tan esperado "Mesías" quien viene a liberarnos.

Esta triple misión de Cristo es la misión de la Iglesia. Para esta razón, vemos cómo el nombre de Pedro está estrechamente asociado con los nombres dados a Jesús en estos pocos versus en el comienzo del Evangelio de Juan.

Como Iglesia, acompañamos a Jesús en misión, porque él es nuestra cabeza y (como San Pablo nos recuerda en la Segunda Lectura), nosotros somos miembros de Su Cuerpo. Enviado por el Espíritu Santo, el Cristo entero, cabeza y miembros, están en la misma misión.

Como Iglesia, todos participamos en la Misión Sacerdotal, Profética y Real de Jesús el Cristo.

Bài đọc I: 1 Sa-mu-en 3,3b-10,19

Trong tập quán của Do Thái, tên được coi là rất quan trọng. Tên bộc lộ bản thể. Nó thường biểu lộ mục đích của một người. Tên Sa-mu-en trong bài đọc hôm nay có nghĩa là “Tên của Thiên Chúa”. Nó cũng có nghĩa là “Thiên Chúa đã nghe”.

Thật là hấp dẫn khi lưu ý rằng Sa-mu-en được gọi bởi Thiên Chúa mặc dầu ông ta còn nhỏ và chưa “ý thức được Đức Chúa”.

Tiên tri trẻ này được giới thiệu một cách thật là mới và đẹp. Cùng mang “Tên của Thiên Chúa”, ông cùng chung bản thể của Thiên Chúa và khởi đầu một sự việc mới. Hãy nhớ rằng Sa-mu-en đã xức dầu tấn phong cho hai vị vua đầu tiên của dân Is-ra-en: Sau-lơ và Đa-vít. Về cơ bản, dường như chính Thiên Chúa đã phụ trách chọn tiên tri này từ sự rối rem để bắt đầu một việc cực kỳ mới lạ.

Trong quá khứ, các gia đình Công Giáo chọn tên thánh cho con của họ khi lãnh Bí Tích Rửa Tội. Trong khi tập quán này vẫn còn được khuyến khích, chúng ta hãy nhận thức rằng mỗi người chịu phép Rửa được gọi bởi một tên quan trọng nhất đó là Ki-tô hữu.

Bài đọc II: 1 Cô-rin-tô 6:13-15, 17-20

Giống như tên Thánh cho chúng ta bản thể, đức tin và phép rửa tội trong Thiên Chúa cho bản chất của mỗi người chúng ta.

Chúng ta không phải chỉ là Ki-tô hữu bởi tên gọi. Qua ân sủng of Phép Rửa, chúng ta là Ki-tô hữu đích thực. Chúng ta chung phần trong thần tính của Chúa Ki-tô đã hạ mình xuống chung phận làm người.

Đây là lý do Thánh Phao-lô nhắc chúng ta rằng “thân thể của chúng ta là phần tử của Chúa Ki-tô”.

Chúng ta phải nhớ rằng khi chúng ta lãnh Phép Rửa, bản tính con người của chúng ta được “tái sinh”. Không chỉ phần linh hồn mà cả thể xác nữa.

Nhiều Ki-tô hữu quan điểm rằng khi chúng ta chết, chúng ta không cần thân xác nữa. Nhưng, đây là thần học sai lệch. Trong thực tế, chúng ta được tạo là con người (Thể Xác và Linh Hồn), và chúng ta sẽ được cứu rỗi trong con người toàn diện khi chúng ta cùng chia sẻ thiên tính của Chúa Ki-tô. Khi Chúa lại đến trong vinh quang, Ngài sẽ cho chúng ta chỗi dậy – thể xác và linh hồn – trong một cách thật ving quang.

Phúc Âm: Gio-an 1:35-42

Thánh Gio-an Tẩy Giả gọi Chúa Giê-su “Chiên Thiên Chúa”. Các môn đệ gọi Người là “Rabbi (thày giáo)”. Thánh An-rê gọi Chúa là “Đấng Cứu Độ”. Chúa Giê-su gọi Si-mon là “Peter (nghĩa là hòn đá)”.

Hội Thánh chúng ta luôn tôn kính sứ vụ ba phần của Đức Giê-su Ki-tô là Tư Tế, Ngôn Sứ, và Vương Đế. 1) Là Tư Tế, Đức Giê-su tự hiến cho không mạng sống mình là “Chiên Thiên Chúa” hiến tế. 2) Là Ngôn Sứ, Đức Giê-su là vị thầy vĩ đại nhất cho Sự Thật, vì chính Ngài là sự thật. 3) Là Vương Đế, Đức Giê-su là

“Đấng Cứu Độ” hằng chờ mong, Ngài đến để giải thoát chúng ta.

Sứ vụ ba phần này của Đức Ki-tô là sứ vụ của Hội Thánh. Vì vậy, chúng ta thấy sự gắn bó giữa tên của Thánh Phê-rô với những tên của Đức Giê-su trong vài câu mở đầu của Phúc Âm Thánh Gio-an.
