Within scope,
without surprises
Number of dollars and days Toronto’s York University Research Tower ran over budget and schedule—another project we helped a client deliver to a predictable outcome.
Projects, when successfully delivered,
can strengthen your organization
and the communities you serve.
However, we all know that projects
can be full of surprises—escalating
costs, schedule delays, scope creep,
or worse. But what if your project
Our community of program and project management specialists is passionate about achieving predictable project outcomes for our clients. By taking on projects as if they were our own, our business, technical, and project management experts work with you to strategize, plan, and implement projects that help you achieve your organization’s objectives.
Our award-winning team has managed thousands of projects across all sectors— buildings like hospitals, airports, and entire university campuses; critical infrastructure such as mass transit and water treatment facilities; energy and resource assignments that include mines and wind farms. We know from experience that delivering a complex project without surprises doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges. But our creative approaches to strategy, planning, and controls can head off most problems and provide early warnings on the rest, meaning you can manage with confidence and without crisis.

Program and project strategy services
Our project strategy services help turn your business objectives into a business case that your board or senior leaders can approve. We start by addressing the fundamental question to your success: Is this the right project? Answering this question might require market and funding research, preliminary scoping, or feasibility studies. You may need to align stakeholders around a project’s expectations or determine its optimum delivery strategy. Perhaps you have to establish a project governance structure that supports timely and informed decision-making and provides real leadership. Or you might want to analyze risks and figure out the best way to manage them. Whatever the case, we can help you determine the project or program that best aligns with your business objectives.

Integrated planning services
Winston Churchill said, “He who fails to plan is planning to fail.” Not on our watch! Once you have the right project approved, we can help you develop a project plan that will lay the foundation for success. We use a project chartering process that aligns project stakeholders to the primary project driver—typically one of cost, schedule, or scope. Our plans integrate budget, schedule, and scope and, through scope definition and work-breakdown structures, we detail everything that needs to be done and clearly identify who’s responsible for what. We help you assess project risks and determine how they’ll be managed, and we establish strategies for regulatory approvals and contracting for procurement and construction.
Our integrated project plans also include an approach to scope control based on a clear project definition and front-end planning using stage gates. This way, you can implement your project feeling confident that your plan will help to keep your project both on track and aligned with your business objectives.
The right plan
A Construction Industry Institute study of 609 projects valued at over $35 billion showed that front-end planning resulted in an average of ten percent lower costs, seven percent shorter schedules, and five percent fewer changes.

Program and project controls services
From planning through to project implementation, our controls services let you stay on top of scope, cost, schedule, changes, contingency, and workflow. They help you manage planning, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. They provide predictive cost forecasting and trending. And they help you monitor and manage risk, all with the help of project management systems and processes chosen to meet your specific needs. This way, if challenges do arise, you can make timely and informed decisions about what to do. But don’t ask us. Ask our client, Janice Oliver, the now-retired executive director of the Canadian Opera House Corporation: “Stantec’s project controls processes enabled us to see at all times where we were and where we were going.”

Forming a project community
Every client is different, but all client relationships share one thing in common. They’re built on trust. That’s why we often start with a small assignment—such as reviewing your management processes and capabilities, completing a business case, or conducting a health check on a project that’s underway. Once we establish some trust, we can scale our involvement up or down throughout the project life cycle, depending on your needs. From business and project strategists to planners, schedulers, and cost controllers to full-on program and project leaders, our specialists can help you with all your project management needs. We can also tap into Stantec’s network of technical, design, and scientific experts for advice. Whatever the extent of our involvement, we strive to contribute to a project community that is committed to achieving a predictable project outcome.
