DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to serve as a solid foundation for the study of the Physical Sciences. Topics to be investigated are phases of matter/ atomic structure, force and motion, work, simple machines, conservation and transformation of energy, heat, waves, sound, light, electricity and magnetism.
The role of the student in this course is to develop inquiry and problem solving skills within the context of scientific investigation. Students will apply what they learn to everyday situations by conducting investigations and formulating and testing their own hypotheses.
Organization:
This is a lecture-laboratory course in which topics are presented by the instructor. It also involves group activities and cooperative learning. The classroom lecture is primarily power point presentations with discussions, questions and answers, and student classroom work. Laboratory investigations will be conducted at appropriate intervals. You will need one three ring binder for classroom notes and lab. Bring it to class each day. I prefer pens, no pencils allowed.
Texts:(subject to change)
A textbook will be issued to a student upon request when available.
**Reading from the text is considered supplemental study. Students can achieve the highest level of success by attending class, taking notes, participating in lab activities, and diligent study of their notes for understanding.**
Tests/quizzes:
Tests will be given at appropriate intervals. Every test could be comprehensive.
Laboratory:
Laboratory will occur at appropriate intervals. The concepts that you learn will be applied to the classroom and major tests. It will be necessary for you to roll up your sleeves and get “dirty” in the lab in order to be successful on major tests. All lab safety guidelines will be strictly enforced. Classroom concepts will be reinforced in the laboratory and the student will be held responsible for all content. Laboratories and group activities are not social functions. Failure to remain focused and on task will result in forfeiture of the lab. Failure to clean work area, and return equipment and supplies to their proper place will result in forfeiture of labs.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY:
If you miss a class period (excused or unexcused), it is your responsibility to get any notes that you missed from a classmate or from my website. It is your responsibility to ask for any homework missed. If you miss a quiz and your absence is excused, the score will not be counted against you. There is no make-up of quizzes. If you do not
understand a concept, it is your responsibility to approach me for extra help. I am available for tutoring each day during lunch if it is required. If you are failing and not doing everything that you are supposed to be doing; take responsibility and don’t lay the blame anywhere else!
EACH DAY
COME TO CLASS EACH DAY
BRING YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK AND A PEN EACH DAY
BRING A CURIOUS AND QUESTIONING ATTITUDE EACH DAY
BRING A RESPECTFUL ATTITUDE EACH DAY

Code of conduct:
1) Academic and behavioral excellence is expected and will be nurtured at all times. 2) Be courteous and respectful.
3) Enter the classroom quietly and take your assigned seat before the tardy bell rings. Immediately get your science notebook and pen out and be ready to begin class. 4) The bell doesn’t dismiss the class, I do. Place your chair under your table when dismissed.
5) No gum, food, or drink in class. Take care of your personal and bathroom business before class begins.
6) Stay focused and on task. You cannot sleep in my classroom.
7) Follow lab instructions, be curious, do your part, clean and put all equipment away. *STUDENTS ELECTRONIC DEVICES WHICH INCLUDE TABLETS, PADS, PODS, AND PHONES MUST BE PUT AWAY WHEN ENTERING THE CLASSROOM EACH DAY AND REMOVED WITH PERMISSION ONLY.
A SCIENCE NOTEBOOK IS REQUIRED FOR MY CLASS. THIS MEANS A SINGLE NOTEBOOK DEDICATED TO SCIENCE LECTURE AND LABORATORY ONLY. THE NOTEBOOK MUST BE A THREE RING BINDER THAT ALLOWS PAPERS TO BE PLACED OR REMOVED.
FAILURE TO CONFORM TO MY CLASSROOM CODE OF CONDUCT WILL RESULT IN FORMAL WRITE-UPS. THIS IS MY CLASSROOM; YOU ARE ONLY A GUEST IN IT.
You don’t come to my classroom to sit and do nothing. You don’t come to my
