Add or subtract.

YOU TRY: WORK AREA

1

1 year 7 months - 8 months = years months

2

5 months + 10 months = years months

3

5 weeks 5 days - 5 weeks = weeks days

4

4 years 3 months + 4 years 6 months = years months

5

2 years 8 months + 2 years 7 months = years months

6

5 days + 8 days = week days

7

6 weeks 3 days - 4 weeks 3 days = weeks days

Core Standards: 4.MD.1 - 4 MD.2 4

In order to add or subtract units of time, you must first convert the unlike units so that all the

data is same unit of time. For example, if you have to add 3 weeks + 2 months, convert the

2 month unit into weeks.

1. 3 weeks + 2 months = ?

converting seconds, minutes, hours

Add or subtract.

YOU TRY: WORK AREA

1

5 hours 17 minutes - 3 hours 5 minutes = hours minutes

2

20 minutes + 55 minutes = hour minutes

3

3 hours 50 minutes + 1 hour 35 minutes = hours minutes

4

4 hours 30 minutes - 55 minutes = hours minutes

5

2 hours 15 minutes - 1 hour 55 minutes = hours minutes

6

17 seconds + 45 seconds = minutes seconds

7

24 minutes + 48 minutes = hours minutes

Core Standards: 4.MD.1 - 4 MD.2 6

Considering there are 60 minutes in 1 hour, when adding or subtracting time, you must do

the following. If you have to add 37 minutes + 2 hours 40 minutes, add the minutes first.

1. 37 minutes + 40 minutes = 77 minutes

2. Since there are 60 minutes in 1 hour, subtract 77 minutes - 60 minutes to get 17 minutes.

3. Take the 1 hour and add that to the 2 hours in the original addition statement.

(7)

Complete the table by writing the time shown on the clocks and filling in the elapsed time.

(9)

temperature

Temperature

is measured using an instrument called a thermometer. Fahrenheit and Celsius degrees

are units of temperature scales, which basically measure how hot something is. Both measure in

increments called degrees, but the degrees are not the same size on both scales.

length

. There are several

customary units used to measure length including inches, feet, yards, and miles.

converting inches, feet, yards

When converting from one unit to another, remember

this rule:

1. Converting from a larger unit to a smaller

unit:

Multiply

Example 1:

How many feet are in 18 yards?

Converting from larger units to smaller units - Multiply

18 yards = _____ feet

1 yard = 3 feet. Therefore, a yard is larger than a foot.

18 x 3 = 54

Answer: Therefore, 18 yards = 54 feet
