Every school in California is required by st at e law t o publish a School Account abilit y Report Card (SARC), by February 1 of each year. T he SARC cont ains informat ion about t he condit ion and performance of each California public school. W hen major cut s w ere being made t o art s educat ion in t he mid -1980’s, several Los Angeles leaders had t he vision t o found a specialized public high school t hat w ould be t he t raining ground for t he region’s most promising young art ist s. More t hat 20 years lat er, t he aw ard-w inning Los Angeles Count y High School for t he Art s cont inues t o nurt ure and challenge our most creat ive and t alent ed you minds.

Our t uit ion-free school offers conservat ory – st yle t raining in t he visual and performing art s along w it h college- preparat ory academic inst ruct ion. W hile admission t o LACHSA is a compet it ive process, formal t raining in t he art s is not necessarily required. T he school’s demanding full-day program is one in w hich passion; hard w ork and dedicat ion are definit ely prerequisit e.

Overview :

T he Los Angeles Count y High School for t he Art s (LACHSA) offers a specialized program combining college-preparat ory academic inst ruct ion and conservat ory-st yle t raining in t he visual and performing art s. Founded in 1985, t he t uit ion-free public school is run by t he Los Angeles Count y Office of Educat ion in part nership w it h and on t he campus of California St at e Universit y, Los Angeles (CSULA).

Recognized as one of t he premier public art s high school in t he U.S., LACHSA is t he recipient of numerous aw ards, t hese include California Dist inguished School for Academic Excellence, Golden Bell Aw ard, Grammy Signat ure School, Bravo Aw ard for excellence in art s educat ion and t he Exemplary School Designat ion by t he Art s Schools Net w ork.

LACHSA is also rout inely ident ified as one of "America's Best High Schools" by New sw eek Magazine and one LA's best high schools by Los Angeles Magazine.

T he school serves 600 cult urally and socioeconomically diverse t eens from more t han 80 school dist rict s in t he count y. Prospect ive st udent s must meet minimum academic, at t endance and behavior st andards, and must audit ion for accept ance int o one of five depart ment s: Cinemat ic Art s, Dance, Music (vocal and inst rument al), T heat re, or Visual Art s. Each depart ment select s it s ow n st udent s t hrough a juried audit ion or port folio review process. Once admit t ed, st udent s can audit ion t o dual-major in Musical T heat re product ions.

LACHSA is a model small learning communit y fully int egrat ed w it hin t he campus of CSULA, offering st udent s a direct connect ion t o higher educat ion. More t han 95% of graduat es mat riculat e t o college and many are recruit ed w it h scholarships t o t he w orld's finest inst it ut ions.

T he non-profit Los Angeles Count y High School for t he Art s Foundat ion raises funds t o support t he conservat ory-st yle art s t raining offered t o st udent s free of charge. Each year, t he Foundat ion w orks t o bridge t he gap bet w een available st at e funding and t he act ual cost of t he art s programs by cult ivat ing and solicit ing gift s from individuals, foundat ions and corporat ions.

LACHSA is fully int egrat ed on t he campus of CAL St at e - L.A. LACHSA uses universit y facilit ies for all classroom inst ruct ion, administ rat ive offices, rehearsals and ot her act ivit ies.

CSLA is responsible for maint enance and upkeep of facilit ies. Facilit ies are cleaned on a regular basis. T he universit y addresses LACHSA’s facilit ies concerns as t hey arise in as t imely a manner as possible and coordinat es all inspect ions.

LACHSA has been a part of t he CSLA campus for t he past 27 years. As part of a lease agreement bet w een t he universit y and LACOE.

LACOE broke ground on a new building in February 2011. T he new facilit y dedicat ed t o LACHSA is scheduled t o open in March 2013. W e are in t he midst of t ransit ioning int o our new building.

LACOE Educat ional Programs and Human Resource Service have collaborat ively est ablished crit eria and processes t o ensure t hat t eachers are highly qualified as required by t he federal No Child Left Behind Act . Addit ionally, Educat ional Programs and HRS collaborat e in support ing new t eachers t hrough t he pre-int ern and Beginning T eacher Support Assessment (BT SA) program.
