Case no. 1

Thermometer

Equipment needed: 1 glass tube, 1 rubber bung with a small hole in it, 1 test tube. Completely fi ll up a test tube with water. Put a glass tube inside the hole in the rubber bung. Plug the test tube with the rubber bung. On the glass tube, mark the water level at the beginning. Hold both hands tightly around the test tube for 5 minutes. Be careful not to touch the rubber bung. What has happened to the water level in the glass tube? Colour the drawings below:

Cut a hot-air mobile

On a piece of paper draw a line around the rim of a small saucer. Cut a 2 cm. thick spiral inside the drawn circle to make the circle look like a screw (see the enclosed model). Fold the centre of the spiral 4 times to make a point in the paper. Place a pencil in a small piece of clay, plasticine or a ½ potato. Hang the spiral on the point of the pencil.

Place the arrangement above a source of warm air. What happens?

Light contains energy

Fill 2 plastic bags with 100 grams of water. Seal the bags to prevent the water from running out. Use tape to attach one plastic bag to a white piece of paper and another to a black piece of paper. Leave both bags with the paper hanging in the same position in direct sunlight (or under a hot lamp) for 15 minutes. If a lamp is used, the distance from the lamp to the bags should be approximately 50 cm.

100 g of water = 100 ml of water = 1 dl of water. Measure the water temperature in both bags.

Heat can move

Put different materials on a table: For instance 1 piece of cloth, 1 piece of wood, 1 piece of expanded polystyrene, 1 piece of metal (a box), and 1 glass plate. Leave all materials untouched on the table for a couple of minutes. Put one hand on one material and the other hand on another material. Count to ten. Which material is cold and which is warm?

When ice melts

An ice cube put on a saucer in the classroom will melt to water. Place an ice cube in a plastic bag and seal the bag completely! Can you make an ice cube melt quickly?
