The Bachelor of Information Technology (Professional Practice) combines study with a year of work experience in a Fortune 500 company – previously these have included IBM, Westpac, CBA, ANZ and Allianz. Students earn a minimum of $35,500 as they study as well as obtaining priceless work experience. This is quite literally the University’s ‘learn to succeed’ motto at work.
The Faculty of Science and Technology is proud of its strong relationship with IBM – in fact much of IBM’s Ballarat workforce comprises either graduates or students of the University. The Bachelor of IT (Professional Practice) is an excellent example of a work integrated study program. IBM offers students a minimum of $35,500 across the four years and all graduates are considered for a position at IBM upon successful completion provided they meet graduate employment criteria. The Faculty of Science and
Technology plays an important role in providing a skilled workforce to IBM.

I studied IT in South Africa but before I could complete it we immigrated. Once I received my citizenship, decided to take advantage of the opportunity to finish my studies.
Ballarat became my logical choice since IBM is closely affiliated with Federation University (at that stage, it was University of Ballarat). Since IBM is an international name and well known, it became one of my key focus points to work for IBM.
My first year, I was registered in the Software Engineering major as my aim was to become an application developer. Half way through the year, I found out about the Professional Practice degree, and I decided to apply. After my interview I was accepted into the program.
The aspect of working at IBM that I enjoy the most is that I can apply the subjects I study at Federation University in my everyday work and vice versa. It also gives me the opportunity to experience the IT work environment and make the required contact I will need once I have finalized my studies. Through my work with IBM, I have learnt how to create a professional working environment, interact with co-workers and to have pride in the work I create and do. I have the opportunity to be creative, technical as well as express my knowledge, views, and passion in my area of work.
The scholarship has been important to me because it gave the opportunity to gain experience and apply my studies in the working environment. It also gives the added benefit of monetary relief while experiencing your future career path.
Personally, I can find no negative aspects in being in the Professional Practice course, only positives. It gives you the opportunity to be in the work force in the area you study and love. You gain experience and opportunities to further your career as well as broaden your knowledge.

(Software
Engineering)
Engineer the software products of the future from the smallest
apps to the largest most bullet proof systems for secure
financial systems or large event management.
This program aims to provide students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and values to be effective in creating high quality software in a controlled and cost efficient manner. This program contains many programming and software engineering subjects that will enable students to get work in either field.
There are also a number of electives that will enable students to either add depth or breadth to their studies. The material covered throughout the subjects in this program reflects the current and future needs of practicing software engineers. In particular, students will be able to apply their skills with two subjects dedicated to a real life project. For the non-project subjects, students will also be exposed to a large number of case studies from industry.
Students will cover object oriented analysis and design in depth rather than covering an overview of many methodologies. This will provide them with a very marketable skill as well as being exposed to other techniques.
Industry experience
During third year you will be able to apply and extend your skills via a major real life project, where you will work with a client, creating software specifically designed and developed to meet their needs. Undertaking an industry based course during your studies will help you build a bridge between your theoretical and practical skills. It enables you to apply knowledge and skills acquired throughout your studies in a real world environment.
