We have started an employee appreciation program to recognize our team members who go out of their way to improve the lives of our residents and make positive impacts on our community. This “Hermitage

Hero” program allows residents, families, and team members to nominate whoever they feel is truly making a difference here at Hermitage Roanoke. Each

month, we will select a “Hero of the Month” who will ultimately be eligible to win the “Hero of the Year” award each August. Nomination forms will be placed around the community, but anyone can call the front

desk to nominate someone that deserves to be recognized. We hope that this new program will show our dedicated team members how thankful we are for

their hard work, especially during this pandemic. December's Hero was Vicky Williams from our Nursing

Department! Vicky has worked at Hermitage Roanoke for 8 years now and has 20 years of CNA experience! Vicky is always willing to help others and has a good attitude while doing so. She takes it upon herself to go the extra mile for our residents and is always attentive to their needs. We are incredibly lucky to have Vicky at Hermitage Roanoke! Thank you for all that you do!

GREETINGS!

HERMITAGE HERO

January 2021

I’m sure many of us are ready to close the books on 2020 and welcome in a new year. The good news is that COVID-19 vaccinations are right around the corner and we will hopefully see things return to normal in the near future. Having said that, we are still able to find the many positives we experienced as a community over the last 12 months.

Renovations were completed in several of the community’s common

areas like the dining room, rotunda, and hallways. We also welcomed many new team members who have

already made great contributions. New residents joined us as well and

have become a part of our Hermitage family. When we look

back at 2020, it will certainly be difficult to not remember the pandemic and the hardships we

experienced here and in our surrounding community. However,

don’t overlook the great moments we experienced. Here’s to a great 2021. Thank you for being a part of

our family and Happy New Year!

A “Good Samaritan” has come to mean any person who helps another without thought or reward. Yet there are many other ways of being a Good Samaritan – a person who is

generous and compassionate in helping others: offering a helping hand and being a supporter, an advocate, and a protector are just a few descriptions that come to mind. At

the heart of the mission of Pinnacle Living is the Samaritan Program, a benevolent fund which provides financial assistance to residents who have outlived their monetary resources and, through no fault of their own, can no longer afford the full cost of services.

Benevolent assistance through this program has been given in Pinnacle Living

communities since 1948. Your gift to the Samaritan Program supports residents who have been blessed by longevity but have outlived their financial resources. Samaritan gifts are not used for operational, capital, or administrative cost but are instead made available only

for benevolent care. Your gift ensures someone’s personal security and peace of mind. Samaritan Program gifts may be designated to any of our Pinnacle Living communities.

Undesignated gifts will be used where the need is greatest. Both designated and undesignated gifts serve the same purpose: to provide financial assistance to residents whose ability to pay for care has been diminished. Please consider making a gift today to

help those who are in need of your generosity. You truly can make a difference in someone’s life. To make an online gift to the Samaritan Program by credit or debit card, visit the Pinnacle Living website at www.pinnacleliving.org, our community website or the

Facebook pages for Pinnacle Living or our community. Checks may be delivered to the Business Office. Make the check payable to Pinnacle Living or to Hermitage Roanoke.

Please note “Samaritan Program” in the memo line and designate the gift to the community or where the need is greatest.

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. - John 1:5

This timeless verse from the Gospel of John brings to us the good news that Light – the Light of Love – shines, always, and nothing can overcome it. How is this Light present in your life?

What kind of light are you meant to be in this world? What kind of light can you provide today? As we enter this long-awaited new year, we also enter the season of Epiphany, known as the season of Light. Light makes a way in darkness. Light reveals what is yet unknown. Light

brings hope and encouragement. Light makes a way out of no way. Light helps us discern what is within us. Light shines upon in, in us and through us. What kind of light are you meant

to be in this world? What kind of light can you provide today? May this poem, written by Mary Oliver, provide some insights:

When I am among the trees,

especially the willows and the honey locust, equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,

they give off such hints of gladness.

I would almost say that they save me, and daily. I am so distant from the hope of myself, in which I have goodness, and discernment,

and never hurry through the world but walk slowly, and bow often. Around me the trees stir in their leaves

and call out, “Stay awhile.” The light flows from their branches. And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,

“and you too have come

into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine.”

As we enter this new year, remember that you are light and you are meant to shine. Shine brightly. Shine boldly. Shine lovingly.

THANK YOU ANN!

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS

We didn't know we had such a good WRAPPER in our midst!

Thank you, Ann Holloman, for wrapping all the presents for our Team Members. You did a wonderful job and everyone is

most appreciative of your hard work.

Family visits are back to being held in the Florida Room. Visits are available daily, both morning and afternoon. We do limit your visits to 30 minutes and, of

course, there can be no hand holding or touching of any kind. We are also

now limiting visits to one family at a time due to noise. Please wear a mask

when you come, walk across the front of the main building, around the side to get your temperature taken and answer a few questions prior to your visit. We

are now requireing families to wear their masks during the entirety of the visit. Please call 767-6800 to schedule

an appointment.

Dear residents and family members of Hermitage Roanoke,

As in years past, I have been selected to acknowledge with sincere appreciation your monetary gifts in appreciation of all our team members’ talents throughout the past year. I,

myself, will soon celebrate my five-year anniversary with Hermitage Roanoke and I cannot think of a better place to work; one in which I am able to share my personal gifts and talents.

On behalf of all my co-workers, we want you to know that we do, indeed, choose to work in this community, your home. We strive to meet your every need but also enjoy getting to know

each and every one of you and look forward to the day we can see and talk with your families again and meet new family members of those of you new to our community.

We all feel like family here and, during this pandemic, we have literally had to rely on each other and be more of a family than usual. You all make it easy! We truly appreciate all of you for your cards, calls, and cash! You know what they say, it takes a village. Hermitage Roanoke

is certainly a village like no other. Thank You from all of us! Beth Hathaway

ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Everyone please welcome our new Lifestyles and Wellness Assistant, Bobi Arnold! I was born in Philadelphia, PA and moved to Southern California when I was 3. My father managed country clubs, and in CA he managed Woodland Hills and Indian Wells.

When I was a teenager my family moved to Pompano Beach, FL and then soon after that they moved to Charlotte, NC. After high school my father accepted a manager position with Hidden Valley Country Club here in Roanoke! I worked for Dr. Ron Blum,

an inventor, for over 10 years, and I alos worked at Brandon Oaks for 4 years. I loved working there and I'm very happy to be back working in a similar role here at Hermitage! I was married for 20 years to the late John Arnold, Esq. We have a beautiful

daughter who is a licensed aesthetician and is working on her license for permanent makeup tattooing. I also have a 7 year old grandson named Oliver, who is the love of

my life--he can do no wrong in grandma's eyes! For fun I like to hike, read and do geneology. I have discovered so many interesteing ancestors that I never knew about! My mother is 87 years old and lives here in Roanoke, my father lived to be 89 years old

and my older brother Jay lives in Jacksonville, FL.

There is unbelievable power in little things. Look at coronavirus. It is smaller than a little piece of dust, but it has brought the world’s most powerful nation to its knees. America is

big and strong, but a little bitty virus has created havoc with our health, our lifestyles, our finances, our work habits. Think about it – one little virus started all of that. Little things mean a lot. One small, tiny pebble that gets inside your shoe can make walking very uncomfortable. Today, one little bit of encouragement, an offer to help in a tough situation,

a small gift, a small gesture of civility, a small loving attitude – think what these can do. As we enter a new year, resolve to make a difference – gift your community Samaritan Program with a contribution; put your community in your planned estate giving; and participate in your community donor restricted funds. If you would like to know more ways

in which you can make a difference, contact Charles Wickham, Director of Donor Development, by email at cwickham@pinnacleliving.org or by phone at 804-474-8724.
