On What Shall We Stand?

October is a good month to be a Lutheran. For it was during this month, on the eve of All Saints day 1517 that one Martin Luther hung 95 thesis on the door of the Castle Church at Wittenberg. This event began what would be the Reformation, an event of such importance that it would impact the world theologically, culturally, politically, economically, and change it in ways that the young re-former could never have imagined. Some would say that the foundations of democracy were laid long ago during the days of the Reformation.

I wonder what Luther would say if we were to credit him with such a huge impact on all of our lives. I suspect he would probably rant and rave, and become angry at the idea that one man should re-ceive credit for that which only God could bring about. It is likely that he would direct us to the Word of God, slap a Bible in our hands and write the 3 Solas (Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone!) on our foreheads with a big black permanent marker. I suspect that he would want us to know that the reformation didn’t begin with the hanging of the 95 Thesis, but with the hanging of our Lord, and the empty tome. I suspect he would want us to know that he wasn’t some sort of the-ological super-hero, but a servant of the Lord God who “Unless...convinced with evidence from the Holy Scriptures or with open, clear, and distinct grounds and reasoning...” could not and would not recant. There he stood, he could do no other.

The bottom line is this, the Reformation happened because sinful men traded authority for power, and walked away from the pure teachings of Jesus Christ. You and I often do the same thing. Though we have the Gospel in its purity and are assured of forgiveness because of the victory that Christ won for us on the cross, we trade his authority over death and the grave for a license to sin. What we need is a Reformation!

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord we have it!

In Baptism our Lord washed away our sin. Everyday we wake up bran new! So shall we return once again to the filth and mud of yesterday? By no means! We died to sin, how then can we live in it? Living in the Reformation means casting aside our former way of life and striving to live differ-ently.

How can we do such a thing??? By being soundly, openly, and clearly convinced with evidence from Holy Scripture that even today we can live a new life.

We had a great time at our “Gangway to Gali-lee” Rally Day. A big thanks to Katie Rander-mann for leading the children's songs and to our Board of Education Director Dennis Mu-rawski for a wonderful lesson. Our Sunday School Children enjoyed the snacks and the crafts too. Remember our message in a bottle: Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

Pastor Mark presented Children's Bibles to the children who were moving up to another class. Our fall Sunday School “Growing In Christ” is starting with the Old Testament story of The Creation. Sunday School is at 10:00 am every Sunday except when we have one service. Our preschool and elementary school children sing Christian songs together the first 10 minutes of Sunday School. They will sing “Jesus Rescues Me” at the 10:30 am Blended Worship Service on Oct. 5th. We are looking forward to all our children singing this special song.

Dennis Murawski is teaching the Confirmation Class Old Testament lessons for students grades 5 through 7 every Sunday morning. Pastor Mark's 8th Graders Confirmation class meets every Monday evening at 6 pm at Con-cordia. Parents, please bring your children to Sunday School and Confirmation Class.

Trunk or Treat will be held at Concordia from 4 pm until 6 pm on Sunday, October 26th. We encourage our children and their friends to at-tend and wear a costume. It should be a fun time of fellowship.
