COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIRS

Men=s Health Fairs

$ Held 1995 - 1999 for county industrial workers. $ Focused on prostate and cardiovascular screening. $ Provided patient education concerning risk factors.

Senior Health Fairs $ Held 1997 - 1999.

$ Focused on cardiovascular, cholesterol, glucose, skin cancer, vision, and mobility screening. $ Free flu shots are given.

$ Provided patient education on nutrition, dental hygiene, Hospice, home safety & Medicare Managed Care.

Spring Fling Health Fair

$ Held annually from 1996-1998.

$ Variety of health screening that included cancer risk, cardiovascular disease, vision, and hearing.

Women=s Health Fairs $ Held since 1998 - 2000.

$ Focused on cardiovascular, breast, and cervical cancer.

$ Provided patient education on nutrition, breast cancer, domestic violence and other women health issues.

Fall Health Fair $ Held 2002

$ Focused on exercise, nutrition, obesity, blood pressure and smoking cessation. $ Provided patient education on health issues.

SCHOOL HEALTH

$ Spring of 1994, students held a health fair with screening at Rogersville City School. Determined that 30% of children were 1 standard deviation over the norm on weight and height ratio. Indicators of caloric overload due to drinks and snack food. 25% reported no regular exercise. (130 children K-8)

$ Students designed and implemented an exercise/fitness program for 5th and 6th grade students at Rogersville City School. At total of 76 children were screened for exercise habits and knowledge. Heights and weight measurements as well as pulse rates and blood pressures were recorded. A six week intervention was piloted with improvements noted in knowledge and attitude but not in behavior as reflected by improvements in pulse and blood pressure. $ Fall of 1995, students provided nutrition education to kindergartners at Rogersville City

School. This educational intervention was based on school health fair held in Spring 1994. $ Spring of 1996, students provided smoking prevention education to 3rd grade students at

Rogersville City School. This educational intervention was based on school health fair held in Spring 1994.

$ Spring of 1997, Hawkins County Schools invited students to provide education to children at Rogersville Middle School. Education focused on cardiovascular and fitness.

$ Since 1995, Community Partnership students have been assisting Hawkins County School nurses in performing state required screening such as height, weight, blood pressure, vision and hearing.

$ Fall of 1998, students held a School Health Fair at Hawkins County Elementary, Keplar Elementary and St. Clair Elementary schools (1,300 children K-5).

$ Spring of 1999, Church Hill Middle School invited Kellogg students to provide health

screening at a health fair sponsored by the school. Third year medical students screened over 200 children for height, weight, blood pressure, vision and Scoliosis.

$ Fall of 1999, second year Kellogg students screened approximately 615 children at Rogersville City School. The children were screened for height, weight, blood pressure, vision and Scoliosis. The data collected will be analyzed and the students will determine an intervention/prevention program for the school.

$ Spring of 2000, Dr. Chris Calendine (Entering Class of 1993 & graduate of Hawkins County Community Partnership Program) assisted with followup screening of 65 Rogersville City School students who were screened with high blood pressure during the Fall 1999

$ Spring of 2001, Kit Dulin (MPH student and graduate of Hawkins County Community Partnership Program) and second year students with the assistance of Amy Lipe, Hawkins County Schools Health Educator, in screening children for height, weight, blood pressure, vision and Scoliosis.

$ Fall of 2002, second year students provided screenings for height, weight, blood pressure, and vision for 104 students at Saint Clair Elementary School.

MISCELLANEOUS COMMUNITY PROJECTS

$ Summer of 1997, Cheri Jackson, Public Health student, provided women=s health materials for 60 women in a summer camp. This was in conjunction with Judy Craven=s extension program.

$ Fall 1997 - Spring 1999, the first edition of the Health and Human Services Directory for Hawkins County was created, printed, and distributed to county health care providers. This project stemmed from a need that was identified by the Hawkins County Stake Holder Survey that was completed Spring of 1997.

$ Spring of 1998, students determined a need for a comprehensive school health curriculum. They evaluated and recommended improvements to an existing curriculum.

Recommendations for comprehensive school health development was made at the State level. State actions resulted in the development of a model request for proposal which addressed all of the issues raised during the initial investigation.

$ Summer of 1998, third year medical students worked with the Hawkins County Health Department and local racoon hunting clubs to educate the public about rabies outbreak through pamphlets and a free rabies clinic.

$ Spring of 1999, students coordinated two major events in conjunction with Spring Fling: 1) Bicycle Safety Education and 2) Bicycle Rodeo for school aged children. A total of 67 children from the county received educational material on bicycle safety.

$ Spring of 1999, a second year nursing student and a graduate public health student

participated in Career Day for 6th graders at Surgoinsville Middle School. They presented to three classes on various jobs in the medical field. Their primary goal was to encourage the students to look into the Rural Track Program at ETSU.

$ Fall 1999 - Spring 2000, third year nursing students as part of their community project worked with the Hawkins County Health Council and Tobacco Grant Committee in implementing the TarWars7 curriculum in all county 5th grade classrooms.

$ Spring of 2000, second year students wrote two grants on identified adolescent health issues. $ Spring of 2003, students reviewed and updated AHawkins County Guide to Health Services -

HEALTH & SAFETY SURVEYS

$ Adult Health Needs Assessment - 1994 to 1995. Assessment of working adults at Dodge Reliance and Hawkins County School System. A total of 470 persons were screened and completed the CDC Risk Profile. The prime findings were that 29% were overweight and 15% reported high blood pressure. Behavioral risks included smoking (54%) and not aerobic form of regular exercises. Started fall of 1994, completed 1995.

$ Farm Safety Survey - 1994 & 1996. Randomly selected farmers were interviewed to determine prevalence of injury during previous 12 months. Reported injuries were

incorporated as prevention issues in two agricultural health and safety fairs. Currently a third survey is being conducted.

$ Hawkins County Stake Holder Survey & University of Tennessee Behavioral Risk Survey - 1997. Students interviewed 110 randomly selected residents for utilization patterns and opinions concerning Hawkins County health care.

$ Leadership Profile - Spring 2000. First year students conducted a county wide leadership profile.

$ Leadership Profile - Spring 2001. First year students conducted a county wide leadership survey.

$ Leadership Profile - Spring 2002. First year students conducted a county wide leadership survey.

ETSU HAWKINS COUNTY HEALTH CARE CENTER

ETSU Hawkins County Health Care Center opened for practice in 1994. Current medical providers are Drs. Mark Dalle-Ave and Jose Velasco. They see approximately 950 patients per month. This patient load includes nursing home and VA patients. Some services the clinic and doctors provide to the community are:

$ Contract with Veteran=s Affairs to see VA patients.

$ Dr. Velasco is medical director of Heritage Manor Nursing Home. $ Dr. Dalle-Ave is the sports doctor for Cherokee High School Athletics.

$ Provide sports physicals for Cherokee and Clinch High Schools.

$ Training facility for medical residents, nurse practitioner, medical and nursing students. $ Location for all ETSU Hawkins County Kellogg health fairs.
