~~ February 14, 2021 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners:

This second Sunday of

February each year is designated

World Marriage Sunday, when

we are asked to pray in a special way for married

couples to be strengthened in holiness in order to

build up the Body of Christ and form the Domestic

Church where Christ is at the center of their family

life. It is in the family where the ways of God are

first taught, where children first learn what it is to be

loved and how to love – to love God and to love

others, to be self-giving and not self-ish. We need to

pray for the strength and holiness of our families, for

as Saint John Paul II put it: “The future of our world

passes through the family.”

Lent is an opportune time for strengthening

our families in holiness. Indeed Lent is such a

blessed time for the spiritual renewal of our families,

of the family of the church, and of our own hearts

and souls. We are about to enter into the holy

season of Lent on Ash Wednesday this week.

We will hear from the Prophet Joel in the

Liturgy of Ash Wednesday this week the call Lent

makes to each one of us: “Return to the Lord your

God with all you heart.” As we approach to receive

the ashes on our foreheads this Wednesday, we may

hear the words: “Remember that you are dust and to

dust you shall return.” We are reminded that we are

mortal, that we are sinners, and that we need God.

We may also hear the words: “Repent and believe in

the Gospel.” On the first day of Lent the Word of

God calls us to conversion – to turn away from sin

and to return to the Lord with all our hearts.

Lent is the time to get back to the basics, to

the fundamentals of the spiritual life. Just like an

athlete needs to sacrifice much and do a lot physical

training to compete well, so too, do we need to

sacrifice much and do a lot of spiritual training in

order to compete well in the spiritual battle we are

all engaged in. In the Gospel of Ash Wednesday

from Saint Matthew, Jesus lays out for us the

program for that spiritual training to strengthen us

against our tendency toward sin and to turn back to

God with all our hearts: Prayer, Fasting, and Alms

Giving.

Prayer: There is no better sacrifice I can

make than the sacrifice of my time for prayer,

dedicating some time every day to spend with the

Lord, speaking with Him, and even more

importantly listening to Him. Fasting: There is no

better way to reverse my tendency toward

self-indulgence than fasting, for when I deny myself

something that gives me pleasure, I am

strengthening my will to say “No” to myself and

“Yes” to God. Alms Giving: Finally, there is no

better way to reverse my tendency toward

selfishness than alms giving. That is, putting the

needs of others before my own by doing acts of

charity and giving generously to those in need.

Prayer, Fasting, and Alms Giving are the

best exercises for getting back into spiritual shape.

That is, putting things back in the right order: God

first, then others, and myself last. May this Lent be

a moment of Grace for all of us, and may we arrive

at Easter with hearts and minds much more in tune

with the heart and mind of Jesus. May God bless us

all.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Matthew J. Furey

has made clear, it is the fact that our

world is in need of missionary disciples.

This discipleship begins with a Catholic

education and is nurtured through a

lifetime of formation and conversion.

offices of the Archdiocese of New York,

are committed to this work of
