Confession is like going to a dentist

This Advent is a time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

We pray that you will take advantage of attending one of the

reconciliation services listed on page 2.

Why go to confession?

Avoiding tooth decay requires a few things; brushing and flossing

at least two times a day, visiting a dental hygenist 2-4 times per

year, and having a full check-up at least once a year.

Avoiding soul decay requires a few thing: making an examination

of conscience daily with some prayer of contrition, attending a

reconciliation service in Lent or Advent and/or Saturday confessions

at least 2-4 times per year, and having a spiritual “check-up” at least

once a year with a spiritual director or by attending a retreat.

daily examination of Conscience and act of Contrition

Our day can get the best of us and, at times, make us irritable or

cause us to act out in an unhealthy manner. Beginning the day with

a prayer helps us to manage the day rather than having the day

manage us.

At the end of our day, before sleep, it is important to make an

examination of conscience. Just as we tend to our teeth, a proper

examination of our day is like brushing our soul. Examining our

sins and frustrations in the day helps us to take an account of our

lives. Doing this daily helps us to stay spiritually fresh and alert so

that we can enjoy abiding in God’s love. To avoid soul decay, we

need to examine our conscience daily.

An examination of conscience may simply be a quick review of

our day - how we interacted with family, our co-workers, how

we worked, played, spent free time, prayed, etc. After a proper

examination, an Act of Contrition - such as the prayer in the right

column - is appropriate. Contrition is our way of challenging

ourselves to be better the next day.

sacrament of reconciliation

A recovering addict will be the first to tell us that simply praying

to God in heaven is not enough. Admitting it to another is the

second step. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is both a confession

to God and to God’s Church. When we make our confession in the

Church, the Body of Christ, we are confessing to Christ Himself.

Confessing our sins before a priest who represents Christ and His

Church helps us to get a read on on our spiritual lives and also to be

absolved of our sins. Like going for a deep cleaning, when brushing

isn’t enough, we ask for absolution and some sort of penance to get

ourselves back on the relational path with Jesus. Doing this at least

three times a year is recommended and necessary if their is some

serious mortal sin in our lives. Like cleaning our teeth, a good soul

cleaning can prevent serious spiritual decay.

Yearly Check Up

At least once a year, an attempt should be made to take in a retreat

or make a visit with a spiritual guide. This allows us to really

examine our spiritual path with the Lord. Thankfully, here at St.

Rose, we have a number of retreats available through Cursillo,

Marriage Encounter, Prayer Groups, and our own Men and Women

weekends at Whispering Winds.

a PraYer to Manage MY daY

O Jesus, through the Immaculate

Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers,

works, joys, and sufferings of this

day for all the intentions of your

Sacred Heart, in union with the holy

sacrifice of the Mass throughout

the world, in thanksgiving for your

favors, in reparation for my sins,

for the intentions of all my relatives

and friends, and in particular for the

intentions of the Holy Father. Amen.

dailY eXaMination

Place yourself in the presence of God,

and say the following:

“Thank you”: Thank the Lord for the

blessings of the day.

“I’m sorry”: Acknowledge your faults

specifically and directly.

“Please help me more”: Ask the Lord

for help for tomorrow. Make specific

resolutions.

Make an act of contrition (see below).

End with an Our Father and a Hail

Mary.

aCt of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for

having offended you, and I detest all

my sins, because I dread the loss of

heaven and the pains of hell; but most

of all because they offend you, my

God, who are all good and deserving

of all my love. I firmly resolve, with

the help of your grace, to confess my

sins, to do penance, and to amend my

life. Amen.

On Friday, December 7, 2012 Father Jacob Bertrand will celebrate the first Friday mass at 6:30 PM. Immediately after his homily he will bless and consecrate the families to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Thirteen families signed up for the event last October during the Legion of Mary's Columban drive. So far, nine families have confirmed attendance. For those families that have not yet confirmed or have further questions, please call Christine at (619) 422-4643. In December 7, the families participating in the group enthronement should be in the church at least 15 minutes before the mass starts so that they can be seated in the front rows reserved for the purpose.

Immaculée Ilibagiza’s life was transformed dramatically during the 1994 Rwandan genocide where she and seven other women spent 91 days hiding silently in a cramped 3x4 foot bathroom of a local pastor’s house. Immaculée entered the bathroom a vibrant, 115-pound university student with a loving family. After 91 days in hiding, she emerged from the bathroom weighing just 65 pounds and

finding her family had been brutally murdered. Immaculée Ilibagiza will share her story of survival, as well as her journey of finding God and forgiveness for her family’s killers. Immaculée’s first book, Left to Tell is a New York Times Best Seller, and has been featured on 60 Minutes, The CBS Early Show, CNN and USA Today. To date, Left to Tell has

been translated into over 20 languages worldwide, and is under contract to become a major motion picture.

bendiga.

The Altar & Rosary Society Guilds clean the altar, the sacristy and

replen-ish the holy water twice a week. We enjoy providing fresh flowers to

beau-tify and honor God’s house. If you wish to help with the flowers on Friday

mornings, please leave you name and phone number at the parish office. In

the past couple of years we have taken on other responsibilities to help the

parish. We now buy the altar breads every two months, the wine every two

or three months, and the candles as needed. Those of you who use the

Al-tar & Rosary envelope from your monthly envelope package are the friends

who make this possible. The Altar & Rosary Society by-laws state, that any

and all monies we receive from the envelopes must be used exclusively for

the care and needs of the altar at St. Rose of Lima Church. We want you

to know how much we appreciate your help which allows us to continue

with our ministry. Thank you and God bless you.
