From the Pastor:

My Friends in the Lord Jesus,

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday! The forty-day preparation for Easter, and the Easter Season, is fast approaching.

Services on Ash Wednesday, with the distribution of ashes during each service, will be Mass at 8:30 AM, Mass at 10:00 AM with St. Bernadette School, and Mass at 7:00 PM. The Sacrament of Confession will be available weekly on Saturday afternoon at 4:15 PM and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM.

Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Friday evenings at 7:00 PM. Soup and bread prior to the Stations of the Cross will available as part of a Lenten fast, dates will be announced.

The season of Lent is a season which focuses our attention acutely on the transforming grace of the Lord in our lives. The first three weeks of the season of Lent are meant to help us to experience compunction. This word, compunction is related to the word “puncture.” Lent is a season which helps us to “puncture” our inflated egos and our self - centered living. The last few weeks of Lent draw attention to the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. During Lent we profess our need for redemption.

St. Teresa of Avila wrote: “If Christ Jesus dwells in a man (person) as his friend and noble leader, that man (person) can endure all things, for Christ helps and strengthens us and never abandons us. He is a true friend. And I clearly see that if we expect to please him and receive an abundance of his graces, God desires that these graces come to us from the hands of Christ, through his most sacred humanity, in which God takes delight. All blessings come through our Lord. He will teach us, for in beholding his life we find that he is the best example. What more do we desire from such a good friend at our side?...Whenever we think of Christ we should recall the love that led him to bestow on us so many graces and favors, and also the great love of God showed in giving us in Christ a pledge of his love; for love calls for love in return.”

The Lenten season calls us to holiness. Holiness is expressed by acknowledging one’s need for God and to do good for others. Holiness is the fundamental character of God. As we experience the mercy and love, forgiveness and compassion of God, we confront any illusions we might have about ourselves, recalling the words of Ash Wednesday, “Remember that you are dust and unto dust shall you return.” And “Repent, and follow the gospel.” Yet it is precisely this that moves the heart of God, as we pray, “have mercy on me, O Lord, a sinner.”

Let us enter the season of Lent with the intention of the renewal of our hearts and minds. As we prepare for Easter, we acknowledge the need for the Lord’s saving grace. We join the whole Church in its acclamation, “We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

8TH SUNDAYIN ORDINARY TIME

“A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.”

(Luke 6:43)

Are you using your God-given gifts in the way God intended? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name.

2019 Partners in Charity Appeal

Partners in Charity….Generate Joy! What an inspiration it is for all of us to know that when we support the Annual Partners in Charity Appeal we generate joy in the lives of those served by our many agencies and ministries. And you, in turn, share in the joy of bringing hope into the lives of those we serve. Text giving is hands down the easiest and most secure way to give. If you know how to send a text message, you can make a gift to Partners in Charity in seconds on your phone. Best yet, our parish, St. Bernadette will receive credit! Text the word: donate to 84576. In addition to giving you can also view the 2019 appeal video. You can also make your gift online at partners-charity.net. Thank you for your continued support!

The In Pew Commitment Weekend for the 2019 Partners in Charity Appeal will be held March 23 & 24. Once a year, we commit ourselves to this ongoing work by supporting this life giving appeal. We reflect on God’s great generosity, and respond with generous giving of our own. With your support, faith in action is visible every day in the compassionate outreach of Catholic Charities, to the least among us; in the prayerful witness of our retired priests and the joy of new priestly vocations; to the many diocesan ministries and programs that heal, teach and care for others. Watch the Appeal Video at home this week at www.partners-charity.net.
