SECTION 271500 - HORIZONTAL UTP CABLING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, to this Section.

B. PART 1 - GENERAL of SECTION 271300 BACKBONE COMMUNICATIONS CABLING shall also apply to this section.

1.2 MANUFACTURER

A. Subject to compliance with specified requirements, provide specified materials equal to the referenced products included for the design of the Local Area Network Cabling system.

1.3 PRODUCT SUBSTITUTION

A. No manufacturer substitutions will be allowed for the structured cabling system.

1.4 UTP COPPER CABLE LENGTHS, TERMINATIONS, MARKINGS A. Copper Cable runs shall be compliant with EIA/TIA recommended lengths:

1. Horizontal cables shall not exceed 295 feet (90 meters). Cable runs shall be continuous with no allowance for splicing.

B. Copper cable Eight-Position Jack Pin/Pair Assignments shall match EIA/TIA T568A cabling standards.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide a certified structured cabling system by one of the following:

1. Uniprise (Ultra Media)

2. Ortronics (Clarity 6) / Berk-Tek (Lanmark 2000) 3. Panduit (TX-6) / General Cable (Genspeed 6500) 4. Leviton (Extreme 6) / Superior Essex NextGain Cat 6eX 5. SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED XL7.

B. Products defined in this section set the standard for the product defined. Manufacturers approved above shall meet the standards defined by these products.

2.2 EQUIPMENT RACK

A. 4-post Server Cabinet: Where indicated, free-standing, 19"W x 84"H X 39” D, self-supporting, constructed of high-strength aluminum, black in color. Open sides, no doors. 5/8” – 5/8” – ½” alternating hole pattern compatible with EIA 1 ¼” – ½” alternating hole patterns. Includes 50 pilot point #12-24 mounting screws. Provide grounding connection to ground bus in room. 1. Provide products manufactured by one of the following:

a. Chatsworth Products (CPI): M1042-70 1) Vertical cable management: 1 set

2) Low Profile Fixed Shelf (black, vented, 2 per cabinet): 12610-719

3) Monitor Shelf and Sliding Keyboard Tray with Mouse Pad (1 per cabinet): 12495-719

4) Flush Mount surge protected Power Strip (1 per cabinet) b. Panduit CMR4P84, SRM19XA8A1, SRM19MPK2

c. Prior Approved Equal

B. Rack: Where indicated, freestanding, 19"W x 84"H, self-supporting, constructed of high-strength aluminum, black in color. 5/8” – 5/8” – ½” alternating hole pattern compatible with EIA 1 ¼” – ½” alternating hole patterns. Includes 50 pilot point #12-24 mounting screws. Anchor to floor and provide connection to electrical ground bus bar.

1. Provide products manufactured by one of the following: a. Chatsworth Products (CPI) #48353-703 series. b. Panduit CMR19X84

c. CommScope RK3-45A d. Prior approved equal.

2. Wire Management: Furnish and install cable management ducts on each side of racks. Vertical ducts shall be 3” or 6” wide, as indicated on drawings, with integrated molded plastic cable guides and a hinged door/cover. Furnish and install horizontal wire management panel for each modular patch panel and network switch. Reference the riser diagrams for quantities. Horizontal duct shall be black plastic with removable top cover. a. Provide products manufactured by one of the following:

1) Vertical Management: Chatsworth Products (CPI) #30095-703 series. 2) Horizontal Management: Chatsworth Products (CPI) #30339-719 and

30330-719 series.

4) CommScope: Vertical: VCM-SS-84-6, Horizontal: HTK-19-SS-1U or HTK-19-SS-2U

5) Prior approved equal.

3. Power Strips: Furnish and install rack mounted surge protected vertical power strip for each rack. Provide necessary stand offs to prevent conflicts with cable management and equipment.

a. Provide products manufactured by one of the following: 1) Chatsworth Products (CPI) #12853-702

2) Prior Approved Equal

C. Wall Mount Cabinet: Where indicated, wall mounted, 24”D x 24"H, self-supporting, constructed of high-strength steel, black in color. 5/8” – 5/8” – ½” alternating hole pattern compatible with EIA 1 ¼” – ½” alternating hole patterns. Includes 50 pilot point #12-24 mounting screws. Anchor to wall and provide connection to electrical ground bus bar.

1. Provide products manufactured by one of the following: a. Chatsworth Products (CPI) #11900-724 series. b. Prior approved equal.

2. Fan Kit: Furnish and install cabinet fan kit with filter for each wall cabinet. a. Chatsworth Products (CPI) #12804-701 & 12805-701 series.

b. Prior approved equal.

3. Power Strip: Furnish and install cabinet surge protected power strip with 20 amp receptacles for each wall cabinet.

a. Chatsworth Products (CPI) #12820-705 series. b. Prior approved equal.

2.3 CABLE SUPPORT

A. Waterfalls: Div. 26 has installed cable tray within the headend / data closets. Provide radius bend waterfalls for transition from horizontal cable tray to rack. Provide with waterfalls to each of the data/video racks.

1. Provide products manufactured by one of the following:

a. Flextray 6”DROP-OUT to match existing installed manufacturer of wire mesh cable tray.

B. Cable Runway: Steel tubing, welded cross members every 12”. Provide runway in each closet, over racks and wall-mounted equipment as shown. Provide with all necessary hardware for a complete and clean installation, including cable runway radius drops, radius bends, splice kits,

corner brackets, wall supports, ceiling supports, and runway elevation kits and grounding connections. Provide radius bend drops (waterfalls) for transition from horizontal runway to rack. Runway shall be elevated 6” above racks.

1. Provide products manufactured by one of the following:

a. Chatsworth Products (CPI) # 10250-712 and #10250-718 series with all appropriate hardware as indicated on the drawings.

b. CommScope # CR-SLR-10L12W and #CR-SLR-10L18W series with all appropriate hardware as indicated on the drawings.

c. Prior approved equal.

C. J-hooks: Steel, UL listed, ultimate static load limit 50 lbs. minimum. Wide base, beveled edges. Rated to support Category 6 cables, and optical fiber cables. Integral Velcro strap. If required, assemble to manufacturer recommended specialty fasteners including beam clips, flange clips, drop wire/rod, C and Z purlin clips.

1. Provide products manufactured by one of the following: a. Chatsworth Products (CPI) # 31422-801 series. b. Panduit J-PRO

c. Caddy by Erico, Inc.

D. Provide plenum rated velcro straps, length and strength as required to properly organize and bundle cables. Vinyl tie straps are prohibited throughout. Do not use vinyl to temporarily organize cables.

E. Existing building structure may be used to support cabling, if the structural members are smooth, free of burs, and have adequate surface area to prevent deforming of cable jacket. Bundle cables with Velcro when utilizing existing structure for support. Coordinate with other trades for locations.

2.4 CATEGORY 6 PERMANENT LINK

A. The Category 6 4 pair UTP channel consists of all cable and components with up to four connections that comprise the full 100-meter circuit from the LAN Electronics to the workstation device. The channel shall support applications such as 10Base-T, 100Base-T, 155 Mbs ATM, 77 channel broadband video, 1.0 Gbps Ethernet, 1.2 Gbps, and proposed 2.4 Gbps ATM technologies.

B. The Category 6 permanent link (4-pair UTP) consists of a maximum of 90 meters of horizontal cable from the telecommunications room and will connect patch panels to the workstation faceplate/ RJ45 jack in the work area. The permanent link/channel shall support applications such as 10Base-T, 100Base-T, 155 Mbs ATM, 77 channel broadband video, 1.0 Gbps Ethernet, 1.2 Gbps, and proposed 2.4 Gbps ATM technologies.

C. The channel shall include the patch cord, patch panels, horizontal cabling, and the station cord, and shall have a positive 10dB PSACR across the full frequency range of 1MHz - 250MHz.

D. All components shall be backward compatible with existing Category 3, 4, 5 and 5e networks. E. The cabling permanent link with specified manufacturers above shall exceed Category 6

requirements.

2.5 INFORMATION OUTLETS

A. Activations: The numbers adjacent to data information outlets as shown on the plans indicate the number of data cables terminated to jacks at each information outlet. If no number, or the number zero is shown, no data cables shall be terminated at that location, but a blank 4-position faceplate shall be provided.

B. Modular Faceplates: Gray, smooth nylon, UL rated 94V-O high impact, flame-retardant, thermoplastic, integral label card and cover, sized as follows:

1. Data or telephone information outlets: Devices shown on plans, as data information outlets shall be four position faceplates. Four position faceplates shall be Uniprise UNF-MFM-4P(6P)-L-ST, or equal. The number next to each outlet indicates the number of data activations at that location (ie. “1" indicates one data cable installed, with blank inserts over the three remaining faceplate positions).

2. Wall mounted telephone outlets: Stainless steel faceplate suitable for wall mounted telephone. Provide CAT 6 cable at each location unless noted otherwise. Coordinate final phone faceplate with telephone manufacturer. Provide plate to mate with phone. C. Modular jacks: Modular jack designed for high-performance networking applications. Uniprise

UNJ600-OR .

1. Workstation outlet color: Orange.

2. Backbone voice cabling patch panel outlet color: White. D. Minimum electrical requirements:

1. Insulation resistance: 500 MΩ minimum

2. Dielectric withstand voltage 1,000 VAC RMS, 60 Hz, minimum contact-to-contact and 1,500 VAC RMS, 60 Hz minimum from any contact to exposed conductive surface. 3. Contact resistance: 20 MΩ maximum

4. Current rating: 1.5A at 68 degrees F per IEC Publication 512-3, Test 5b

E. Dust Cover/Blank: Contractor shall provide dust covers for each outlet as required to close all faceplate openings. UNDC-GY

2.6 MODULAR PATCH PANELS

A. Furnish and install Modular Patch Panels, Uniprise Distribution Hardware or equal. The patch panels shall be for 19’ wide rack mounting with extended strain relief bar in the rear of the patch panel. The panels shall have jacks wired to 110 IDC terminals via a printed wiring board on the rear of the distribution modules. The front distribution modules shall be equipped with 8-pin/8-conductor outlets providing continuous interconnection to the 110 IDC terminals.

Provide labeling strip above each jack. Contractor shall be responsible for sizing the modular patch panels according to the following specifications:

1. Number of Modular Patch Panel Ports shall be 120 percent of the total number of terminated information outlets at each closet.

2.7 PATCH CORDS

A. Provide Patch Cords, Uniprise UNC6 series, 24 AWG, polyfin, twisted, jacketed, with 8-position Modular Plug at each end.

1. Colors:

a. Data color: Blue b. Data color: White

B. Lengths of patch cords in data closets shall comply with EIA/TIA 568A recommended lengths: Data Closet and Head End patch cords shall not exceed 7 meters (20 feet). Provide varying lengths to suit data closet installation. Coordinate final length selection with owner prior to ordering. Submit documentation of this coordination effort to the owner for approval. Provide copy of this document to the architect/engineer.

1. Data and voice lengths: Assume 25% 3 ft., 60% 5 ft., 10% 10 ft, 5% 15’ of each color. C. Number of Patch Cords shall be 115 percent of the total number of terminated jacks/ports. Turn

over the 15 percent spares to the owner.

2.8 STATION CORD

A. Provide UTP Station Cord interconnection between the work location equipment and the data outlet. Cord shall be 24 AWG tinned copper stranded conductors insulated with solid polyfin, tightly twisted into individual pairs and jacketed with flame retardant PVC. An 8-position modular plug will be terminated to each end of the cords. These cords will match the installed Patch Cords in order to maintain the integrity of the CAT 6 Local Area Network UTP cabling system. Provide Uniprise UNC6 series workstation cord.

1. Data color: Blue. 2. Voice color: White

B. Provide UTP Station Cords of the following lengths: 50% 10 feet, 50% 15 feet. Coordinate final length selection with owner. Submit documentation of this coordination effort to the owner for approval. Provide copy of this document to the architect/engineer.

1. Station cord lengths for wall-mounted phones shall not meet this requirement. Provide minimum suitable length of phone cord for connection to phone.

2.9 HORIZONTAL UTP CABLE

A. Furnish and install copper Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) horizontal cable as follows:

1. Uniprise UltraMedia 7504 or equal, plenum rated, 24 AWG bare solid copper conductor. The cable shall conform to UL Type CMP listing for plenum and riser applications. 2. Each cable sheath shall contain 4 pairs of unshielded copper twisted-pairs with each pair

having a different twist ratio of 12 to 24 twists per foot and cable shall have a pair isolator.

3. The cables shall exceed the requirements of:

a. EIA/TIA 568A Commercial Building Wiring Standard Horizontal Cable Section for category 6.

b. Plenum - UL 910, CMP.

4. The cables shall meet the following representative electrical and transmission characteristics:

a. Mutual Capacitance - nom. = 14 nF/1000 ft.

b. DC Resistance - max. = 29 ohms/1000 ft. (9.4 ohms/100m). c. a. Horizontal cable jacket shall be blue in color.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

A. Install equipment and components in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions, in compliance with NEC, and with recognized industry practices. Ensure that all work complies with specifications and serves the intent of the construction documents. Cabling and equipment shall be installed in accordance with good engineering practices as established by the EIA/TIA and the NEC.

3.2 INSTALLATION A. UTP Cabling - General:

1. Provide intra-building cabling runs between MDF/TC rooms. Provide dedicated horizontal cable runs from TC rooms to all "terminated" data information and phone outlets as described above and indicated on the Drawings.

2. Provide Faceplates for all data, voice, TV, CV, lcd, camera and card reader information outlets.

3. Where outlets are shown on plans, this contractor shall provide jack termination, faceplate, and cabling.

4. Provide Modular Information Outlets in Outlet Boxes for all "terminated" data information outlets.

5. Excess cable behind faceplate connections shall be pulled back into ceiling spaces and secured in such a manner as to prevent damage to cabling or connections.

6. A minimum 15-foot loop of extra horizontal cable shall be secured in the accessible ceiling space with a Velcro tie strap.

7. A minimum 15-foot loop of extra horizontal cable shall be secured above the data rack. 8. Tighten connectors and terminals, including screws and bolts, in accordance with

equipment manufacturer's published torque tightening values for equipment connectors. 9. Avoid excessive and sharp bends that may damage cabling. Do not exceed

manufacturer's recommended pulling tensions for backbone and horizontal cables.

10. Allow sufficient slack (15 feet) in cable to prevent premature deterioration of cable system components and to assist in the maintenance and servicing of cable and/or other building systems and components.

11. Provide Cable Distribution J-Hooks as necessary to route and support cables. All cables shall be supported from the building structure and shall not lie on ceiling grid. J-hooks shall be spaced no more than five feet on center.

12. Provide Velcro straps to bundle and organize cabling for a quality and professional installation. Vinyl cable straps are prohibited.

13. Fittings or connections are allowed only at the input and output of devices. Splicing shall not be accepted in cable runs. Spliced cable runs shall be rejected and replaced with continuous cables, prior to acceptance.

14. Separation of Wires: Comply with EIA/TIA-569 rules for separation of UTP cables from potential EMI sources.

15. Cable and wiring routed through inaccessible spaces or spaces where there is a risk of damage to conductors shall be installed in conduit, conduit provided by this contractor B. Conduit Sleeves: Where additional conduit sleeves are required for cable routing (beyond those

shown on the drawings), provide conduit sleeve rough-in and fire stopping through fire-rated and block walls for all "terminated" and "future" information outlets. Sizing of conduit sleeves shall be based on NEC 40% fill capacity and industry standard recommendations. Sizing of conduit sleeves shall take into account all horizontal cable routing. Provide insulated bushings on all conduit sleeves to protect cabling from damage.

C. Conduit Pathways: Where conduit is required for cable routing, provide EMT rough in as required or shown on the drawings. Where installed in finished locations as shown on the drawings, paint the conduit to match the adjacent surfaces. Sizing of conduit shall be as indicated or if not indicated then based on NEC 40% fill capacity and industry standard recommendations.

D. Fire Stopping: Provide fire stopping for all conduit sleeves shown on the plans and as added as required at all fire rated walls. Firewalls are indicated on the architectural drawings and are available for review at the General Contractor’s / Construction Manager’s office. Fire stopping shall be required at all fire rated walls for all sleeves, including those provided by the Division 26 contractor that are shown ½ tone on the technology drawings.

E. Grounding: Ground all racks and cable runway to the grounding bus located adjacent to the rack. The ground bus is provided by the Division 26 contractor. This contractor shall provide #6 CU conductor from each rack / runway to the ground bus. Ground equipment per manufacturers' instructions and NEC requirements.

F. Training: Provide on-site, hands-on training for a minimum of two (2) individuals on cabling-related equipment specified herein. A minimum of two (2) hours of training shall be provided for UTP and Fiber Cabling. Tasks necessary to perform on-going management of the cabling system shall be addressed as part of the training. The following topics shall be included as part of the training for the Cabling System:

1. Labeling Conventions 2. Moves, Adds & Changes

3. Reading and updating Record Drawings

4. Proper cable management in accordance with EIA/TIA 568A. G. Labeling, in accordance with TIA/EIA-606:

1. Confirm room numbers with Owner's Representative prior to labeling. The room numbers shown on the plans may not be the final room numbers.

2. Use the following format for Data Outlet and Patch Panel labeling: Closet-Room-Jack ID. The Jack ID shall be A, B, C, or D for each jack. For example, the first jack of

Outlet #1 in Room 114 served from data closet A1 shall be labeled as A1-114-1A. Coordinate with owner. Obtain Owner approval in writing.

3. Utilize manufacturer designed labeling method at Patch Panels. Labeling method shall be permanent and minimally susceptible to vandalism. Labels shall be permanent, and contractor shall replace fallen labels as part of the warranty.

4. Provide custom engraved stainless steel faceplates for labeling at outlet locations. 5. Label patch panel terminations with the identical numbers used at the outlets.

6. Label both ends of each cabling run within 6 inches of termination points with Panduit Pan-Ty, or equal.

7. Final labeling shall include: face of patch panel, cable end behind patch panel, cable end within data j-box, and data faceplate.

8. Labeling shall be in accordance with owner requirements.

3.3 COPPER CABLE TESTING

A. Notify and schedule with Engineer the final testing.

B. Testing of all copper wiring shall be performed prior to system cutover.

C. Cables shall be tested for all Category 6 100% link parameters using the specified level 3 tester. Test all Category 6 link parameters, including attenuation, NEXT, PS NEXT, FEXT, ELFEXT, return loss, and delay skew.

D. Patch cord, workstation cord, and cable lengths shall be recorded as part of the testing. E. Faults shall be corrected and retested.

F. Test information along with manufacturer and model number of test equipment shall be recorded and provided to Owner as part of the project Telecommunications Manual.

G. Provide proof of factory calibration of test meter within 6 months of the beginning of testing. H. The “* pass” option on the test meter must be set to the “on” state. The “* pass” symbol

indicates a channel that is within 1 db of failing.

I. Provide test data in electronic format with corresponding software for viewing of testing documentation on ROM provided from the test meter. Contractor shall provided one CD-ROM to Owner and one to Engineer.

3.4 COORDINATION MEETING

A. Provide (2) 2-hour coordination meetings with the owner prior to installation and ordering of any materials to determine final owner requirements. Items requiring further coordination include, but are not limited to:

1. Final rack layouts and elevations.

2. Copper and fiber patch cord lengths and colors. 3. Labeling.
