Orientation Briefing #7 Attendance Policies

As for attendance, the school rule is that students must attend 2/3 of your classes, or if he or she misses 5 classes, then he is dropped. If any student misses three classes consecutively, please tell our secretary Mihara-san so that the student’s advisor can contact him. A few years ago, KIT has installed ID readers for attendance, from which you can use for attendance, but it is recommended that you take attendance yourself as students might give their IDs to their friends and not attend class. Thus, always check the number of students with those who have signed the attendance list or who said that they were attending. You must take attendance for every class. If any students have missed a class, it is recommended that you confirm this by either calling out their name or writing their name on the blackboard as they often will insist that they were

present. You will ALWAYS have some students telling you that they HAD attended a particular class, so

you must be very sure about who was in attendance on any given day.

Orientation Briefing #8 First Day of Sogo Eigo A Class (April 13

th

)

For the first day of class do not be surprised that some, if not half of your students have not gotten around to buying the textbook. Thus, have some copies ready (you can do this before class, at the printer, but it might be somewhat troublesome as other teachers might be copying too). Also, for new teachers, please bring your bank book as the University needs to know this information in order to pay you. If you are driving, please bring all information pertaining to your car, (plate number, kind of car, etc.). Bring your personal honko / seal. You will need to introduce yourself at the main gate to the guard, who will give you a pass to put on your dashboard, and you can park to the left in front of the new administration building, if there are spaces. April

Orientation Briefing #9 Teacher Portfolios

The English section has implemented a google site https://sites.google.com/site/kitenglisha/ from which you can add your own classroom homework assignments (recommended) for students that might have missed a class, and for any supplementary files (interesting activities and resources) that can help make your class interesting. Each teacher has his/her folder in this site.

Orientation Briefing #10 Grading Policies

Ungraded 5 " (failed or incomplete - they do not appear on the graph) This is how JABEE expects us to grade in future.

April -May

For the first five weeks you have a choice of introducing your OWN writing / editing tasks, or using any of the Criterion Writing Tasks. You can select from tasks in the Grammar, Mechanics, Style / Syntax, Self-Editing Folders. Have your students download them, print out and finish as homework. Also in the site, you have a variety of Criterion Writing tasks. Decide on which ones you want your students to do, and have them download them for homework. These writing tasks have replaced a paper, so for the first few weeks, students can become better acquainted with writing and mechanics, and editing. Do put this on your syllabus though and let the Sogo Eigo A coordinator which tasks your students are doing. Check and discuss answers. May

June 15th

First Criterion assignment (descriptive paper of Self-Introduction, 300 words) will soon begin, clue teachers to extra syntax and grammar tasks on site for extra homework. One option is to have students write out (either in the previous week or in class) a self-introduction paper. Have rows exchange papers (two or three

times) and have students edit these papers giving at least three comments (negative / positive). Return papers

to students. Have students then improve their papers and upload to Criterion. Pass out Criterion Feedback

Forms and show how students can use the Criterion Feedback, list their most serious errors, and think about their goals for their next paper. Teachers, select and tell the first group of students in each of your classes to prepare for presentations for the following week.

June 15th

First Criterion assignment ends. Assignment ends June 15th. Evaluate by June 25th giving evaluation on

content and other information that you feel important. Teachers, select and tell the next group of students in each of your classes to prepare for presentations on self-introductions for the following week. Second Criterion assignment, (descriptive) on students’ hometown, begins, from 350 words. Have students write a draft of their second paper, on their hometown for editing for the next week.

S grade (90 and over) 5 students A grade (80 to 89) 7 "

B grade (70 to 79) 9 " C grade (60 to 69) 4 " Ungraded ? .
