ACTIVITY 2

o You will need:

Strips of cartolina Red crayon

o Dot these:

1. Make a cut the upper center of cartolina. Use a cutter. 2. Draw 13 small lines with equal

distances below the right corner of the cut.

3. Copy the numbers as shown. 4. Cut a smaller strip of cartolina

with a circular shape bottom which would fit the cut of the first cartolina as shown in the illustration.

5. Cut is so that its tip will reach the bottom of the 1st

Sometimes the air is hot. At other times it is cold.

The degree of hotness or coldness of air is called the air temperature. An air temperature is used to measure air temperature.

Now you’ll learn how to measure air temperature. You will first be suing an air thermometer model.

WHAT IS TEMPERATURE?

You observed that sometimes the air gets warm and at other times, it gets cold. The degree of hotness and coldness of air is called temperature.

Temperature Changes During The Day

An area gets hotter when it is heated by the sun and gets cool when the heat leaves the area. The coldest time of the 24-hour day is just before sunrise, after the Earth has been losing heat all night.

Air temperature is measured by a device called air thermometer. It is expressed in degree Celsius or . A thermometer is a narrow glass tube containing mercury or colored alcohol. As the temperature increases, the mercury or alcohol expands and its level in the tube rises. The number corresponding to the liquid’s level is the temperature reading.

Do the following activities:

ACTIVITY 1

o Choose a shady place.

o Look for a place where you can hang your thermometer.

o Take thermometer readings every ten minutes.

o Record your readings in a table in your notebook.

o Make a graph of your temperature readings.

Time Temperature I learned that:

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of air. Temperature is measured by an air thermometer.

When measuring air temperature, take note of the height of the liquid inside the air thermometer.

ACTIVITY 2

Choose a sunny place.

Construct a structure so that you can hang your thermometer. Take readings every ten minutes.

Record your readings in a table in your notebook. Make a graph of your temperature readings.

ACTIVITY 3

Your family is planning to go on a picnic. What is the best time you will suggest to them? Explain.

A. Get a thermometer. Measure the air temperature in the following.

o closed cabinet

o under the tree

o inside the refrigerator

o open area under the sun

Record the different air temperature readings in your notebook.

B. Draw a bar graph of the following air temperature readings recorded for the day.
